Balanced on each horse is a rider,
standing fully upright with his feet astride.
Each man is decked out in a variation of
the same outfit – an embroidered collarless
shirt, colourful billowing trousers, a fur-
trimmed hat – so they look like some kind
of equestrian boy band, which is fitting: the
responses of the audience – whoops and
cheers and thunderous applause – is what
you’d expect at a One Direction concert.
This is the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks
horse theatre on Khortytsia, one of
Zaporizhzhya’s islands and the largest in
the Dnipro river. Today, the island is a nature
reserve, but it’s best known for having
22 WIZZ MAGAZINE
been the home base of the Zaporozhian
Cossacks, a military community that fought
for the independence of Ukrainian lands
between the 16th and 18th centuries.
Stunt riding was an important skill for
the Cossacks. They originally used it as a
training exercise to increase their warriors’
balance and agility on horseback during
battle, but they also competed in horse
shows, constantly creating swish new moves
to show off their skills. Although Cossack
culture faded over the centuries, stunt riding
has endured, thanks in large part to this
theatre, which is among the most important
and popular venues dedicated to these
ferocious and beautiful demonstrations.
With Ukraine’s culture proving more
important than ever to its citizens, there’s
been a renewed interest in Cossack history
and traditions, such as embroidery and
flower crowns. I’ve come to see whether the
theatre’s hair-raising tricks are enough to
earn these horse-riding acrobats the status
of cultural standard bearers.
It’s all very impressive, but as the show
wears on I’m left wondering what else the
riders can do once they’ve stood upright on
a steed. Suddenly, the excited chatter dies
away as a performer dressed as the Otaman
– the head honcho among the Cossacks –
steps forward. “Who here thinks this rider will
be able to pick up this hat from the ground
mid-ride?” he shouts, brandishing a fur
headpiece. I look for the rider he’s referring
to, expecting to see a grizzled muscle-man
gritting his teeth and clenching his fists.

some free time, so I started perfecting my
horse riding and then spent almost a year
learning the stunts.”
Like most of the riders here, Arkysht has
been mentored by Yurii Kolesnikov, a rider
and instructor in his early forties, who in
turn had an elder to show him the ropes
when he first started out in the business.
“I learned all the stunts from the theatre’s
original owner, who mastered the art of
trick riding in a circus,” Kolesnikov says.

ach year, tourists pour
into Madrid in search
of Spanish culture:
paella, rioja and, of
course, flamenco –
the country’s traditional musical
form. Flamenco songs, delivered
in a distinctly emotional, forceful
voice, tend to tell stories of love
and loss, accompanied by guitars
and expressive, sometimes furious
dance moves. It is a beautiful form,
and there is nothing mild about it.
Nobody knows this better
than Joana Burgos, lead singer
of popular local band Juana
Chicharro, who’s from Vallecas,
a hard-knock neighbourhood on
the southern edge of Madrid. She

eon lights glow purple,

glass flasks filled with different
coloured liquids. A brightly lit
metal counter is arrayed with
bottles and test tubes. Behind it on one
side are stainless steel drums; on the other,
oak barrels. Marina Milić is using a pipette
to carefully decant and measure out liquids
into tasting glasses, ready for me to try. It
looks like a cross between a laboratory and
a cool downtown bar and, in many senses,
that’s exactly what Belgrade Urban Distillery
(BUD) is: a meticulous small-batch rakija
distilling operation open to the public for
tastings and cocktails. Yet to most Serbians,
hipster BUD couldn’t be further removed
from how they imagine a rakija distillery to
look. And that’s exactly the point.
A twice-distilled spirit made from fruit,
that packs a punch at around 40% ABV,

rakija is the drink of Serbia. And when I say
the drink, I mean The Drink.
“You drink rakija when someone dies,”
Milić, BUD’s distiller and technologist,
explains. “When someone is buried we pour
rakija on the ground for their soul. And you
drink it when someone is born. It’s good
for your health too: when you have a high
temperature, you take rakija. We even have
the phrase ‘drunk like a mother’ in Serbian
because, instead of anaesthetic, women
in labour were once given half a bottle to
numb the pain. People drink it every day,
at all hours and at every time of year. It’s
always a good time to drink rakija.”
I’m certainly having a good time as I
make strong headway into tasting each of
the distillery’s 22 varieties of the stuff. It’s
not just for fun though – I’m here to create
my own personalised blend to be stored in
BUD’s own ‘bank’.

Traditionally, rakija is a spirit made from
fermented and distilled plum juice (Serbia
is the third-largest plum producer in the
world, with 42 million trees) by Serbia’s old
folks in the countryside. Because of this
association, younger Serbs were ignoring
it and favouring spirits like vodka instead.
But Branko Nešić, BUD’s founder, grew up
drinking rakija in the city’s kafanas – old-
school bistro-slash-pubs where old men
trade stories and listen to live music. He
knew that although some kinds of the
spirit could blow your brains out and give
you a killer hangover, there’s also good
quality, artisanal rakija to be found, and
the country’s younger generations were
missing out. As Milić is at pains to explain.
“Vodka can be made with grain or any kind
of potato, but we only use good quality fruit
– the kind you’d be happy to feed to a baby.
It’s of a much higher quality.”
Since people usually made rakija in their
grandfather’s village, Nešić decided to do
the same. It just so happened he and his
grandfather are both from Belgrade’s city
centre neighbourhood of Dorćol. Nešić
started serving his spirit in a dedicated rakija
bar, and now makes it in the heart of the
capital city in Serbia’s first urban distillery.

me to taste. As well as classic plum rakija
(šljivovica) – there’s quince, apricot, apple
and pear, as well as barrel-aged versions,
editions infused with honey and herbs, and
rakijas that have had more fruit added to
make them into liqueurs.
Milić lines up a new-make (the stuff that
comes straight from the still) quince spirit
which, at 60%, is eye-wateringly punchy; a
standard quince rakija, which is clear; and
then a premium quince rakija, turned gold
from time spent aging in a barrel. Each
has its own qualities, and the three can be
blended in different ratios to make a drink
to your own personal taste.
Once I’ve settled on my blend
(I experiment with an apricot and a plum
version), Milić mixes it up at scale and
advises on the size of barrel and length
of time needed for aging to get the best
flavour. Unlike whisky, rakija shouldn’t
mature for too long; šljivovica can stay the
longest in barrel, for up to three years.
“Once it’s in the barrel, you make and

Now even those without a country-based
ancestor can honour this ancient tradition
with their own bottling. But perhaps the
proof of BUD’s success is in the opinion of a
previous generation of rakija experts. “When
I started working here, my dad told me that
he’d been making rakija for 20 years and
that I couldn’t teach him anything he didn’t
know,” Milić laughs. “After all, people make
it the way their father and their grandfather
and their great-grandfather before them did,
and they’re certain it’s the best. But now my

father knows how good our rakija is, he’s
even started asking my advice!”
Regardless of how 21st century the
distillery looks, or how scientific the process,
whatever the blend you make, or what you
name it, for Serbs, it seems there can be no
higher praise than a parental thumbs-up – a
rakija barrel’s ultimate seal of approval.

in favour of the country’s shinier
hotspots – Tuscany and Veneto to
the north, Calabria and Sicily to
the south. More and more, though,
visitors are discovering the appeal
of this region, running about 400
kilometres down the heel of Italy.
On WIZZ’s whirlwind tour of the
area, I swerved the sun, sea and
sightseeing of some of its better-
known destinations – Bari, Lecce,
Polignano – in favour of a more
active, immersive experience. The
results weren’t always pretty, but
they were never dull.

The good, the bad and the wobbly
A few hours into my tour of Puglia, and I’m
already in trouble. I’m clinging to the side
of a horse, trying to get my leg over, which
is a lot harder than it looks in cowboy films.
The horse, growing impatient, taps its hoof.
“It’s moving!” I cry to the instructor, who is
heaving my right calf upwards. “Quick!”
We’re at Parco di Mare, an equestrian
centre overlooking the Adriatic Sea near the
village of Montalbano, about 70km south
of Bari. Watching my efforts are Quirino
Santoro, the gruff but reassuringly able
horseman who owns the centre, and my
travel companion Alberto Bernasconi,
who is doing double duty as photographer
and interpreter. “Bravo,” Alberto says,
as I finally flump myself into the saddle.
This is only my second time riding a horse,
so I’m a bit nervous. “Is he friendly?” I ask
the instructor, and she tells me that he is.
“What’s his name?” She smiles and glances
at Quirino: “Tornado.”

Shortly after setting out, Tornado and
I run into difficulties. We are midway down
a steep slope when he stumbles on a rock,
not far from the lip of a gully. Lean back. Lift
the reins. Don’t die. So much to remember!
We avoid the drop and soon we’re
cantering along a broad beach, the happy
horses kicking up sand and sea. Quirino
encourages me to giddy-up and I do, anxiety
giving way to exhilaration. Later, trekking
back across a field dotted with olive trees,
I relax my iron grip on the reins and squint
in a Clint Eastwood-y way, enjoying the
splendid scenery and wondering how the
heck I’m going to get off this thing.
I ask the horse’s
name and the
instructor smiles:

A few wobbles more
I have a very different riding experience in
store as I meet up with Salvatore Galizia,
owner of Road Runner Scooter Rent in
Ostuni. He shows me my ride – a classic
powder-blue Vespa – and leads me on a
glorious tour of the local country roads.
At one point, Salvatore pulls over, picks
a fig off a tree and hands it to me. “Will the
farmer mind?” I ask. “If you put it in your
mouth, it’s OK,” he says. “If you put it in your
bag, it’s stolen.” Nearby, a bird perches on a
drystone wall and whistles a little song. As if
we needed any more ambience.
My third and final ride of the day starts in
someone’s front yard. I’m here with Daniele

Pomes, owner of MadEra Bike Tour, who has
brought me to the Dolmen of Montalbano,
a megalithic burial chamber that, until
recently, served as a very old garden shed.
“The owner doesn’t mind people coming to
look,” Daniele says, gesturing at a nearby
house, “but don’t touch his olives.”
The structure, standing 1.7m high and
dating back about 4,000 years, consists of
three limestone slabs, stacked like the rocks
at Stonehenge. “In Puglia, everything is
linked to this rock,” says Daniele. I sit inside
and ponder the unfathomable history of the
place, until he slaps a supporting slab, which
causes me to ponder the possibility of a
megalith landing on my head.
 From here, we head off to a stretch of
the Via Traiana, the ancient road that once
ran over 500km up to Rome. “This was a
route for donkeys carrying olive oil and
wine,” Daniele says as we cycle past fragrant
meadows and age-old farms. A blustery
tramontana wind is kicking up, and the sea
is stuccoed with whitecaps. We turn and
ride our bikes back towards town, the olive
trees whispering as we pass.
Trulli, madly, deeply
From Montalbano, it’s a half-hour drive
to Alberobello, a weird little town whose
defining feature is its sprawl of squat,
conical houses known as trulli. There are

the feeling that you’ve wandered into
a Brothers Grimm tale.
In 1996, UNESCO granted the trulli World
Heritage status, which led to a spike in
tourism. Accordingly, many locals converted
their trulli into holiday cottages – one of
which we’ve bagged for the night, courtesy
of the Trullidea resort, whose owner, Dino,
can trace his local ancestry back 400 years.
We drop our luggage and head to Paco
Wines, a cosy bar with vaulted ceilings and
a selection of wonderful regional plonk.
It’s late by the time we leave, and the
streets are deathly quiet. Some believe

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the
Umbra Forest occupies the heart of
Gargano National Park in northern
Puglia. Characterised by its dense
vegetation, the “Forest of Shadows”
contains ancient beech trees, oak
and maple, along with 65 species of
orchids. Deer, wild cats, foxes and
owls roam the forest, a haven for
endangered species.

there are ghosts in Alberobello, but I am
more concerned with the fact that these
mysterious houses all look very much the
same, meaning we have a 1,500-to-1 chance
of finding ours. Luckily, the occupants of the
trullo next door are believers in overkill, and
we are guided home by the miniature trulli
models dotting their entryway.
The divine cavity
The following day starts with a 20-minute
drive to the Castellana caves, a fantastical
complex of grottoes and hollows beneath
the Murgia hills. We are met by our guide
Pietro, who leads us down a long, drab
stairway, which only heightens the shock
when we enter the first cave.
The space is dome-shaped, like a rough-
hewn cathedral – 60m high and with a hole
in the top, through which a shaft of sunlight
pierces the gloom. All around us are globular,
brown-green stalagmites, their bizarre
shapes calling to mind alien life forms.

From here, we pass between the Pillars
of Hercules and begin a two-hour, 3km
journey into a dark and beautiful dream: an
endless array of red, brown, green and blue
formations that, like clouds, invite you to
see things that aren’t there. In the Cave of
Monuments, Pietro points out an elephant,
a camel, a cluster of cacti. Further in he
shows us an owl, a jellyfish and “a nice
Italian ice cream cone”. I see mostly
monsters, but I don’t say anything.
Finally, we enter the White Cave, an
arrangement of prongs, blobs and pillars
that seem to generate a light of their own.
We stand for a while and stare, the silence
broken by the drip-drip of water. “People
often cry when they see this,” Pietro says.
“For some it is too beautiful.”
Hotel paradiso
Our final stop is a couple of hours south
of the caves: Matino, a sleepy town in the
province of Lecce, near the Mediterranean

coast. While often overlooked by tourists,
Matino is home to the region’s most
interesting hotel. A Locanda Tu Marchese is
owned and operated by three generations
of the Protopapa clan: nonna Tetta, mum
Luisa and dad Daniele, and daughter Greta.
Set in a 16th-century mansion, the hotel
has six guest rooms and several public
spaces where visitors can relax amid a
clutter of bric-a-brac – a loom, a ladder,
a statue of the Virgin Mary, a scythe. The
furnishings are rustic, the floors are tiled and
the overall feel is of an eccentric, slightly
chaotic family home.
Beyond the tiny reception desk is a bar,
and upstairs a rooftop dining area, but most

Italy ever since. Nomadic by nature,
they can be found wandering the

is turned into caciocavallo cheese, a
must-try regional delicacy.
Eat yesterday’s bread
The town of Altamura is famous for
its rustic charm and old bread. Made
from ancient varieties of durum
wheat, Pane di Altamura is known
for its thin dark crust and soft yellow
crumb. The poet Horace called it
the best bread in the world in 37BC.

of the action takes place in the cellar, an
old olive oil mill that has been transformed
into a restaurant. In the far corner is another
stairway, this one leading further down into
a huge conical chamber that was once a
town cistern and now serves as the hotel
pool. Nothing here is ordinary.
The hotel also offers several activities,
including a pasta-making workshop with
nonna Tetta, which I have been invited
to take part in. The old lady begins by
furiously palming, pulling and pinching a
glob of dough before indicating that I follow
suit. The results are mixed: nonna makes
immaculate orecchiette (little ears) while
I produce a rabble of what might be called
naso perforato (punched noses). But Tetta is
a kindly sort, and she circles her thumb and
forefinger in approval.
Another of Greta’s relatives – her cousin
Elisa, who works locally as a nurse – has
volunteered to teach me a livelier tradition:
pizzica, a form of courtship dancing that
predates twerking by hundreds of years.
“This is the first step,” Greta says, handing
me a generous glass of red wine. Daniele
appears bearing a bowl of dough balls.
Then Luisa and Tetta arrive to watch the
proceedings. My partner stands in the
centre of the room, wearing a flouncy dress
and holding a piece of red satin that, I am
told, I must try to obtain.
What follows is an hour or so of frantic
movement, set to a soundtrack of knee-
slapping folk, Elisa twirling around and
waving the red cloth while I strut and hop
in an attempt to win her heart. The family
clap along, apparently unaware that the

thumping of my own heart has started to

drown out the music. Things get even more
fraught as Alberto and I engage in an all-
male version of the dance, pizzica scherma,
in which we perform a choreographed duel.
Finally, just as I am about to ask Elisa if she
wouldn’t mind slipping into nurse mode, she
presents me with the cloth and the session
is, thankfully, done.
After a couple more glasses of wine,
we take our seats at a downstairs table,
surrounded by a crowd of locals, many of
whom have plucked percussion instruments
from the walls and are playing along with
a trio of young folk musicians. I take a
washboard, order a plate of pasta with
donkey-meat sauce and join in. This goes on
all night – Daniele, in his apron, dancing and
singing, the diners hurling call-and-response
musical insults. One guy, when the drums
have all been taken, grabs a cooking pot
and starts banging that. It’s nuts, and the
most fun I’ve had in years.
Later, in the bar, Daniele and I share a few
shots of local liqueur and, with Greta acting
as interpreter, try to have a meaningful
conversation. The topic, as far as I can tell,
is the long-held local penchant for rebellion,
the enduring belief that this part of Italy is
a world unto itself. “We are troublemakers,”
Daniele says, raising his glass. I want to
tell him that the world could use more of
this kind of trouble, but settle instead for
“Salute!” At times like this, you really don’t
need anything more.

gasps theatrically, teetering in her
stilettos. She’s watching a report on
the UK’s vote to leave the European
Union. Gaping in wide-eyed shock under
heavy false lashes and a beehive straight
out of a Pedro Almodóvar movie, she turns
to the several-hundred-strong audience,
smooths down her royal-blue velvet dress,
and launches into a lip-sync to Jennifer
Hudson’s stirring Dreamgirls ballad. “There’s
no way I’m living without you,” she implores.
“I’m staying, and you’re gonna love me.” The
crowd leaps to a standing ovation.
This is drag queen Choriza’s winning
performance at Liverpool’s first Big Drag
Pageant – a contest for “kings, queens, and
everyone in-between” that arrived in the
city last November. It’s the latest event to
spotlight an art form that has long thrived
in the port city that gave the world beloved
British comedy drag queen Lily Savage, as
well as the late gender-twisting Dead or
Alive singer Pete Burns. A diverse range of
performers and outfits is on show at the
pageant: beards and hairy legs are paired
with pleather miniskirts and frumpy leotards
in a boisterous, lightly political mishmash that
feels distinctly northern English.
Liverpool was recently put firmly back on
the drag map thanks to local prodigy The
Vivienne, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK

last November. It was the first British edition
of the 11-season award-winning American
show; the BBC version was less polished,
peppered with crude slang and rough-and-
ready Margaret Thatcher impressions.
The Vivienne’s raucous personality is
typical of the down-to-earth comedy queens
that Liverpool’s many cabaret clubs, such
as The Lisbon Bar, Kitty’s Showbar and
Superstar Boudoir, are known for. They fit
into a wider scene in a city that claims to
have an LGBTQ+ population equivalent to
San Francisco’s, with a roster of gay clubs
in its Stanley Street Quarter to match. You’ll
catch resident queens most nights at the
likes of Heaven, OMG and GBar, all nightclubs
a couple of minutes’ walk from each other.
But just a few decades ago, Liverpool’s
drag clubs were hidden from plain sight,
despite the city’s busy port bringing in plenty
of punters. “In the 1960s and 70s, seafarers
arriving in Liverpool would use polari [a type
of secret slang] as a language to get by
without straight people knowing what they
were talking about,” says Kitty Litter, the
drag queen owner of the rainbow-painted
Kitty’s Showbar. “When I started performing
in the 1980s, queens looked more like your
auntie or your mother than a superstar.
Even now my whole costume can go in a
carrier bag and no one would be any the
wiser.” With tattooed hairy legs poking out

scrawled-on eyebrows, Kitty represents the
northern-English antithesis of the preened,
perfect-looking American queen pedalled by
US icon RuPaul.
According to Kitty, drag performance took
a nosedive between the 1980s and today, as
tastes shifted. “Years ago, everyone wanted
to be Lily Savage,” she says. “But then
suddenly we had [British TV stars] Graham
Norton and Alan Carr – camp comics that
didn’t have to be in a frock.” Today, however,
there’s a renewed appetite for outrageous,
gender-shifting personas like Kitty, who
performs at least three nights a week.
Social media has also had a hand in
reviving drag in Liverpool. “If you perform
in a bar, 50 people might see you, but post
a video on Instagram and thousands see it
all over the world,” says Choriza May. “It’s
become such a window into drag. And then
Drag Race has obviously helped a lot too.”
Even though The Vivienne was only
recently crowned Drag Race UK champion,
Choriza, who performs regularly in
Newcastle and Liverpool, can already see

an impact on the local scene. “It’s making
everyone step up their game,” she says.
“People who’ve been doing drag for years
are now thinking that this is a job that can
make them famous.”
Kitty and Choriza worry, however, that
the groomed, photo-ready version of drag
promoted by RuPaul risks pigeonholing
performers, even as it makes the scene
more accessible. Certain local promoters are
setting out to address that. “Drag Race has
done a lot for drag as a venture, but it does
suggest that queens have to sit within this
very defined box,” claims Pretentious Dross,
a performer and producer at queer cabaret
night EAT ME + Preach, in Liverpool’s Baltic
Triangle area. “They’re predominantly white
male. But there are so many people outside
of the gender boxes – and the tradition
comes from there, so let’s celebrate it.”
Dross draws from her theatre practice
doctorate studies to blend drag with
experimental live art, often mixing 1980s
horror movie tropes with elements of New
Romantic fashion. “When you go back

to find out why, and discovers how esports has

tense hush descends upon the
crowd. My fellow spectators
and I edge forward anxiously
in our seats, scenting
imminent glory on the air. In
the arena before us, our heroes’ faces are
strained with pure focus; they’re locked in
gladiatorial combat as this grand final nears
its nail-biting climax. An enthusiastic fan
stands up and begins chanting for his team.
This one is going down to the wire.
But it’s not a gang of product-endorsing
names chasing a ball we’re cheering for, or
a couple of muscle mountains jabbing
at each other’s bloodied faces. All this
commotion is for a video game.
Superficially, we’re here to watch intense
young people tapping away on game
controllers. But don’t be fooled – this is a
far bigger deal than popping round your
mate’s gaff to watch her play The Sims.
Online competitive video gaming, or esports
(electronic sports), is an increasingly
mainstream section of the sporting world.
It’s reckoned the global esports market was
worth around a billion euros in 2019 and
competitions are covered by traditional

sporting media outlets such as ESPN. Big
finals can attract larger viewing figures than
the SuperBowl (around 100 million), and
star players can earn north of a million euros
a year in prize winnings.
But they work hard for the money. Pro
gamers practise for around 10 hours a day.
Full-time coaches, and even nutritionists, are
routinely on the payroll of the bigger teams.
They rigorously monitor gamers’ cortisol
levels (a reliable medical indicator of stress),
control sleep schedules and issue dietary
edicts to promote optimal fitness.
Strangely, though, the globally recognised
mecca for this high-tech, high-stakes
sport isn’t where you’d imagine. It’s not
Las Vegas or even London; it’s a small city
in the south of Poland called Katowice.
Historically a steel and coal mining town,
its skyline is still studded with hulking
industrial relics and dinosaur-like mining
machinery – perhaps not the kind of
futuristic Blade Runner-esqe setting you’d
imagine for the “home of esports”. Yet,
here I am at the ESL Sprite CS:GO Polish
Women’s Championships, watching two
teams, krisilarisy and Arcane Wave, play

One team is trying to plant a bomb,
the other defuse it, with plenty of sharp
shooting and sneaky subterfuge in the mix
to make it exciting. Julia ‘JuLKaa’ Marek,
the entry fragger (the player who leads
the charge into an area) for Arcane Wave,
coolly dispatches the last line of krisilarisy’s
defence on the tense Train stage of the
game, snatching tournament victory for her
side. The whole place erupts in a cacophony
of cheering, flashing lights, dry ice cannons,
indoor fireworks and banging dance
music. The new national champions pose
for selfies with jubilant supporters before
being interviewed by perky presenters in
headset mics and soberly congratulated by
expensively suited-and-booted pundits.
“It’s about tactics, really,” explains Marek,
whose role requires lightning reactions
and a killer instinct. “Using our brains,
taking time to reflect, and communicating
when anything goes wrong.” Backstage,
Marek cheerfully joins her fellow victorious
teammates sipping champagne from a
ludicrously huge silver trophy.
The tournament organiser, ESL (formerly
Electronic Sports League), can be thought
of as roughly analogous to FIFA in football.
With offices worldwide, it has an especially
large interest in Katowice. According to ESL
Poland spokesman Adrian Kostrzębski, city
bigwigs have made a deliberate effort to
move the town beyond its sooty past and
align it with the growing esports movement
– with striking success.
“The history of esports in Poland goes
back well over a decade,” Kostrzębski
tells me from the green room of the ESL
studio, as the din of the men’s national
championships rumbles away downstairs.
“In Warsaw, where I’m from, internet cafés
were setting up unofficial, self-organised
Counter Strike tournaments, with local
champions competing with other Warsaw
districts for the city crown. But nobody
outside the scene was aware of it. I thought
this would be good theatre, so I took these
competitions first to shopping malls, then to
cinemas. It attracted big audiences.
“News of what we were doing spread,
until one of my colleagues received a short

Poland,” says Kostrzębski of the debut
Masters tournament. “Nobody knew how
many people would come. We didn’t want
to show empty seats at the Spodek.” In the
end 15,000 faithful rocked up to the event
in 2013, with queues snaking hundreds of
metres out of the stadium. “Polish fans are
the best in the world, it turns out.”
Since then the annual Intel Extreme
Masters event has gone from strength
to strength. “Last time, the Polish prime
minister attended. That really changed
public perceptions. In the early days
we couldn’t persuade any media to cover
us. They thought it was just another nerdy
IT event. For this year’s Masters (28 Feb-
1 March) every single TV station and major
media outlet will be in attendance.”
ESL has become a boom industry in
Katowice. When Kostrzębski joined ESL
they had just nine employees in Poland; the

 current tally is 140. And they’re building a
new 6,000m2 TV studio just over the road.
The city, too, is supporting the businesses
springing up to serve this burgeoning sector,
bringing even more employment to town.
Katowice Gaming House, for instance, is
Poland’s first ever esports boot camp venue.
Touring teams from all over the esports
world are invited to stay for a few days
of intensive practice without distractions.
The gaming set-ups are intended to mimic
tournament conditions as closely as
possible, with the same standards of gaming
chairs and similar spec PCs, plus 381-cm HD

and support staff can monitor in-game
play and suggest refinements. There are

who has seen this town go from strength to
strength over the years.
“If you asked people 10 years ago what
they thought about Katowice, they would say
mining and industry,” Pirecki tells me,
in a training room at the boot camp, decked
out with a whiteboard and a softly humming
fridge stocked with energy drinks. “The
reputation has changed completely. People
want to stay now. There’s a new energy here.”

and when I visit on a Monday afternoon it’s
already buzzing with hip studenty types
tackling everything from retro console
platformers to bone-crunching beat ’em
ups. The bar serves very respectable beer
and cutesy Mario-themed shots, and is
decorated with cultish Manga soft toys
and action figures. Magda Jenczek, one
gamer I persuade to look up from her
joypad for a few moments, says she is well
aware of the big ESL presence in Katowice.
“They are really changing what this town
is. Years ago it was seen as a place to get
away from. Now it’s cool. I even know
people who are moving back here from
Warsaw because the restaurant and bar
scene has improved so much.”
Gaming has even found its way into the
education system, with courses in esports
being taught in select local high schools
and at the local university – Kostrzębski
is a lecturer. The idea, I should clarify, is
not to sit around fragging random n00bs
on CS:GO all day. Rather, students are
instructed on how to set up and organise
successful, profitable esports competitions
in the ESL mould.
“We teach how to plan and execute
events, and summarise results and revenue
for clients, partners and sponsors – really
show the numbers,” Kostrzębski says
proudly, before adding that he looks
forward to employing graduates of the
course in the not-too-distant future.

A delegation from Japan came to visit
him recently, such is Katowice’s renown,
to pick Kostrzębski’s brain about how
to successfully stage a tournament. ESL
is off to Tokyo this year for an esports
tournament, being held shortly before the
Olympic Games. And some say it won’t
be long before esports itself is actually an
official part of the celebrated games.
“It makes me so proud,” Kostrzębski
says, just as a harried-looking producer
in a headset politely summons him to
attendance for the men’s national final
downstairs. “I watched a big tournament
recently in New York. At the press
conference the winning team were asked
about their biggest dream. They said it’s
to win the Intel Masters in Katowice. The
best of the best now want to be here, in
Katowice, thanks to what we’ve achieved.”
And as he hurries off, Kostrzębski echoes
the words of the Arcane Wave star player
from earlier in the evening. “It’s all about
tactics, really.”

Yes to Yerevan
We’re always looking to expand our network
so you can explore as much of the world as
possible. With that in mind, we’re launching
new routes linking Vienna and Vilnius with
Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan,
Armenia. As of April 2020, its world-
renowned brandy, manti (baked dumplings
in tomato sauce with garlicky yoghurt), and
Soviet-era Cascade stairway will be easily
accessible to WIZZ passengers.

visitors to explore this historic city, home

anything but boring”
Cabin attendant Fanny Terebessy tells us why
she loves her job and what it entails
When did you start at Wizz Air?
I’ve been with Wizz Air for around
six years, as of 14 February – a nice
Valentine’s Day present for me.
What motivated you to work for
Wizz Air, in particular?
Wizz Air was always on my radar
as a cool, fast-growing airline and
I really wanted to stay and work
in Hungary. That was the most
important thing for me since my
family and friends live there and
I‘m very close to them.
What’s a normal day like?
The life of a Wizz Air cabin
attendant is anything but boring.
We get our schedule one month
ahead, so it’s very easy to organise
my life. This schedule even allows
me to prepare my own meals
before flights. We need to arrive for
the pre-flight briefing 70 minutes
beforehand, in uniform and ready
to fly. We fly to a number of
exciting destinations each month,
but at the end of the day I really
like to fly back to Budapest.
What skills do you need to be a
cabin attendant?
You have to be very calm, open
and friendly. It’s important that, if
someone has a problem, the cabin
attendant is calm, takes time to
understand what the issue is and
tries to resolve it.
People
Do you always fly with the same
crew or do you change it up?
We change it up. There are more
than 300 cabin crew at our
Budapest base and we fly to over
70 destinations. Because I’ve been
here for six years, I think I must
have flown with almost everybody.
I like being able to meet new
people on board, but sometimes I
can request a flight with one of my
best friends.
Does it feel strange when you’re a
passenger on Wizz Air?
I really enjoy it for about an hour.
After that I want to get up and
talk to the other cabin attendants.
The funny thing is, whenever I fly
on holiday and see my colleagues
at work, I feel like putting on the
uniform and doing the safety demo
with them.
Memorable moments?
The most memorable moment was
when my family surprised me on
board. I went to open the doors
for boarding and they were there
on the stairs. Doing the safety
demonstration for them was a very
special moment and I knew they
were very proud.
What’s the best thing about
your colleagues?
Wizz Air is a truly dynamic, cool
company, so we’re never bored.
My colleagues are all enthusiastic
and love their jobs. It’s good to
know you are part of a great team.

anyone?). Sanne Braams and
Nick Gibson, however, have gift
certificates to thank for their
careers as first officers.
“My parents gifted me a trial
flying lesson for my 15th birthday,”
explains Nick. “I really enjoyed
it and the lesson inspired me.
I went back every week to
complete my private pilot licence
(PPL) and then went on to get my
commercial pilot licence (CPL)
from CAE Oxford.”
Sanne also received her first
flight as a gift from her brother
(on the condition that he could
join her on it). “I already had
my car racing licence and loved
doing that. When I had my lesson,
I realised that flying a plane is
even cooler than driving racing
cars – and with this, you can
actually earn money!” she says.
The pair met at CAE Oxford
and began their relationship while
studying there. It wasn’t until
starting work that the challenges
of being a pilot couple became
clear. Sanne was based in France
and Nick in the UK, so they spent
over three years commuting
across Europe to see each other.
“It was frustrating because
one person’s days off often didn’t
coincide with those of the other,”
says Sanne. “I used to cry when
we said goodbye at the airport.
It sounds dramatic but I knew
our schedules would mean we
couldn’t see each other for
another three weeks or so.”
Wizz Air has done a lot to help
the couple’s relationship. Opening
a base in Luton meant that they

could both work out of the same
airport, and providing them with
a married person’s schedule of
five days working, four days off,
has meant they can see much
more of each other. “The airline
offered us the schedule and it
was the best thing we could have
ever hoped for. Compared to two
years ago, our lifestyle has been
transformed,” Nick explains.
During their days off together,
the couple love to travel around
the WIZZ network using their free
tickets, recently visiting Krakow.
Being able to relax and enjoy
their time off together means
they’re equally able to relax and
enjoy their work. According to
Sanne: “Being a pilot doesn’t feel
like a job, it’s more of a hobby.
You’re working, but it doesn’t
seem like that when you fly out
in good weather with a lovely
captain and a happy crew – the
day goes by before you know it.”
The best thing about the job
for Nick, is the view. “Climbing
over the Alps at sunrise, when
you can just see the snow settling
on the top of the mountains, is
incredible. You can try to take a
photo of it or describe it in words,
but neither can do it justice.”

What’s your WIZZ story?
I started with Wizz Air almost
three years ago as Ground
Operations Support Manager.
Now I oversee the team and focus
on performance improvement.
What is so special about being
part of the Wizz Air family?
I love that I get to work with smart
people committed to reforming
air travel. We have dozens of
initiatives that aim to create a
better passenger experience
at airports and on board. For
example, we’re setting up more
and more self-bag drop kiosks
at different airports as they save
passengers time. We’re also
working on improving the WIZZ
mobile app so we can better keep
passengers up to date on their
flight information before, during
and after their journey.
How is the Ground Operations
department organised?
We have Ground Operations
Managers who are responsible
for the day-to-day supervision of
the ground handling companies
we work with. These colleagues
have different airports under their
care so they’re often flying to our
destinations to meet local partners
and to ensure that the passengers
are served to the highest standard.
There are also junior colleagues
in three teams. The Disruption
Control Centre monitors our flights
and ensures that passengers
are assisted in the event of any
adverse situations. We also have
handling partners work together?
The passengers don’t meet Wizz
Air staff behind the check-in
desks or see them loading the
bags into the hold. These people
are actually the employees of our
ground handling partners. The
cabin crew is the first Wizz Air
personnel the passengers meet,
but that should not make any
difference. The ground handling
staff must represent our company
and provide an airport experience
that’s as seamless as possible.
What is your favourite WIZZ
destination?
I have a few and it’s hard to
choose! I love the Porto riverside,
Lyon’s old town, and the Spanish
Quarters in Naples. All of them are
whimsical and they each have their
own beautiful cuisine too.

Tell us about your role.

Most of my work is about ground
handling performance: both
monitoring and analysing the
conduct of our ground handling
partners and developing the
procedures by implementing new
digital solutions. I also oversee
the day-to-day handling activities
at our Belgian, French and
Portuguese destinations. Another
facet of my role is conducting
audits, so I move around and visit
our partners regularly. I enjoy this
hands-on part of the job.

Safe handling of hand luggage
Please ensure hand luggage remains safely stowed in
the locker or under the seat in front of you for takeoff,
landing, and at any time as instructed by the crew.
Take care when opening lockers, as falling items may
injure fellow passengers.
Please note that in case of evacuation all baggage

Safety equipment
It is an offence to tamper with or remove any safety
equipment from this aircraft, including adult and
infant life vest, infant safety belt or extension belt. It
is not allowed to remove or damage any on-board
informative placards.
Sharp items
If you need to dispose of any sharp items (eg,
hypodermic needles), please contact a cabin crew
member. Do not leave your needle or syringe behind.
Turbulence management
Turbulence can often occur unexpectedly. Whenever
seatbelt signs are switched on during the flight,
we ask our passengers to kindly follow cabin crew
instructions, keep seatbelts fastened and stow away
large electronic devices.
Safety of infants on board
Wizz Air has a clear procedure for infant (a child who
is less than two years of age) restraint systems, by
means of the single hook infant seatbelt. Only the
use of the single hook infant seatbelt is accepted.
Vests/slings cannot be used together with the infant
seatbelt. Wizz Air only accepts aft-facing car seats
when an extra seat is purchased. However, during
take-off and landing, and whenever the seatbelt
sign is switched on, infants should sit on an adult’s
lap with the seatbelt fastened. Life vests for infants
are available and are provided whenever flying over
water. All lavatories are equipped with nursing table.
Please do not leave children unattended in the cabin.

Portable electronic devices (PED) such as
cellphones, laptops, tablets and cameras can

Note: the crew is entitled to call for medical
assistance pre-flight if they deem it necessary and are
in doubt about your fitness for the flight.
Medical supplies on board
Keep any medication you may need in your hand
luggage and in its original packaging. Inform your
cabin crew of any allergies or illnesses. If you are
seriously ill or are travelling post-surgery, you will need
a medical certificate confirming that you are fit to fly.
If you have limited mobility, are hearing- or sight-
impaired, are pregnant, or are unable to understand/
react to safety instructions, you will be unable to sit in
the emergency exit rows or the front row.
