In May09, India’s total installed power capacity stands at 1, 47,402.81 MW.

52% is from state, 34% is from centre, and 13.5% is from Private sector initiative.

Major players in the Power sector can be broadly divided into public, private and international private sectors.

Coal fired plants constitute 54% of the installed generation capacity,

25% from hydel power,
10% gas based,
3% from nuclear energy and
8% from renewable sources

Mar2009 country’s gas-based capacity is 14,600MW.

India has the fifth largest electricity generation capacity in the world.

The third largest Transmission & Distribution network.

Coal-based power involve environmental concerns relating to emissions of suspended

particulate matter (SPM), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, methane and
other gases. On the other hand, large hydroplants can lead to soil degradation and erosion,
loss of forests, wildlife habitat and species diversity and most importantly, the displacement
of people.

Given limitations to the use of coal in terms of environmental considerations, quality and
supply constraints, gas is expected to play an increasingly important role in India’s power
sector. Gas-based power plants are becoming popular due to their low installation cost and
gestation period
Gas burnt in a boilerit converts water in2 steamrotates the gas turbineturbine
attached to AC Generatorconverts mechanical movement in2 electricity thru
electromagnets

METHODS OF GENERATING POWER

 Steam Generation Units- fossil fuels are burned in a boiler to heat water and
produce steam, which then turns a turbine to generate electricity. Natural gas may be
used for this process
 Centralized Gas Turbines- instead of heating steam to turn a turbine, hot gases
from burning fossil fuels (particularly natural gas) are used to turn the turbine and
generate electricity
 Combined Cycle Units- Many of the new natural gas fired power plants are what are
known as 'combined-cycle' units. In these types of generating facilities, there is both a
gas turbine and a steam unit, all in one. In combined-cycle plants, the waste heat from
the gas-turbine process is directed towards generating steam, which is then used to
generate electricity
 Distributed Generation- Distributed generation refers to the placement of
individual, smaller sized electric generation units at residential, commercial, and
industrial sites. They operate with small gas turbine or combustion engine units, or
natural gas fuel cells
 Industrial Natural Gas Fired Turbines
 Microturbines
 Fuel Cells
