A degree in chemical engineering will allow me to pursue my career in

that field and allow me the opportunity to develop my knowledge of

Chemistry and Maths. A degree in Chemical engineering will give me an
opportunity to create vital everyday products, while managing
resources and making them as eco- friendly as possible. I am aware
that chemical engineering is a flexible course which has a vast range of
career prospects and opportunities to travel abroad. I am eager to
explore this area of chemical engineering through petrochemicals and
power energy. I will aim for the continuous improvement and
development of a product. In the current economic climate, I am aware
of the importance of ensuring that the processes involved would be the
most cost effective and safest method.

I really enjoy looking at small reactions in class and discovering new

things. I would now like to work on a much larger scale where I would
be able to work with real life products. In my Chemistry class, I was
recently given the task of researching Biodegradable Polymers and
presenting my findings to my peers. I benefited from independent
research as I was not restricted on my discovery of Biopol’s individual
characteristics and the advantages they have in this present time of
global warming. In Maths class, I enjoy the challenge of thinking and
the process of applying logic to mathematical problems, however
difficult and regardless of the form in which they occur.

My hard work and dedication has been acknowledged by my teachers

and peers as they have nominated me as Prefect for two consecutive
years. This has allowed me to represent others in a fair and responsible
manner. Having been an ambassador for my school at the listening
panel for Government action on Climate change with MP Anne
McKechin, I have been given an opportunity to improve my public
speaking and diplomatic skills. I

I have taken part in the Young Enterprise and successfully completing

the business introduction, where my fellow team mates and I had to
plan, organise and finish a project. I enjoyed the chance to put some of
my business economic prospect into practice and I had an ideal chance
to boost my communication skills. This also gave me a chance to show
my leadership skills when I was given the role of team leader. We were
given a limited supply of materials and a small budget; we worked hard
as a team and we determined to achieve the most effective results
possible.

Taking part in The Mark Scott Leadership for Life Award has been a
demanding task both physically and mentally, and has played a key
input in the team working and communication skills that I possess. The
award included a camping expedition on Ben Nevis which tested my
stamina, perseverance and patience, but has given me a grand sense of
achievement. The award has also encouraged me to enjoy working
practically and challenging any problems that come my way.

I have voluntarily worked as a general assistant for The Salvation Army

for five months, where I undertook to help run the computer systems.
My duties included creating time sheets, helping others use software
and I also created Christmas leaflets for the shop. I benefited greatly
from planning the design of the leaflet and carrying the plan through to
reality. Through the voluntary work, I also gained work experience and
grew more confident in my communication skills through working with
the public in and around the shop floor.

Being a care leaver who has previously lived with more than ten people
in the same house, I have learned to get along with people of different
ages and cultures. This has taught me to deal with difficult situations in
a mature and empathic way. I currently live on my own in a one-
bedroom flat and have been there for nearly two years, which has put
me in charge of many responsibilities and has enforced great maturity
skills needed for university.

In my spare time I enjoy sports such as basketball and snowboarding

where I achieved a Snowboarding level 2 award, this showed my
determination to finish the race course despite a couple of sore
falls. I am currently part of the Hillhead High Girls basketball team
and we are presently in The Scottish Plate League. In every game,
we have to communicate to each other spontaneously, under
pressure and work as a team in order to achieve the necessary
results. Joining the team has encouraged me to improve my
fitness, and led me to build good social relationships with my team
mates.

At this present time, I am doing my Sports Leaders UK Level 2 Award in

Community Sports Leadership and I am really enjoying it. This
award has ingrained responsibility and organisation and I feel
trusted when I independently carry out safe, and enjoyable
Basketball sessions to Primary school pupils every Friday
afternoon.
