College is “Picturing the Casbah” dur-
ing its annual art exhibit and sale Dec.
4-6 in the Instruction North Building
Art Gallery on the college’s Sidney
campus.
The event features a studio open
house, art demonstrations and an art-
work sale. It is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec.
4-5 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 6. Work
from MCC’s art students and art club
members is featured, as well as pieces
created by community members.
“Art is a tasteful and welcome gift
for the holidays,” said MCC Visual Arts
Coordinator Carolyn Johnson. “We are
very fortunate to have so many talent-
ed artists whose work we may visually
enjoy as well as purchase at a very rea-
sonable cost.”
MCC Art Instructor Debbie Bell
said the exhibit showcases a variety of
unique pieces.
“We have really talented students
who have done fine artwork,” Bell said.
“The assignments have been challeng-
ing and the students have met these
challenges with interesting and cre-
ative solutions. I hope everyone will
come and see the art that is being cre-
ated at MCC.”
The event is in MCC’s Instruction
North Building, which features a spa-
cious gallery as well as modern instruc-
tional facilities.
“It’s great to be using our new gal-
lery space on a regular basis. Many
people are coming to MCC just to see
our changing exhibits every month.
The end of semester show and sale is
always appreciated by our patrons and
a great experience for our artists to
present their works in a professional
manner. Everyone is invited to enjoy
the beautiful art work and maybe pick
up some unique and affordable gifts,”

SIDNEY — The spirit and
splendor of the Renaissance will
come alive during Montcalm Com-
munity College’s Madrigal Dinner,
Dec. 10 and 11.
“The Madrigal Dinner is per-
formed every third year, and has
become a much-anticipated tradi-
tion at MCC. Each one gets more
authentic and elaborate,” said
MCC Performing Arts Coordinator
Val Vander Mark. “This year’s play
is Arnold the Falconer, a hilarious
take on the classic rivals scenario.
The costumes are elaborate, and
the music is some of the most live-
ly and interesting from the Renais-
sance.”
Guests will enjoy a leisurely,
five-course dinner while they watch
the antics of Arnold the Falconer
and experience Renaissance-era
vocal and instrumental music.
In this production, the court
of Robert the 1st of Ferrentino has
fallen on hard times, and the king
can only afford one jester. A joust
between the two rivals is arranged
to determine who will be the jester
and who will meet the royal ex-
ecutioner. A fair maiden arrives at
court with her not-so-fair mother.
They would like to decide the fair
maiden’s future and in the pro-
cess solve the jester dilemma. The
rivals vie for the fair maiden’s
hand (and a reprieve from the ex-
ecutioner) with gifts bought from
the local falconer, Arnold, whose
many birds save the day and line
Arnold’s purse as well. The audi-
ence will help cheer the two young
men on in their quest, adding to
the evening’s fun.
All performers, including wait-
ers and waitresses, will be in Re-
naissance costumes and guests

Jesse Reda has graduated from the
Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training
Corps) Leader Development and Assess-
ment Course, also known as “Operation
Warrior Forge,” at Fort Lewis, Tacoma,
Wash.
The 32 days of training provide the
best possible professional training and
evaluation for all cadets in the aspects of
military life, administration and logisti-
cal support. Although continued mili-
tary training and leadership develop-
ment is included in the curriculum, the
primary focus of the course is to develop
and evaluate each cadet’s officer poten-
tial as a leader by exercising the cadet’s
intelligence, common sense, ingenuity
and physical stamina. The cadet com-
mand assesses each cadet’s performance
and progress in officer traits, qualities
and professionalism while attending the
course.
Cadets in their junior and senior year
of college must complete the leadership

Vander Mark said that putting on the
elaborate production is a lot of work, but the
benefits to the students who participate and
the enthusiastic response from audiences are
“well worth the effort.”
“MCC students who participate in the
musical ensembles learn about Renaissance
styles of music from the inside out,” she said.
“Some students research period clothing and
make their own costumes. Servers learn Eliz-
abethan phrases in order to communicate in
an authentic way with the audience.”

Driver’s Ed For Dog Owners BIG BEN’S

(NAPSI) – When dog owners are behind the
wheel of a car, their dog can drive them to
distraction. And that, it appears, can lead to
dangerous situations for both.
That’s one of the key findings of a recent sur-
vey that examined what happens when dog
owners take their dog with them when they
hit the road.
Doggie Distractions
The survey was conducted by North America’s
largest motoring and leisure travel organiza-
tion--AAA--and Kurgo, which makes prod-
ucts specifically designed for traveling with
your dog. The survey found that 31 percent of
respondents admit to being distracted by their
dog while driving, while 59 percent say they
have participated in at least one distracting be-
havior while driving with their dog.
More than half--55 percent-- have petted their
dog while driving, and one in five--21 percent-
-allowed their dog to sit in their lap.
Other distracting behaviors that drivers admit-
ted to include giving food and water to their
dog (7 percent) and playing with their dog (5
percent). These kinds of behaviors can distract
the driver and increase the risk of a crash. The
AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that

Getting Your Teen Driver
Ready For The Road
(NAPSI) – There’s good news for parents
who have a teen who’s ready to begin driv-
ing. There are practical steps you can take
to keep your teen safe when he or she hits
the road.
Not only is it important for your new driver
to know how to be a safe and responsible
driver, it’s equally as important to know the
basics about the car itself and what to do in
an emergency. Here are some tips:
• Take the time to get to know your vehicle.
Whether it’s brand new or a well-used fam-
ily vehicle, have your teen take the time to
review the owner’s manual.
• Show your teen driver how to check the
oil, transmission and steering fluids, and
point out where the engine, battery, air filter
and radiator are located, as well as the reser-
voirs to fill for the radiator and windshield
washer.
• Teens can be notoriously hard on vehicles
when driving, and they don’t always adhere
to good maintenance practices. Those are
compelling reasons to upgrade to one of the
new generation of motor oils. This allows
for more miles between oil changes and pro-
vides an extra degree of protection against
haphazard maintenance.

“What are you going to all of that
trouble for?” your sister demands to
know after she hears you making an
appointment with a service station to
have your tires inspected. Unlike your
sister who lives in the Sunshine State,
you live up north, where winters can be
harsh. In order to ensure you get where
you need to this winter, you are having
your vehicle winterized, starting with
the tires.
Good tires can make all of the
difference on treacherous winter roads.
In order to prepare your vehicle for the
rough weather ahead, you must make
sure your tires are properly inflated.
Tires lose about a psi of air pressure
every month and every time the air
temperature drops about 10 degrees.
Vehicles with under-inflated tires do
not handle well, especially on icy
roads. They also increase wear and tear
and use more gas (and who needs that
with the price of gas these days).
If your vehicle is brand new, you
may not have to worry much about
the tire pressure. It probably came
equipped with a tire pressure monitor
that will inform you when the pressure
has dropped below a certain point. If
you have an older vehicle, you will
definitely need to keep an eye on
the tire pressure and have your tires
checked regularly.
You also need to keep an eye on
the tread depth. The more worn and
shallow the tread on your tires, the
less grip you will have on the road.
Depending upon where you live and
how treacherous the roads become in
the winter, you might want to consider
switching to winter tires. Designed

provide you with superior grip. Keep
in mind that you will need to replace all
four tires. Should you do just the back

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.
