ABSTRACT

This report of Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is written based
on my four month experience and discoveries in the program with Morgan Computer
Institute, Garki, FCT Abuja from 8th October, 2018 to 26th January, 2019. As earlier
stated, this report is based on the practical experiences and discoveries which I was
able to learn and improve my knowledge and skills in computer packages such as,
CorelDraw, Microsoft word and also how to use the printing/photocopying machine
and also how to laminate documents. This report is written in partial fulfillment of
the requirements for the Award of National Diploma (ND) in Computer Science,
School of Information Technology, Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa, Nasarawa State.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE SIWES


SIWES was established by the Industrial Training fund (ITF) in 1973 to solve
the problem of lack of adequate practical skills preparatory for employment
in industries by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions.

The Scheme exposes students to industry based skills necessary for a smooth
transaction from the classroom to the world of work. It affords students of
tertiary institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the
needed experience in handling machinery and equipment’s which are usually
not available in the educational institutions.

Participation in SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition for the award


of Diploma and Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most of higher
learning in the country, in accordance with the education policy of
government. The operators include; The ITF, the coordinating agencies
(NUC, NCCE, and NBTE), employers of labour and the institutions it is
planned to supervise occupational experience program involving practical
activities conducted outside of the regular classroom and in a real training
industrial setup.

Realizing the important role played by hand on technical education, the


Federal Government reviewed the operation and funding of the scheme and
made it compulsory for students majoring in technical, educational,
engineering, and applied under the scheme, students on Degree programmes
undertake a six months industrial work experience. According to Evens
(1971) one of the real advantages of supervised experience programme is it
adaptability to change through training; students can be aware of the change
method, market and equipment necessary for a successful industrial work
experience.

The attachment period is usually a maximum of sixteen weeks, during which


the students are expected to acquire additional practical experience to
supplement their course of study in the tertiary institutions.

As a requirement of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE),


university student are expected to undergo a compulsory industrial work
experience before obtaining their degree certificate.

SIWES is a program sponsored by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to


enable students’ in tertiary institution acquires practical knowledge on what
they are taught in their school. Apart from the academic obtained, SIWES
helps student understand the nature of his/her work in the nearest future. It
makes students to be able to predict what the future holds for him/her after
school.

This report is the outcome of the sixteen weeks practical training I had at
Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Area 11, Garki, FCT Abuja
as partial requirement for the award of National Diploma (ND) in Building
Technology.

1.2 AIM AND OBJECTIVES


1.2.1 AIM
The SIWES is aimed at exposing the students to the practical knowledge of
what have been taught in the class room.

1.2.2 OBJECTIVES
1. To gain experience in a working environment.
2. To use all knowledge acquired from the industrial training in the society.
3. To learn the acts of directing and producing.
4. To avail students the opportunity to implement the knowledge in real life
situations thereby closing the gap between theory and practical.
5. To promote the technical knowledge for the advancement of the nation and
the world at large.

1.3 SIGNIFICANT OF SIWES


It provides student with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge
in real life institution.

It prepares the student for the labour market after graduation.

It strengthens link between the employers, university, polytechnics and


industrial Training fund (ITF).

It exposes students to more practical work method and techniques.

1.4 BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION


1.4.1 THE FCT ADMINISTRATION
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is a Nigerian ministry
that administers the Federal Capital Territory, centered on Abuja. It is headed
by a Minister appointed by the President, assisted by a Permanent Secretary,
who is a career civil servant. The Federal Capital Territory Administration
was created by President Olusegun Obasanjo on December 31, 2004
following the scrapping of the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory
(MFCT). Seven new Mandate Secretariats were created for Education,
Transport, Agriculture and Rural Development, Health and Human Services,
Social development, Legal Services and Area Council. These Secretariats
were headed by non-career civil servants in an attempt to reduce
administrative bottlenecks. Two agencies are administered by the FCTA:
Abuja Environmental Protection Board, concerned with waste collection and
disposal and other environmental matters, and Abuja Geographical
Information System, which provides a computerized geo-spatial data
infrastructure and a one stop for all land matters for the FCT, used to facilitate
land acquisition and collect all land related revenue for the FCT.

1.4.2 VISION
Is to create a first class capital territory with effective service delivery
comparable to the best in the world.

1.4.3 MISSION
Is to build and administer a federal capital territory in strict compliance with
the original plan through the establishment of an effective, and enduring
service oriented Administration that can respond to the needs of all residents
and other stakeholders.

1.4.4 MANDATE
To oversee the infrastructural and physical development (planning,
design and construction) of the new Federal Capital. Ensuring that it
conforms to/surpasses the standard of new Capital cities around the
world. Paying special attention to inclusivity, functionality, design and
aesthetics.

1.4.6 OBLIGATIONS AND RIGHTS OF THE PUBLIC/STAKEHOLDERS


In order to assist the Ministry deliver efficient services to the nation, the public
is expected to fulfill the following obligations as a matter of civic duty:

a. Ensuring prompt payment of appropriate electricity bills, fees and


taxes.
b. Not entering into any arrangement that is unethical with either staff of
the Ministry, electricity companies or any other person for the purpose
of obtaining normal and official services.
c. Understanding that some grievances require investigation and exercise
of patience to obtain redress.
d. Ensuring proper use of facilities.
e. Non-vandalism of power facilities etc.
f. All Stakeholders are expected to fully meet their part of the agreement
and attend meetings for all relevant negotiations.

CHAPTER THREE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

3.1 SUMMARY

Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) this is a program set


aside to show students the practical areas of their discipline in higher learning
ground. This program was design to bridge the gap between theoretical and
practical aspects of students. So also to increase student self-esteem to be able
to stay and speak to people of high and low status.

3.2 CONCLUSION

Having undergone a successful SIWES, I hereby concluded that I have


acquired a lot of knowledge and that the SIWES have exposed me the practical
techniques and experience especially on the principle relating to the project of
renovation and innovation.

3.3 RECOMMENDATION

The committee of this program should be able to know what to do in other to


motivate the students to partake fully, looking into the financial benefit to
increase their morals. These are some of the recommendations;

1. Every institution should be able to sit with the directors of the I.T.F to look
into allowances allocated to each student.
2. Organization should be able to create a slope for the internship programs
which will be aired for immediate feedback.
3. The organization should assist the student in time of transportation
