INDUSTRIAL VISIT REPORT

440/220kv SUBSATION AT NELAMANGALA ,BANGALORE

DEPAERTMENT OF ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONICS
MSRIT BANGALORE
BY:DENNIS SAMUEL(1MS16EE015)

INTRODUCTION: A Batch of 30-40 students from EEE Dept (3rd year VI sem) visited 440 KV substation
on 3rd May 2019 located at Nelamangala 25km from the city which was organised by Mr.R.K.Sir. This
unit is mainly to step-down 440kv to 220kv and distribute to sub stations such as bescom etc.

The agenda of the industrial visit is as follows

 To know different types of lines coming from the generating station

 Why do we require a sub-station.
 The use of various components such as lighting arresters, wave traps ,CT,PT, and the use of
autotransformers.
 The safety measures that are taken at a sub-station.

Brief Summary:
Nelamangala power sub-station is situated 25km from Bangalore the site is established in a 118 acres plot. The incoming
440kv is stepped down to 220kv and given to Bescom to further step down for distribution purposes. Two 220kv lines are
directly given to CPRI & BMRCL where it is converted to DC as per their requirements.

Often the lines were tripping due to cascading effect which causes total grid failure leaving the whole city and some parts of
Karnataka power less. To compensate for this, the substation takes an additional supply from GOOTY which is located in
Andra Pradesh which is operated and maintained by KPTCL(Karnataka Power Transmission Co-operative Limited). During
the visit we learnt the various components that are being used they are Anti fog insulators , Aluminium jumpers , Aluminium
T clamps , T connectors , circuit breakers , spacers. The sub-station uses relay system which is used to detect faults which
occur at the sub-station which sends messages to the control room.

CVT’s are also used to serve as coupling condensers for connecting equipment’s. Wave traps are being used to prevent
telecommunication signals getting into the station, power transformers are being used with a ratio of 500-1000-2000.
Lighting arrester play an important role in the design of a sub-station because it prevents the station from lighting during
monsoon season.

Circuit breakers play an important role as it is one among the safety components, the circuit breakers used in this sub-station
are single phase two pole . The opening and closing of the circuit breaker are controlled by a highly pressurized gas SF6 the
reason for the use of this gas is that it is highly stable cheap and long lasting which is basically used for arc quenching. The
sub-station is equipped with 11 auto-transformer where 9 of them are used while the other two are for stand by purposes
or the all 11 transformers are rotated one after the other for quality checks. They use silica gel which absorbs the moisture
in the transformer which basically acts as breathers for the auto-transformer, between two transformer concrete walls are
built for safety measures in case of any accidents.he ground is filled with gravel so that during monsoon seasons the rain
water is spread uniformly across so that there are no puddles in the area and also for earthing distribution and also to
prevent reptiles from entering the zone.

Finally to conclude , the industrial visit was very useful giving an insight on the industrial applications of the components
that were learnt theoretically and also additional knowledge of transmission and distribution system.
