China is now a massive producer and, in terms of export, dominates all

other producers. It is the top exporter of all the sports goods items
exported by Pakistan. Italy is also a major exporter of ski suits and
swimwear, as is Thailand of tennis and golf balls.

According to the survey results, China's sports and related industries had around
2.56 million employees in 2006 and generated about 98.3 billion yuan in added
value, which is 0.46 percent of China's GDP for the same year. 

In 2007, the sports and related industries had over 2.84 million employees and
generated about 126.5 billion yuan in added value, 0.49 percent of China's GDP, an
increase of almost 23 percent from the previous year in price-adjusted terms. 

In 2008, the sports and related industries had almost 3.17 million employees and
generated about 155.5 billion yuan in added value, 0.52 percent of China's GDP, an
increase of more than 16 percent from the previous year in price-adjusted terms.

The data for three consecutive years, 2006—2008 can comprehensively and
accurately reveal the basic information on the development of China's sports
industry.

Yang Shu'an, deputy general-director of the State General Administration of Sports


(SGAS), said that as the first survey conducted by government departments, it has
generally collected information on the size of China's sports industry. It is of
landmark significance in promoting the development of China's sports industry.

The special survey on China's sports industry and related industries was conducted
in 16 provinces and municipalities including Beijing, Shanxi, Heilongjiang, Shanghai
and Jiangsu between September 2008 and June 2009. 

The survey was co-organized by the State General Administration of Sports (SGAS)
and the National Bureau of Statistics and conducted by the Chinese Association of
Sport Industry.

The sports entertainment business plays a leading role in the sports industry, stimulating the
development of related industries, such as sports sponsorship, TV relay, sports media, sports
advertising, and the sports lottery. A government economic forecast indicates that by 2010, the
total value of China's sporting goods industry will represent 1.5 percent of GDP.
