As you know, the article that was published in the Washingéon Pos ast Thursday was based on an outside study by two researchers associated with the MIT Election Data and Science Lab. While the two authors are staff members at the MIT Election Data and Science Lab, they carried out the project they described in their piece as independent contractors to the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), an ‘economic policy think tank based in Washington, DC. Since the article was published, our communications team members have worked to correct the misconception that this study was undertaken as part of the two researchers’ work at MIT, as you can see in this Reuters article. The researchers have also helped to clarify in media interviews that this work ‘was done independently of their work at the MIT Election Data and Science Lab, as noted in this New Yord: Times article. With academic freedom as a guiding principle, faculty and other researchers are free to publish and express their views, and that in doing so they are speaking for themselves and not reflecting the views of their affiliated labs, departments and centers or of the Institute. The MIT Election Data and Science Lab communications team and the researchers will continue to clarify, when asked, that this study was conducted independently of MIT; that it should be referred to as a CEPR study; and that we do not endorse or otherwise offer an opinion on the findings. Como es de su conocimiento, el articulo que fue publicado en el Washington Post el pasado jueves estuvo basado en un estudio externo de dos investigadores asociados con el Laboratorio de Datos de Elecciones y Ciencia del MIT (MIT Election Data and Science Lab). Si bien los dos autores son parte del staff de este laboratorio, ellos llevaron a cabo este proyecto como consultores independientes del Centro de Investigaciones de Economia y Politica (CEPR ~ Center for Economic and Policy Research), una institucién de economia y politica que esta en Washington DC.
