LULAC: International Women’s Day

Is A Time For Equity And Justice
Nation’s Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization
Says Latinas Have Earned Their Place at The Table
Washington, DC - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) joins the world in
celebrating International Women’s Day. This year’s theme is, “I am Generation Equality: Realizing
Women’s Rights”. Women have always played an important role in LULAC and today we hear from
three leaders who share what today means to them:
Dr. Elba Garcia - First Lady of LULAC

“This is a day to celebrate women’s achievements throughout history and what makes 2020 even
more important is that this year we are celebrating the centennial of women’s right to vote!
Women’s contributions can best be acknowledged by paying them equal to what men earn for
doing the same job. As a Latina, I can’t believe that 57 years after the Equal Pay Act was enacted
into law, we are still the ones that get paid the least. Ultimately, we need to continue to elect more
women who will promote and enforce laws regarding gender equality and I intend to continue
fighting for it.”
Sindy Benavides - National Chief Executive Officer, LULAC

“We are living in a time when courageous women are boldly running for elected office and yet
others still struggle to feed and clothe their children --- such is the inequity that we must confront
and resolve in our nation. If we are to be a symbol of hope to the world, we must be so for all,
irrespective of our gender and we must begin here at home and we must do so now!
This is not a struggle solely over a decimal point in a row of numbers on a paycheck. Rather, it is
about rewarding dignity earned by the lineage of generations of women in America. We have stood
proudly and paid with the sweat of our foreheads, the bleeding of our calloused hands and the
aching of our tired bodies without complaint, during peace and during war. Our struggle is not
about a dollar sign; rather, it is about a sign of respect for women --- wives, daughters, sisters,
mothers --- all worthy in whatever industry, profession, trade or task they have chosen or have
been forced by circumstances to accept.
On this International Women’s Day, we say together, from the social injustice, ONE DAY WE WILL
BE FREE! From the misogyny that some use to try and limit us, FREEDOM IS COMING! And from
the abuse that some of us endure daily even from those closest to us, dear God, FREE US! We
are tired of the failed promises but we will not yield. We are desperate for relief, but we will not be
despondent. Yes, we are deserving of far better and we are determined to achieve it! This is our
outcry to the world and we will be heard.”

“The women of Puerto Rico, like women throughout the United States, are a major part of the very
backbone that defines the strength of our country. We are as capable, as hardworking and possess
the same or greater tolerance to endure the sacrifices required to sustain ourselves and our
families. We, the women of Puerto Rico on the island, have suffered and survived a great deal of
loss and heartache through two devastating natural disasters of historic proportions since 2017 and
yet, here we are!
May this International Women’s Day remind the world that we are the ones blessed to be the birth
givers. And while we may toil from dawn to dusk both outside and within our homes to help provide
for our needs today, our greatest hope is for tomorrow and a planet that is healthy so that our
children and their children will be allowed live and prosper in peace and well-being. This is the
greatest gift that could be bestowed upon women worldwide.”

Mujer es el momento para la equidad
y la justicia
La Organización de Derechos Civiles Latinos más Antigua y Más
Grande de la Nación dice que Latinas se han Ganado su Lugar en
la Mesa
Washington, DC - La Liga de Ciudadanos Latinos Unidos (LULAC) se une al mundo para celebrar
el Día Internacional de la Mujer. El tema de este año es: "Soy Generación de la Igualdad:
Realizando los derechos de las Mujeres". Las mujeres siempre han jugado un papel importante en
LULAC y hoy escuchamos a tres líderes compartir lo que hoy significa para ellas:

“¡Este es un día para celebrar los logros de las mujeres a lo largo de la historia y lo que hace que
2020 sea aún más importante es que este año celebramos el centenario del derecho al voto de las
mujeres! Las contribuciones de las mujeres pueden reconocerse mejor pagando igual a lo que
ganan los hombres por hacer el mismo trabajo. Cómo latina, no puedo creer que 57 años después
de haber aprobado de la Ley de Igualdad Salarial, sigamos siendo las que menos sueldo
recibimos. Realmente, debemos continuar eligiendo a más mujeres que promoverán y harán
cumplir las leyes sobre igualdad de género y tengo la intención de seguir luchando por ello.”

“Estamos viviendo en una época en que mujeres valientes se lanzan para servir en puestos
elegidos y aún otras luchan por alimentar y vestir a sus hijos, tal es la inequidad que debemos
enfrentar y resolver en nuestra nación. Si queremos ser un símbolo de esperanza para el mundo,
debemos serlo para todos, independientemente de su género y debemos comenzar aquí en casa
y hacerlo ahora!

Esta no es una lucha únicamente por un punto decimal en una fila de números en un cheque de
pago. Más bien, se trata de recompensar la dignidad ganada por el linaje de generaciones de
mujeres en los Estados Unidos. Nos hemos mantenido orgullosas y hemos pagado con el sudor
de nuestras frentes, el sangrado de nuestras manos callosas y el dolor de nuestros cuerpos
cansados sin quejarnos. Todo, por este país, durante tiempos de paz como también, tiempos de
guerra. Nuestra lucha no se trata de un signo de dólar; más bien, se trata de una señal de respeto
por las mujeres --- esposas, hijas, hermanas, madres --- todas dignas en cualquier industria,
profesión, oficio o tarea que hayan elegido o hayan sido obligadas por las circunstancias, tener
que aceptar.
En este Día Internacional de la Mujer, decimos juntas, de la injusticia social, ¡Nos LIBRAREMOS!
De la misoginia que algunos usan para tratar de limitarnos, ¡Nos LIBRAREMOS! Y del abuso que
algunas de nosotras sufrimos diariamente, incluso de las personas más cercanas a nosotras,
querido Dios, ¡LÍBRANOS! Estamos cansadas de las promesas fallidas pero no cederemos.
Estamos desesperadas por alivio, pero no estaremos abatidas. Sí, merecemos mucho mejor y
estamos decididas a lograrlo. Este es nuestro clamor al mundo y seremos escuchadas.”

“Las mujeres de Puerto Rico, como las mujeres en todos los Estados Unidos, son una parte
importante de la columna vertebral que define la fortaleza de nuestro país. Somos tan capaces,
tan trabajadoras y poseemos la misma o mayor tolerancia para soportar los sacrificios necesarios
para sostenernos a nosotras mismas y a nuestras familias. Nosotras, las mujeres de Puerto Rico
en la isla, hemos sufrido y sobrevivido una gran cantidad de pérdidas y angustias a través de dos
desastres naturales devastadores de proporciones históricas desde 2017 y, sin embargo, ¡aquí
estamos!

Que este Día Internacional de la Mujer le recuerde al mundo que somos las bendecidas por ser las
que dan a luz. Y si bien podemos trabajar desde el amanecer hasta el anochecer tanto fuera como
dentro de nuestros hogares para ayudar a satisfacer nuestras necesidades hoy, nuestra mayor
esperanza es para el mañana y un planeta que sea saludable para que nuestros hijos y sus hijos
puedan vivir y prosperar en paz y bienestar. Este es el mejor regalo que podría otorgarse en este
día a las mujeres a través del mundo.”
