GENESIS
The two-year programme of International Business at GITAM University is the flagship
programme of erstwhile GITAM Institute of Foreign Trade (GIFT). The Programme has
become popular throughout the country. Every year students are admitted on an average
from 20 states, and they are successfully placed in Industry in India and abroad. In
order to promote International Business further, two more Programmes are started in
International Banking and Finance, and Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

For 2011-2013 Admissions, the following Programmes are offered:

• MBA (Global Logistics & Supply Chain Management)
The above three Programmes are exclusively serviced by the outstanding faculty of International
Business, distinguished faculty from Industry and other leading business schools in India and
abroad, and supported by advanced digital library, campus wide high speed networks, and
student support facilities such as executive hostels for boys and girls, Gym, Tennis Court, Food
Courts, Music Center, and e-Learning Centre. Year after year, International Business Programmes
are rated second best in the country, and first in South India. Dewang Mehta Award was given
to International Business Programme of GITAM for the Best curriculum inputs during the year
2008.
The Programmes are supported by Intelligroups (Pvt.) Ltd. Hyderabad, and HDFC Bank, Mumbai to
offer SAP Modules and Retail Banking electives respectively.

With a view to enrich the three Programmes further, initiatives are made to increase the number of tie-ups with B-Schools abroad

GITAM University is a premier educational seat of higher learning in the state of


Andhra Pradesh dedicated to the cause of teaching, research, and consultancy of

Research Programmes in diverse disciplines such as Engineering, Science, Management,
International Business and Pharmacy. The University is located at Visakhapatnam on
the sea-shore of Bay of Bengal providing a pristine, calm and serene atmosphere with

Message from Chairperson – PGP

Markets have emerged as the most powerful “Institution” both for creating and conscripting the wealth of nations in the 21st
century. The current Financial Meltdown has spiked the world economy. But there is no point in brawling on the limitations of the
markets. Some financial greed, somewhere, can bring down the world economy as experienced in the 1930s. This is bound to happen
over long lengths of time when large and discontinuous systems, like the economic system, suddenly change due to stress build–up.
The only way out is to better understand the financial deteriorations, the economic imbalances and the discontinuities in the world
economic activity. Thus, there is a great need to rethinking and reinventing of the future and this necessitates reinventing of the
markets, financial competition, leadership and principles.
Our two-year MBA Programmes in International Business (IB), International Banking and Finance (IBF), Global Logistics and Supply
Chain Management (GLSCM) enables the students to ride through the ‘learning curve’ on all those aspects mentioned above. The
Programme design is rooted in the real world of innovative management practices, using an optimal combination of lectures, case
studies and assignments as the pedagogy. Strong emphasis is laid on participative learning. We have always strived continuously
to race with the best. Our MBA Programmes are differentiated by building innovative practices, developing curriculum that address
the needs of industry that aspire for global standards. This has laid to attract better quality standards, teachers and recruiters into
our fold.
The first year of our Programme devotes sufficient time to equip the students with all those general management skills in economics,
finance, marketing, international trade logistics, supply chain management and human resource as they are essential for any general
managerial decision making. The second year of the Programme is distinctly designed to gain expertise in the area of International
Business, International Banking and Finance and Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Other important features of our
programme are: (i) A two-week pre-preparatory intensive coaching is given to train the non-finance students in finance, economics,
accounting, quantitative techniques, case method, etc so that students can start studying on a level-playing field: (ii) Besides our
own internationally experienced faculty from academics and the industry, we draw on the expertise of the IIM’s and other reputed
management institutes as guest (visiting) faculty. Also our students are sensitized to the social environment through social projects
in the second year.
We believe that management students should be exposed to the practical world for which an initiative has been made in this direction
by signing MoUs with Intelli Group, HDFC and other industries where our students would be drawn from these companies through an
experiential learning which would be offered by these companies to suit to the requirement of the standards. The institute is striving
to have many such MoUs in the days to come so as to build the competencies of the student population so as to make them ideally
fit for the market opportunities that exists in this globalised markets.
We believe that students cannot appreciate the complexity of markets functioning in other parts of the world by taking courses here
in India. They should experience it to believe it and understand. Precisely with this in view, our Institute has arranged tie-ups with
Burgundy School of Business, Dijon, Paris, University of Paris, Paris and other business schools in Europe for students as part of the
Exchange Programme from the IV Trimester onwards. We would like to use these tie-ups also to arrange for their summer projects
and research projects in Europe.
All these would enrich the students to face the world of business with a globally integrated mindset.

The Two-year full-time Programme in International Business is designed to empower students to become successful
business professionals in the challenging global scenario. In an age of blurred geographical frontiers, the Programme offers
practical insights into the international dimension of every business function. The curriculum and teaching methodology
are not limited to knowledge acquisition. The emphasis lies equally on developing value-based conduct, emotional maturity,
analytical ability, cross-functional capability and leadership skills. Students leave the portals with globally integrated

De-regulation and Liberalization of financial markets of the developed world, followed by the emerging economies, during
the past three decades, has brought in an era of cross border capital flows leveraged by IT, volatility, Euro Currency and
Derivatives. This created a need for a more equipped professional in the area of banking and finance, wherein
the existing courses, with the prime focus on domestic markets and traditional banking systems, were absolutely
inadequate.This has necessitated the requirement of a course in International Banking and Finance addressing the most
contemporary issues of the banking and financial services industry. The recent collapse of the US and Global markets has
triggered the need for the second phase of reforms in the academic input of such courses. With the increasing global
debate on the manifestations of the ruthless Capitalism and the supremacy of the US financial system has brought Risk
Management, Global Surveillance, Ethical Banking, Financial Prudence and Financial Inclusion to the main stage.
The Two Year MBA (IBF) has considered these changing needs and the future requirements of the industry in designing the
most contemporary curriculum for the course,benchmarketing with the best of the course of its kind.

Objectives
The Programme seeks to achieve the following objectives:
• To enable the students to become effective Banking Professionals in the International
Banking and Finance area in today’s globally competitive environment;
• To vest them with special skills to work in the area of international banking and finance;
• To equip them with the necessary skills for effectively operating in a dynamic multicultural

Supply Chain Management)

Global Logistics & Supply Chain Management have become the driving force for any organization to improve its efficiency and
effectiveness in the global and highly competitive environment of the twenty-first century. It has two crucial functions, viz. the
Physical function, concerned with production, storage and transportation, and the Market Mediation function, concerned with
ensuring that variety of products reaches the market place, match with the customer’s expectations. Effective execution of these
functions necessitates the implementation of several key processes such as a seamless manufacturing and logistics process,
a dynamic new product development process, and a support and service process. It is equally important to understand key
customer service criteria, define global performance metrics, benchmark the supply chain to uncover the best practices, and
use decision support tools for optimal network design and management.
