Individual  Overall  Excellence  
 
Below  are  a  new  set  of  Overall  Excellence  categories  that  honor  the  best  work  of  
individual  students  who  produce  consistently  high  quality  work.  Students’  work  
often  crosses  categories  but  is  in  the  same  general  area  of  production  from  any  
media.  These  awards  allow  the  best  of  students’  work  to  earn  recognition.  These  
awards  do  not  count  toward  any  Sweepstakes  points.  
 
NOTE:  Entries  may  be  from  any  student  media  (print,  broadcast,  online).  
 
Division  1:  Students  from  4-­‐year  schools,  regardless  of  enrollment  
Division  2:  Students  from  2-­‐year  schools,  regardless  of  enrollment  
 
Submission:  Please  package  all  materials  together,  properly  labeled  and  identified.  
Place  a  cover  sheet  on  top  of  each  packet  of  material.  Place  each  complete  entry  in    
a  9  x  13  or  similar  clasp  envelope  with  name  of  the  category  and  division  on  front.  
 
Print  examples:  complete  tear  sheets  properly  identified.  Online  examples:  printouts  
from  the  website.  Broadcast  examples:    CD  or  DVD  (the  five  examples  may  be  on  one  
CD/DVD,  properly  labeled).  
 
Cover  sheet  should  include:  
          Student’s  Name  
          School  
          Division  
          Category  
 
EACH  SCHOOL  MAY  NOMINATE  ONE  STUDENT  PER  CATEGORY  
 
Reporter  of  the  Year  –  Any  reporter  on  any  platform  can  be  nominated.  Entry  
should  include  five  (5)  stories  that  show  the  student’s  best  work,  which  can  include  
news,  features,  in-­‐depth  reporting  in  any  form.  Nominees  should  submit  a  letter  and  
a  letter  of  support  from  his/her  adviser.    
 
Photojournalist  of  the  Year  –  Any  photojournalist  on  any  platform  can  be  
nominated.  Entry  should  include  (5)  examples  that  show  the  student’s  best  work,  
which  can  include  visual  journalism  in  any  form.  Nominees  should  submit  a  letter  
and  a  letter  of  support  from  his/her  adviser.  
 
Designer  of  the  Year  –  Any  designer  on  any  platform  can  be  nominated.  Entry  
should  include  five  (5)  examples  that  show  the  student’s  best  work,  which  can  
include  design  in  any  form  (Web,  ad  design,  pages,  etc.).  Nominees  should  submit  a  
letter  and  a  letter  of  support  from  his/her  adviser.    
 
Editor/Director  of  the  Year  –  Any  editor/director  on  any  platform  can  be  
nominated.  Entry  should  include  five  (5)  examples  that  show  the  student’s  best  
work  and  leadership  of  staff,  which  can  include  news  judgment,  news  play,  editorial  
decisions  and  bylined  content.  Nominees  should  submit  a  letter  and  a  letter  of  
support  from  his/her  adviser.
