Keeping Contaminants At Bay
Raw natural gas contains a combination of solid and liquid contaminants that can include:
➤ Acid Gas - hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide

➤ Pipeline and well treatment chemicals

➤ Water vapor

➤ Iron sulfide

➤ Iron oxide

These contaminants are potential contributors to processing equipment fouling and

pipeline corrosion. As a result, contamination of the natural gas stream leads to:
➤ Reduced production

➤ Off-spec gas

➤ Foaming

➤ Fouling of heat exchange surfaces

➤ Corrosion of processing and distribution equipment,

leading to breakdown or complete failure

1. Inlet Gas Separation
The Process:
Natural gas gathering systems deliver large volumes of gas via pipeline to the central
inlet of the gas processing facility. Removal of solid contaminants and free liquids present
in the inlet gas is an important first step in the protection of downstream processes.
The Problem:
Iron oxides, iron sulfides, dirt, and a variety of deformable particles suspended in field gas
can flow directly into the processing system. Effective removal of these contaminants
can prevent fouling in gas sweetening and dehydration systems. Multi-stage separators or
an inlet gas coalescing filter system are typically used upstream of the sweetening system
to provide protection. In both systems, cartridge filters must provide reliable particulate
removal and long service life.

Figure 2
The Solution:
A Petro-Klean filtration system, using M200 series cartridges, placed ahead of the
liquid/gas coalescer or incorporated into a multi-stage separator will efficiently remove
solids and deformable contaminants that would quickly plug competitive filter
elements. Petro-Klean filtration protects downstream processes and will extend
the service life of coalescer systems. Direct process benefits include:
➤ Consistently clean natural gas feed

➤ Reduced process upsets and associated downtime

➤ Reduced filter change-out frequency.

2. Amine Sweetening
The Process
Gas processing facilities typically use amines as treatment solvents to remove acid
gas components in the natural gas stream. Amines, such as MDEA, DEA, MEA and
many specially designed formulations absorb hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon
dioxide (CO2) to “sweeten” the gas stream. Efficient amine filtration is a critical part
of a well-functioning system.

Figure 3

The Problem
Solid contaminants in the amine system cause many problems including:
Foaming - results in amine carry-over, reduced plant throughput,
and increased chemical usage.
Contactor Plugging - results in amine carry-over, high differential pressure,
and reduced plant throughput
Heat Exchanger / Reboiler Fouling - results in high energy consumption,
poor heat transfer, and equipment corrosion
Carbon Bed Fouling - results in reduced absorptive capacity and frequent
regeneration or replacement

Table 3
Amine Sweetening Application Guide

Process Recommended CUNO Filter & Rating Recommended Flow Rate Recommended Housing
Amine Sweetening Petro-Klean - 10 Micron Absolute 2 gpm / 10" filter element ES Housing

4
The Solution
Ten micron absolute rated rigid Petro-Klean filters are recommended upstream and
downstream of the carbon bed in the rich amine line. Locating the filter in the rich
line upstream of heat exchanger protects both the heat exchanger and stripper. The
carbon filter removes entrained hydrocarbons and surface active compounds reducing
the tendency of the amine solution in the contactor to foam. Petro-Klean elements
upstream of the carbon filter remove solids exiting the contactor and extend the carbon
filter’s life. Downstream filters will remove any carbon fines from the recirculating
amine stream. Filtration with Petro-Klean filter elements improves process efficiency,
provides process protection and ensures natural gas quality. For more information
about Petro-Klean filter cartridges, refer to page 14 of this catalog.

natural gas. The raw natural gas contains approximately 89% methane and 11% carbon
dioxide. The amine sweetening system reduces the CO2 content to less than 2.3%.
The plant is plumbed to allow amine from one of three “trains” through the filtration
Using equipment. When contaminated amine was delivered to the filtration equipment,
Petro-Klean problems would occur during each startup. Competitive cartridges needed to be
changed two or three times in the early stages of a filtration cycle (240 cartridges,
lowered the each 40" long), and flow bypass around the filters was necessary, even during the startup
transient. Typically, the plant had to operate with only 50% of the amine stream passing
annual through the filter. Operation at levels below 100% filtration of the amine lengthened the
filtration costs time required to clean the amine adequately, delaying availability of the filtration equipment
for the other amine trains. Plant management sought to shorten turnaround time and
by $250,000! to decrease filtration costs by evaluating different filter cartridges.

Results with Petro-Klean

➤ Filter life increased 300-350%
➤ Filtered amine quality significantly improved
➤ 100% amine stream (full flow) filtration, no bypass

The Savings with Petro-Klean

$250,000 total annual filtration cost reduction through:
➤ Major reduction in filter cartridge usage and disposal costs
➤ Significant labor savings
➤ Reduced fouling of heat transfer surfaces
➤ Extended time intervals between maintenance and shutdown

3. Glycol Dehydration
The Process
Glycol is the treatment solvent normally used to remove water vapor from natural
gas downstream of an amine sweetening system or as a stand-alone system.

Figure 6

The Problem
Solid contaminants in the absorber gas feed can cause foaming and tray plugging
while solids present in the recirculating glycol stream from inefficient filtration
contribute to corrosion, fouling of the heat exchangers and reboilers, tray plugging
and pump seal failures. Frequent and unnecessary filter changes, off-spec gas,
and unnecessary downtime, all contribute to high operating cost.

The Solution
Petro-Klean (10µm absolute) filters installed at the absorber wet gas inlet will
eliminate solids in the wet gas stream and prevent foaming. In addition, Petro-Klean
cartridges installed both upstream and downstream of the carbon bed in the water
rich glycol stream will extend the life of the carbon bed, remove solids and carbon
fines, and further protect all downstream equipment.
Rigid Petro-Klean cartridges consistently hold contaminants within its graded
density structure. This provides uniform filtration performance and a significant
life advantage over compressible competitive cartridges. Petro-Klean also provides
absolute rated performance up to a recommended 35 psid, significantly reducing
change-outs.

Glycol Dehydration - Case Study
A major natural gas processing and distribution facility, using three glycol plants to
remove water vapor from sweet natural gas, was having costly filtration problems. The
Manager of Gas Operations experienced serious problems with the Triethylene Glycol
(TEG) dehydration filtration systems . Each of the plants experienced periodic total
collapse of the 10 micron nominal rolled fiber “sock” filters installed in two 16” diameter
filter housings. The filter cartridge failure resulted in immediate shutdown and filter
cartridge change-out. The TEG was contaminated to such an extent that complete
replacement was ultimately required. CUNO’s Scientific Applications Support Services
staff provided an in depth analysis of the plant’s filtration system and a recommendation
that the filter cartridges be changed from the compressible sock filters to the high
strength rigid Petro-Klean. The Manager authorized a trial of Petro-Klean filter cartridges
Using in one of the glycol dehydration plants.

Petro-Klean Results with Petro-Klean

lowered the The Petro-Klean cartridges were placed in service and provided 68 days of uninterrupted
annual service as opposed to an average of 5-8 days using the rolled fiber sock cartridges. In
addition, samples of TEG, taken from both the upstream and downstream sides of the
filtration costs Petro-Klean filter system, showed significant improvement in contaminant reduction
by $130,000! when compared to samples taken from a system using the sock filters.
As a result:
➤ After six months of evaluation, all three plants converted to Petro-Klean
➤ Petro-Klean filter change-out was 30-60 days, as opposed to 5-8 days
of the competition

The Savings with Petro-Klean

After changing to Petro-Klean, the facility realized:
➤ A $130,000 total filtration cost reduction,
a 50% reduction of total filtration cost!
➤ Reduced TEG replacement
➤ Reduced filter change-outs lowered labor and materials cost
➤ Significantly reduced plant down-time

4. Produced Water
The Process
Gas processing facilities employ a variety of “knock-out” devices and multistage
separators to remove as much water vapor from the natural gas stream as possible.
The produced water is reinjected for pressure maintenance, enhanced oil recovery,
or is ready for disposal.

Figure 8

The Problem
The “produced water” contains varying levels of solid contaminants including iron
oxides, iron sulfides, and asphaltines (tar-like particulate) that must be eliminated prior
to disposal or injection. Produced water filtration must remove solid contaminants
efficiently and provide consistent filtration performance. Disposal of the produced
water requires that the water quality meet local standards for Total Suspended Solids
(TSS). When re-injecting produced water, any bypass or unloading of contaminant
into the high pressure injection stream can cause injection well plugging or fracture,
requiring expensive workovers.

The Solution
Beta-Klean rigid filter cartridges provide the required performance necessary in
this critical application. Beta-Klean will not unload or allow bypass of contaminant
held within its rigid structure. In addition, Beta-Klean will provide a significant
life advantage over compressible competitive cartridges as they will not require
change-out up to a recommended 35 psid. 5 micron absolute Beta-Klean is
recommended for optimal performance.

5. Lube Oil Systems
The Process
Lubricating oil filtration is a key element in the efficient operation and protection of large
engines used to power compressors and other equipment in refineries. Without efficient
filtration, these systems experience significantly shorter time intervals between turn-around
with increased occurrence of emergency maintenance and the resulting downtime.
The Problem
Engine failures and increased maintenance are directly related to contaminated lubricating
oil. Rust, crankcase scale, debris from engine component wear must be removed to
ensure efficient operation, and trouble-free service life. Inadequate lube oil filtration
Figure 9 leads to mechanical shutdowns, lube oil replacement, frequent filter change-out and
higher operating costs.
The Solution
Converting to
Beta-Klean filtration Beta-Klean filter elements provide uniformly superior contaminant retention for lube
drastically reduced oil filtration. Unlike competitive compressible filter structures (sock, string-wound, and
“condition based” melt-blown) that frequently unload or lose efficiency as differential pressure increases
maintenance and pleated paper elements which have a relatively short service life and may rupture in
shutdowns and repairs the presence of water, Beta Klean filtration maintains an unparalleled degree of reliability

Case Study
Converting to Beta-Klean filtration for compressor lube oil systems at a major north-
western U.S. natural gas compression and distribution facility has dramatically reduced
“condition based” maintenance shutdown and repair. With the objective of reducing
particle count levels in their lube oil systems, a Beta-Klean 10 micron absolute cartridge
was selected for full scale testing.
➤ Average lube oil particle count dropped from 50 ppm to 7 ppm
➤ Initial system differential pressure was 6 psid; after 8 months of operation,
the differential pressure had risen to 10 psid
➤ 10 micron absolute Beta-Klean filtration is now the standard for all
lube oil systems at this large facility

6. Fuel Gas
The Process
Fuel gas is used throughout the gas processing facility
to drive a wide variety of engines, compressors, and
gas turbines.

The Problem
Contaminated fuel gas can cause excessive valve wear,
Figure 10
burner tip plugging, and other equipment failures.
Point-of-use filtration of fuel gas will reduce these
problems and improve combustion while reducing
overall maintenance.

The Solution
Filtration with absolute-rated, rigid Petro-Klean filter cartridges prevent solids from
reaching fuel burning equipment to:
➤ Improve combustion
➤ Protection of compressor station equipment
➤ Higher degree of safety and reliability

7. Instrument Gas
The Process
Instrument gas is delivered to regulating valves, meters
and other control and test equipment.

The Problem
Contaminated natural gas can cause excessive valve wear,
blockage of sensitive detection devices, and metering

equipment failures. The filtration of instrument gas
will reduce these problems and overall maintenance.

The Solution
Final filtration with absolute-rated, rigid Petro-Klean filter cartridges prevents
solids from reaching instrumentation to provide:
➤ Protection of sensitive measuring devices

8. Desiccant Dehydration
The Process
Desiccant dehydration systems are used to remove residual water vapor from
natural gas streams.

Figure 12

The Problem
Solid particulates in the natural gas stream can plug the pores of the absorbent in
desiccant dehydration systems causing bed degradation, release of desiccant fines,
and a loss of dehydration capacity.

The Solution
Upstream of the desiccant dehydration system, absolute-rated, rigid Petro-Klean
cartridges to provide particulate protection of contamination sensitive absorption
and regeneration towers. Downstream of the desiccant dehydration system,
Petro-Klean filtration effectively removes destructive desiccant fines, protecting
compressors and other equipment.

Benefits
➤ Performance levels improved
➤ Longer service life of downstream equipment
➤ Significantly reduced operating costs

The CUNO Filtration Advantage
Complete Filter Systems
CUNO’s product offering includes a comprehensive range of absolute rated
depth filters with broad chemical compatibility and special end fittings
specifically engineered to fit existing filter housings. For complete systems,
CUNO’s product offering includes ASME code filter vessels that
meet or exceed the demands of gas processing applications.

The Construction Advantage

CUNO’s Petro-Klean and Beta-Klean filters are absolute-rated
rigid structure elements that feature the following:
➤ A unique, grooved surface to increase surface area to provide
significantly longer service life
➤ A true graded density media structure that traps large particles in the
outer more open portion and finer particles in the inner, more densely
packed fiber matrix near the inside diameter of the filter for more
efficient contaminant retention and longer service life.
➤ Rigid filter elements that prevent the unloading of captured
contaminants even at elevated differential pressures and
under severe upset conditions.
➤ Chemically compatible materials of construction ensure
durability and long service life.
The result is a family of products that have greater service
life, enhanced contaminant holding capacity, reduced filter
cartridge change-out frequency, and provide higher quality
effluent than competitive products.

blinding of the outer surface by large particles.

12
The Performance Advantage
Performance of CUNO’s Petro-Klean and Beta-Klean absolute-rated filter cartridges
is measured by Beta Ratio. A Beta Ratio, represented by (β), is a measure of a filter’s
efficiency to remove from a process fluid particles larger than a given size, represented
by (βx). The Beta Ratio value is determined by dividing the number of particles
upstream of the filter by the number of particles downstream of the filter. A beta
ratio equal to 1000 (Beta 1000), represents a removal efficiency equal to 99.9%.
CUNO defines absolute-rated for Petro-Klean and Beta-Klean filters as the filters
ability to remove 99.9% of the particles at or above the rating.
The initial Beta-Ratio for all grades of Petro-Klean and Beta-Klean filter cartridges
is equal to or greater than 1000. The filter cartridges perform at or above this initial
value throughout the usable cartridge life! The Beta-Ratio values, at four differential
pressures (∆P), depicted in Graph 1 illustrate how competitive filters fail to achieve
the consistent performance of Petro-Klean. As the differential pressure increases, the
competitive filters exhibit decreasing or erratic Beta Ratio values. These values depict
Figure 15 - CUNO’s advanced filter
technology provides the performance either the unloading of previously held contaminants or an overall loss of filtration
that gas processors demand! efficiency. This erratic performance is caused by the compression and movement of
the filter medium under increased differential pressure, while the rigid Petro-Klean
provides consistent performance even under severe upset conditions.
The tortuous filter matrix paths and long residence time of a contaminant in a CUNO
Petro-Klean or Beta-Klean depth filter increases the likelihood of being trapped and
retained by the filter. In contrast, pleated and other surface-type filters can present
ineffective barriers to solid and deformable contaminants. In these filters, pores can
quickly plug and severely reduce service life. Also, previously held contaminants can
unload under pressure surges and increasing pressure drop.

PolyNet Filter PolyNet filter cartridges are CUNO’s latest advance in depth filtration technology.
The all polypropylene filter is constructed using a patent pending process that utilizes
Cartridges flow enhancing filter media and an innovative flow pattern. The result is an absolute-
rated filter with vastly superior on-stream life that provides more cost effective filtration
than conventional melt-blown filter technologies. PolyNet filter cartridges are particularly
well suited for demanding water injection, water flood, and enhanced oil recovery
filtration applications.
PolyNet Advantages
➤ Superior service life - as much as 4 times greater
dirt holding capacity than competitive filters
➤ All polypropylene depth filter cartridges for
broad chemical and temperature compatibility
➤ Ratings from 1-70 microns to suit a wide range of applications
➤ Absolute-rated performance for consistent filtration quality
Figure 18
➤ Exhibits superior particle retention under
increasing differential pressure
PolyNet Construction
CUNO designed the PolyNet cartridge to provide significantly superior service life while
maintaining a consistent filtration efficiency. PolyNet filters achieve this through an
innovative cartridge design that allows uniform distribution of fluid flow and contaminant
throughout the entire depth of the cartridge. PolyNet filter construction combines a
unique polypropylene media with fluid distribution netting to form multiple layers.
Critically positioned media flow channels allow greater movement of fluid from layer
to layer. Three distinct media sections, made from multiple media/netting layers, are
combined to form the filter cartridge.
The outer and middle sections contain multiple layers of interleaved filter media and
fluid distribution netting. Within each media layer a portion of the fluid travels through
the media while the balance of the fluid is delivered directly to the next distribution layer
through the flow channels. The fluid distribution netting provides longitudinal and
latitudinal flow paths to evenly distribute fluid flow across the surface of each successive
media layer.

Addressing Growing Environmental Concerns

There is a continued effort within the oil and gas industry to reduce disposal costs.
Table 14
Heating Values per 10" Element CUNO products feature a coreless design, use no metal parts, and are suitable for
shredding or incineration, to address this growing issue. Beta-Klean and Petro-Klean
2 Beta-Klean 8,000 BTU filters have long service lives which reduce both the number of filters needed and
2 Petro-Klean 8,000 BTU disposal costs in general.
2 #4 Fuel Oil 18,500 BTU Incineration can be a recommended option and the ease of incineration is
enhanced by the high BTU values (per 10" element) as shown in Table 14.
