SUPER VALU COMBATS YOUGHAL NATIONAL SCHOOLS

HURLING BLITZ
BUDGET-CUT BLUES IN
CORK SCHOOLS:
267K Worth of sports Equipment DONATED THROUGH
KIDS IN ACTION
24th November 2008: Primary school children in Cork have
received 267,000 worth of brand new sports equipment, donated
by local SuperValu stores and their customers through the Kids in
Action programme. A total 1.2 million worth of sports and active
play equipment has been donated by SuperValu in 2008 to primary
schools nationwide.
Launched in 2006, SuperValu Kids in Action is an annual initia-
tive which aims to encourage children to get involved in sport and
active play, while educating parents and children alike on the
importance of a balanced diet. The programme is aimed at chil-
dren aged between five and twelve years.
In 2008, 83% of primary schools across the country took part in
the initiative - which was supported by both the Irish Sports Youghal National Schools Hurling Blitz Shield Winners Gaelscoil Chorain team
with teacher Liam O’Riain
Council and the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute. Since the
launch of SuperValu Kids in Action, 3.5million worth of sports
equipment has been delivered to schools nationwide.
Between January and March, SuperValu customers in Cork col-
lected vouchers for Kids in Action with every 10 spent in store.
To further promote healthy eating, double vouchers were given for
all fruit and vegetable purchases. As part of the programme, in
conjunction with the INDI, SuperValu also arranged for a nutri-
tionist to visit participating schools and engage the children direct-
ly in discussions around healthy food options.
Said Donal Horgan, Managing Director, SuperValu: This extra
surge in resources for Irish primary schools demonstrates a real
community effort for the benefit of children in Cork and all
involved should be highly commended for their efforts. SuperValu
is delighted to be able to give a little back to the community and
help encourage a healthy lifestyle for primary school children.
SuperValu Kids in Action will be back again in January 2009, with
lots of new initiatives for participants to look forward too. Clonpriest NS hurling team runners up in the shield

Offering over 3,500 ft of dedicated office space, this enterprise
project is designed to provide a supportive environment to local
enterprises, while encouraging them to innovate and grow. Once
fully operational the centre will house in excess of 14 small local
companies.
The centre is designed to maximise the provision of space for
micro-enterprise start-ups, and is aimed at fostering an enterprise
culture in Youghal and its environs. Crucial to this project is the
competitive pricing structure - recognition that initial start-up
phase is often the most difficult task for every business especially
in today’s current economic environment.
A key feature of the facility will be the inclusion of eight ’hot
desks’ - individual work stations which can be rented from only
55(+vat) per week . A ’hot desk’ is the ideal environment for Kitty and Anne O’Connor, Michael Beecher, Pat Reilly, Chairman YDAAG, Sara

Under 16 League
Youghal 18 pts. - Sundays Well 0
Our under 16’s continued their good start to the league when they
travelled to Musgrave Park to take on Sunday’s Well recently.
Youghal were quick to settle down in this game and had the better
of the early exchanges after some good running by Danny O’Brien
and Aaron Daly. Newcomer Sean Meredith scored a great try near
the corner flag to give the seasiders a deserved lead.
The home team pressed hard for an equaliser but it was the
seasiders who extended their lead with a 40 metre penalty kick
from Dylan Power. This made the half time score 8 pts to nil in
Youghal’s favour.
In the second half Youghal wrapped up the points with further tries
from Dylan Power and winger Andrew Curtin to run out deserving
winners. Best for Youghal were Danny O’Brien and Jack Hall in Permanent TSB manager John Dunphy, Assistance manager Anne Taylor and
the forwards, while newcomers Sean Meredith and Andrew Curtin financial consultant Sinead Ahearne
tried hard in the back line.
Under 14 League
Youghal 12 pts. - Muskerry 5 pts.
Our under 14’s travelled to Muskerry recently and followed up on
their recent big win over Old Christians with another fine win over
a tough Muskerry XV. Youghal had first half tries from Killian
Ansbro and James Morley while Ciaran O’Brien added the conver-
sion points for one of the tries.
In the second half Muskerry had a very good try to narrow
Youghal’s lead but what looked like a perfectly legitimate try from
Killian Ansbro was ruled out for an earlier infringement. There
was no further scoring in the match with Youghal holding on for a
narrow but deserved win. Best for Youghal were James Morley,
Killian Ansbro, Andres Long, Elton Ruxton and Conor Finn. The
under 14’s next game is away to Midleton. Anyone interested in

Youghal United Awards Night YOUGHAL GAA NEWS

No matches to report on this week as the season draws to a close.
The Intermediate Hurlers have qualified for the league final where
they face Blarney in the decider but it looks like this game might
not take place until 2009 as Blarney are still involved in
Championship and available dates are very thin on the ground.
The fundraising committee have had a busy few weeks organising
a Car Boot Sale in the Club. The first of which took place on
Sunday last the 23rd. Stall holders started to arrive from 7:30am
to get the best vantage point with the first bargain hunters follow-
ing shortly after. Over 500 people waded through the 40 plus stalls
that were set out in the Hall and braved the horrific weather to

as they are normally stood in muck and puddles at other venues. It
was a trial run to revive what was one of the biggest Car Boot

Perks now stands and it is hoped to make this a Monthly Market.
The next date for the Market is January 11th but there is a
Christmas Craft Fair booked in for December 14th. Stalls for this
will be at a cost of 30 Euro and advertisements for same will be
appearing over the next couple of weeks. There will be a limited

DOWN MEMORY LANE
The hunt for a suitable piece of land was now underway and 1899
saw the once famous Youghal Cricket Club become defunct and
seeing the potential in this field Club officers opened negotiations
with the trustees of the Cricket Club for the use of the grounds at

of Dr. Murphy and Francis Ronayne who were Trustees of the
Cricket Club negotiations on the transfer of the tenancy agreement
were undertaken, but the owner of the land was very reluctant to
negotiate with the Gaelic Club. It is true to say that the Association
in the early Days did not endear itself to the upper class or the
absentee Landlords. To get over this problem Dr. Murphy agreed
to retain until his death some connection with the property for the
sole purpose of receiving rent from the Club and thus leaving the
youghal Gaelic Club as unofficial tennants of Copperalley.

will follow.

The Christmas turkey experience wouldn’t be the same without a

flavourful stuffing or two. Pan-frying or roasting the stuffing sep-
arately, rather than stuffing the bird, is the safest way to make a
stuffing because, in an unstuffed bird, the hot air of the oven is
Boutique
able to circulate easily inside the cavity of the bird, reducing the
cooking time, and the possible incidence of bacterial contamina-
tion.
If you decide to stuff the body cavity, don t overstuff. Pack the
stuffing in loosely, to allow the hot air to circulate. An alternative
is stuffing the smaller cavity of the neck-end of the bird. Always
be sure add the weight of the bird and the stuffing together to cal-
culate the correct cooking time. TURNOVER DAY YASMINE

Murphy
In every loving memory of my dear husband David,
Late of 1, O Reilly Terrace
Who died on Nov. 19th 2000 - Masses Offered
Eight years on still filled with sorrow, O how I wish I could see you tomorrow.
To hear your voice, your laugh once more, even to argue as we did before.
I often lie awake at night when others are asleep.
I take a walk down memory lane with tears upon my cheeks.
Some people say as time goes by the heartache will subside.
But the pain inside my heart today is the same as the day you died.
Always loved and missed by your wife Pearl.

There is never a waking moment when I don’t think of you. Every time I close my eyes
The way we used to sit and talk and things we used to do. I see your face so dear
At family gatherings you were always there telling stories, I feel your hands across my cheek
full of cheer. Singing songs and having the craic, roaring up the As you wipe away my tears
Rebels, we’ll be back. For no one knows my loss for you I hear your voice so soft and sweet
And a few would see me weep. I shed my tears of a broken heart Telling me you are near
As I lay me down to sleep. And every time I need someone
I know that you’ll be there
Love always Dad.
Sadly missed by your daughter Angeline and Loved and remembered by your daughter Pearl,
granddaughters Katie and Laura xxx son-in-law Mike, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Gone are the days we used to share Remember him with a smile today
But in our hearts you are always there He was not one for tears
The gates of memory will never close Reflect instead on the memories
We miss you more than anyone knows Of all the happy years
With tender love and deep regret Recall to mind the way he spoke
We who loved you, will never forget And all the things he said
His strength, his stance, the way he walked
Remember these instead.
Loved and missed always by your daughter Bridie, son-in-law
John, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Always loved by Sharon, Michael, Chloe and Amy

His charming ways and smiling face Eight years have passed without you, the saddest I have known.
Are a pleasure to recall The special things you did for me that only I have known.
He had a kindly word for each I thought I knew what heartache was, but I had not a clue.
And died beloved by all I found out the hard way Dad, the day that I lost you.
So much has changed since you’ve been gone To me you were one in a million, thoughtful, kind and true.
Through ups and downs our lives move on You will never be forgotten Dad, I thought the world of you
But as time rolls by one thing remains true
We will always love and remember you Always loved and missed by your daughter, Catherine,
partner Ger, grandchildren Jessica, Jennifer,
Always remembered by your son Sean and family Aisling, Ali and great granddaughter Lucy.

Though his smile is gone forever I treasure all the memories

And his hand I cannot touch In which you’ve played a part
I still have so many memories From the first I can remember
Of the Dad I loved so much Until we had to part
His memory is my keepsake A loving nature, a heart of gold,
With which I’ll never part The best father this world could hold
God has him in his keeping A laugh, a joke, a pint or two
I have him in my heart Dad, that is how I remember you.
Love you always Dad

NEW BOAT EXTENDS

AQUATREK’S VISION
By Christy Parker
Aquatrek, Youghal’s excellent sail training and leisure service
unveiled Nightvision,’ the latest addition to its fleet, amidst a win-
try chill at its base at Nealon’s Quay on November 22nd.
The Excalibur Rib was designed and built by Joe Collam of Cork
company Gale Force ventures. Joe is naval architect with 15 years
of Rib design experience. Aquatrek founders John Innes and John
Griffin developed and co-ordinated the advance onboard electron-
ics themselves.
In appearance a blue & yellow hued glamour craft, Nightvision is
a seriously capable and highly advanced vessel. With an estimat-
ed value of 65,000, it boasts two, twin controlled 75 hp engines, John Griffin and John Innes from Aquatrek pour champagne over the new boat at
modified slightly to hit a top speed of 38 knots. the launching ceremony at Nealons Quay
Built to carry four, seated crew, the safety attributes meet all
recruitments for Marine Department P6 (Passenger) Licence. "Her
two electric pumps can shift 4,000 litres of water an hour, as well
as a manual pump," says John Innes. A tacho system enables
engine trimming to allow the craft’s hull to rise or dip according to
conditions, thus contributing to fuel economy, comfort and safety
Hydraulic steering is facilitated by a twin tank fuel system that
carries a total of 220 litres, giving a 160-mile sailing range, with
facility to carry spare fuel also. A hand held chart plotter doubles
as an extra onboard guidance tool alongside a built-in colour chart
topper, with radar overlays.
The more scientific strata of safety features includes VHF DSC
radio, magnetic compass, colour depth sounder and, most impres-
sive and of all a top radar system. Digital Selective Calling, which
operates like a text messaging system, automatically informs
Coastguard services and all craft in the area similarly equipped of
the boats exact position once a button is pressed. A ’killcord device John and Mary Griffin with John and Laura Innes and their children Jason age 3
attaches each passenger or crew member to the boat and immedi- and 8 month old baby Katie with the newly christened boat
ately shuts down the engines should he or she fall overboard.
Aquatrek acquired Nightvision on a double incentive. "Its
immensely important for our Advanced Powerboat Course, which
is proving every popular," John explains. "That’s where the radar
comes into its own. All commercial skippering has to have that
qualification and it includes use of radar technology. We teach reg-
ular boat users in the skill too, including high speed night naviga-
tion in closed waters."
A secondary initiative will see Nightvision convey its crew on
what John calls, with the air of a man casually envisioning white
knuckles and stomachs hitting chins, "thrill rides." Basically this
