LESSON PLAN LEA AMBION

Algebra 1 Period 3, 4, 6 November 17, 2010

Agenda: LESSON TITLE: Unit 5, Section 5.4: Graphing in Slope-

Intercept Form
1. Quiz on slope-
intercept form GRADE LEVEL: Freshman/Sophomore High School
2. Expectations with TEXTBOOK OR RESOURCE AND RELEVANT PAGES:
whiteboard Algebra I Carnegie Learning Student Text pgs. 219-225 and note
packet
3. Section 5.4
Graphing in slope- OBJECTIVE: Given an equation in slope intercept form,
intercept form Notes students will be able to graph the equation in all four-quadrants
4. Homework: STANDARDS BEING ADDRESSED:
Graphing Slope-  A1.3.B Represent a function with a symbolic
Intercept Form expression, as a graph, in a table, and using words, and
Worksheet make connections among these representations.
 A1.4.B Write and graph an equation for a line given the slop and the y-intercept,
the slope and a point on the line, or two points on the line, and translate between
forms of linear equations.
 A1.4.C Identify and interpret the slope and intercepts of a linear function,
including equations for parallel and perpendicular lines.
ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING: Students will be given individual white boards where
they will draw graphs given an equation in slope-intercept form and tables on the doc
cam.
MATERIALS: pencil, note packet, individual white boards, whiteboard pens, homework
worksheet, quiz
EXPECTATIONS OF THE STUDENT:
Before class: During class: After class:
-Given a graph and a table -Given an equation in slope- -Complete assigned
of values, students should intercept form create a homework.
be able to write an equation graph
of a line in slope-intercept -Take notes in note packet.
form
-Participate in class activity.
INSTRUCTION:
 Individual whiteboards will be located with each pair of students on the desks.
 (10 minutes) Quiz on writing in slope-intercept from given a table of values and a
graph of a line.
 (2 minutes) Students will be reminded in the beginning of class of expectations
with school property. Do not play with boards until instructed to do so or will not
be able to participate.
 (10 minutes) Graphing in Slope-Intercept form Notes. Given y = 4 x + 1 draw

the graph
Directions for creating a graph given an
equation:
1. Start by plotting the y-intercept point given in
the equation. (y = 1, when x = 0)
2. Write the slope as a fraction:
+4 −4 # units up / down
4= = =
+1 −1 # units left / right
3. Plot next point and draw line.

2
 Try on your own: Given the equation of a line y = − x − 3 , draw the
3
graph.

Following the directions:

1. y = -3 when x = 0
2 −2 +2
2. Write slope as a fraction: − = =
3 +3 −3
3. Plot next point and draw line.

 In case there is confusion, one additional problem: Given the equation of a

line y = −2 x + 4 , draw the graph.

Following the directions:

1. y = 4 when x = 0
−2 +2
2. Write slope as a fraction: −2 = =
+1 −1
3. Plot next point and draw line.

 (15 minutes) Pass out pens to write on whiteboards and put worksheet on doc
cam for class participation [worksheet attached]
o Students will draw graphs on their white boards given an equation of a
line on the doc cam. I will assess students ability to create graphs
contingent on their participation
 Remainder of class: Pass out Homework sheet, students use rest of class time for
homework and announce that the last 3 homework pages will be checked during
lab tomorrow.

REFLECTION:
-Reduce time with whiteboards to reduce the amount of time students can get off track
and still have enough time to get a shore formative assessment.
-Should have reviewed my quiz a little bit harder before handing them out to find
mistakes before my students did. However, only a small handful of students actually
discovered the error to my surprise.
-Students rarely read the directions although they were in bold print and had to be
reminded of what to do for the quiz.
-Students are still confused about slope and y-intercept and how it relates to the slope-
intercept form.
