MARVELLOUS MAIN STREET MURAL

CELEBRATES YOUGHAL’S HERITAGE.
By Christy Parker
Seldom has an artwork struck so striking a presence in Youghal
than the unique, colour-exploding mural that has suddenly
appeared on the North Main Street. Closer inspection of the space
adjacent to the former Collin’s bakery reveals a work of 16 sepa-
rate pieces, each bearing a distinctive style but joined jigsaw-like
into a shared picture and theme:
That theme is ’The Historic Walled Port of Youghal’ and is a col-
laboration between obliging local artist Owen Scuffins and dozens
of Youghal’s youthful Dali’s and Picasso’s!
The mural project was organised by Youghal Celebrates History,
the annual festival of which recurs at the end of September. YCH
decided Youghal’s children should take active celebrate their local
history, presumably fearing that the waterfalls known as ’summer

Youghal’s heritage and history.
Owen diligently consulted "old books and pamphlets" (inculding
a 1600 town map), travelled the town taking photos and, where a
void existed, imagined a long-departed landmark such as
Windmill Hill’s windmill or an invading sailboat. He treated the
boards with eternity-lasting preservative (to survive under the sea
of course) before sketching his scenes, using the artistic excllence
by which he is gifted.
The sketched work was further divided into 16 pieces, each bear-
ing at least one historic building. These were given to the follow-
ing recipients: Gaelscoil Choran, Bunscoil Mhuire, South Abbey
National School, Pobalscoil na Trionoide (CSPE- Civic Social and

PLEXUS SPECIAL NEEDS Blackwater Homes Sponsorship for

St. Marys Collegiate Organ Project
PROGRAMME
Learning difficulties such as Dyslexia, ADD and ADHD are affect-
ing thousands of children all over Ireland. These children are
awaiting proper assessment with regard to their conditions, in the
hope that treatment can be provided to enable them to overcome
their difficulties. However, conventional methods fall far short of
understanding the nature of these conditions, and children as in the
cases of ADD and ADHD are prescribed medication such as
Ritalin, which only sedates the child, and in no way offers a solu-
tion for the real causes of the problem. These issues create huge
amounts of emotional tension for parents and teachers, so a new
understanding and treatment for these conditions is urgently need-
ed.
Plexus Bio-Energy under the guidance of Tom Griffin and Michael
O’Doherty have begun to address this need in a very effective way
with a non-drug approach. This approach based on the Dawson
Programme coupled with working in the field of Bio-energy
equips these people with the understanding of how these condi-
tions can be treated.
Dyslexia is defined as a learning disorder marked by the impair-
ment of the ability to recognise and comprehend written words,
causing great frustration and emotional stress for the child, parents
and teachers. Dyslexia is an eyesight problem, and has no relation-
ship to the basic intelligence of an individual.
The correction of these symptoms is achieved by addressing the
underlying physical and emotional electrophysical malfunctions’,
through leading edge techniques provide within the clinic.

Launch of Ardmore Development Plan

The Ardmore Tidy Towns Development Plan was launched on
Saturday September 1st by Batt O’Keeffe, T.D, Minister of State
for Housing, Urban Renewal and Developing Areas.
Ardmore Tidy Towns Association, from its own fund-raising
efforts, commissioned the preparation of the Development Plan in
order to take a more proactive approach to influencing develop-
ment within the village.
The launch event was attended by the Mayor of County Waterford,
Billy Kyne, Senator Paudie Coffey, Councillors Thomas Cronin
and Pat Nugent, local residents, community groups, businesses
and visitors to the area.
The Minister commended the initiative shown by Ardmore Tidy
Towns Association in commissioning the plan. He praised
Ardmore’s superb amenities and immense cultural heritage and
suggested the outstanding community spirit shown by Ardmore
can be an inspiration for other areas throughout the country. Ardmore Tidy Towns Committee and Invited Guests pictured at the Launch of the

ised to organise a working meeting with Ardmore Tidy Towns to
facilitate this.
The Plan was written by Lisa M. J. Dolan of Ecological Landscape
Design Consultants (ELDC) and a native of Ardmore.
Lisa carried out a baseline survey of the geography, cultural her-
itage, ecology, socio-demographics and infrastructural and recre-
ational requirements of the Village.
Lisa also formulated a questionnaire survey, which was circulated
in August 2006. The survey provided valuable data to assist in
identifying infrastructural deficits within the Village, and suitable
locations for the provision of new infrastructure.
The survey highlighted the fact that the lack of a ’Blue Flag’ status
and the need for the immediate installation of a wastewater treat-
ment plant remains one of the major infrastructural requirements
for the Village.
Minister Batt O’Keeffe announced that a new site for the
Wastewater Treatment Plant had been obtained. Planning permis-
sion for this site has been granted and contracts were in the Batt O Keeffe TD Minister of State at the Department of the Environment pictured
process of being signed to procure the site. The treatment plant with three generations of the Gleeson Family, Liam, his son Brian and Grandson
will not be operational until 2010 due to the tendering process and John.
the delays being experienced in obtaining a foreshore licence from
the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural
Resources. Mayor Kyne offered to facilitate meetings between
officials from Waterford County Council and the Department of
the Marine in order to fast-track the granting of this foreshore
licence.
In the interim period, a preliminary treatment facility is to be
installed to remove solids from the current discharge to Ardmore
Bay. This is due to be operational by September 2008.
The Plan provides guidance on individual features of buildings
which can improve the overall environmental aesthetics of the
Village’s Streetscapes e.g. well-maintained buildings and associat-
ed infrastructure such as doors, windows, footpaths, gardens,
walls or fences, regularly maintained lawns etc.
The Plan has identified an Open Space Strategy for the Village,
which has envisaged the future landscape design layout, including
a Village square and includes the establishment of an urban plaza, Elma O Mahony, Ita Scott and Paddy Carlton.
park or woodland. The Open Space Strategy aims to provide for
the recreational and amenity facility requirements of the Village.
The Plan has also identified sites within the Village which can
facilitate the establishment of landscaped areas and provided
planting recommendations for suitable trees and shrubs to
improve the wildlife function of the planted areas.
The Plan highlights the importance of retaining the native semi-
natural habitats within the Village, namely the wetland at
Farrangarret and its water supply, stretches of linear and riparian
woodland and hedgerows within the Village.
The plan can be downloaded from www.ardmoretidytowns.ie.
Ardmore Tidy Towns requests that all those interested in submit-
ting observations or comments on the Development Plan, do so by
the 30th September, 2007.
Comments can be forwarded to Lisa M. J. Dolan, Ecological

such as Sir Walter Raleigh. Oliver Cromwell spent a considerable
time in the Ardmore and Youghal areas.
James showed numerous pictures of the considerable maritime

that is Thai Cottage Kinsale and precedes a second franchise in
Bantry, due to open in October. Meanwhile, Clonmel is "being
looked at", according to Niamh.
Niamh is the 28 year-old daughter of the late Mick Parker.
Following her education at Loretto Convent, Youghal, she left for
England, where she acquired a HDip in Sports Science and
Nutrition. A woman whose inspiration can be as unconventional as
it is tireless, she then brought her qualifications to the Mayo
Senior football team (she seems attracted to remote regions!). "I
did my best to keep them off breakfast rolls’, she recalls.
At 22 she opened her first business, a weight management pro-
gramme in Castlebar. Her subsequent journey to the table of Thai
food was, quite literally by accident. At 24, injuries sustained in a
car crash ended her Mayo salad days. It was a heavy blow for a

On recuperation, she returned to Britain and renewed a friendship
with Thai restaurant owner Pee Deang, for whom she had worked
to finance her studies. In 2003, the two ladies opened Thai Cottage
Kinsale. Eight months later, Niamh bought out the business before
expanding into thriving outside catering and take-away services,
which the franchises can replicate. More recently, Thai cottage
cookery courses in have also been incorporated.
Word of mouth built Thai Cottage’s reputation and it now trades as
a brand, a business and a concept. The buzzword is "authentic’ and

Trade secrets are the lighter of her subsequent imports. Taking
Youghal as a precedent, Thai Cottage employs Thai staff, as the
original ’family’ of core workers in Kinsale now spread forth, to be
replaced by compatriot recruits. Every accruement, from bowls to
bamboos and curtains to chairs, is imported from Thailand to be
integrated according to the plan of an interior designer who has
also been dispatched to Thailand to look and learn. This extends

the years and with the well organised under-age system that is
already in place the future is bright and I am confident that many
young Lady Golfers will do the club and all of its members proud in
the years to come.
On a recent visit to Youghal Golf Club to meet up with some of the
Lady members to get the views on the changing face golf from their
point of view.
Deirdre, Mary, Denise, Betty, Frankie, Eileen, Amanda and Jane
spoke to me on the evening and spoke about the changes in the game
and how its has effected their lives from a personal level and how
being a member of Youghal Golf Club has enhanced their lives.
The Lady Captain of Youghal Golf Club Deirdre O’Brien got the ball
rolling, " I was invited up to join a quiz team during the winter so it
was quite by accident that I got to play golf, and one of the Lady
members asked me if I would give golf a try and I agreed to give it a
go and at the time I didn’t know too many people in Youghal and golf
gave me a lot of pleasure to play and it helped me meet more people
from a social aspect". Deirdre added " Being the local doctor was
tough enough at the start, but golf and being a member of Youghal
Golf Club was definitely an ice breaker and meeting members in the
surgery or in the club became so much easier because I was involved
in Youghal Golf Club, it has been a great experience".
Mary Murphy a very well known hotel owner in the Youghal area for
many years worked hard all her life and finally when her husband
Edmund and herself decided to leave the Walter Raleigh Hotel, Mary
had more time on her hands than ever and she filled many of those
vacant hours on the golf course "I bought a set of clubs about twen-
ty years ago, but I never had time to play, but in the last two years
since leaving the Walter Raleigh I play a lot more golf as often as I Youghal Golf Club s renowned restaurant

it can be competitive or social its up to yourself, but it’s a great game
and I love it".
Denise Fitzgerald is the current Secretary of Youghal Golf Club and
comes from a family that are imbedded in local sport and local activ-

Long time business lady in Youghal Eileen Farrell has no doubt about
the reasons for the increase in the ladies game in Youghal " We put

a sad bereavement when her late husband passed away recently and
during that sad time in her life she felt some comfort and solace from
her friends at Youghal Golf Club, " Its been fantastic for me really, I Takeaway & Delivery Service

and with that sporting background it was only natural that their twin Best of Luck to Youghal Golf Club from

Youghal Lifeboat Assists

Two Motor Cruisers
A busy summer season has continued for the Youghal Lifeboat
through August as during the past couple of weeks the voluntary
crews have responded to two more callouts to bring the total to ten
callouts since June.
The first of the latest two callouts occurred on 6th August when a
local speedboat suffered engine failure near Ballinaclash Quay
approximately 6 miles upriver on the River Blackwater. The
lifeboat was launched at 18.40 Hrs and reached the casualty at
19.00 Hrs. Lifeboat crew member Jason Ansbro went aboard the
casualty to assist the two people with the tow. During the return
journey to Youghal, the speedboats owner managed to restart the
engine and so the vessel was able to make its way back to Youghal
Harbour under its own steam, escorted by the Lifeboat. The
Lifeboat returned to station at 19.30 Hrs. Helmsman Michael
Brooks was in command of the lifeboat for this service and Jason
Ansbro and Thomas Cliffe assisted as crew.
On Sunday 19th August at 12.55 Hrs while the lifeboat Patricia
Jennings was at sea on exercise, ’the crew received a call from the
Coastguard that a local motorised pleasure craft had suffered Anthony Pardy (Youghal) and Maura Keneally (Newcastle West) who were mar-
engine failure in Youghal Bay. There were two persons onboard ried recently in St. Mary s Parish Church, Youghal. The reception was held in The

Hurling Club from Gortroe aim to become county
champions when they take on Castlemagner from north
Cork in the final of Junior B County Championship at
Pairc Ui Rinn.
On May 17th a major fundraiser was hosted by Youghal
John Keniry
Golf Club as St.Ita’s held their golf classic there. It was AGRICULTURAL
launched at Gazebo’s Restaurant and a great time was
had by all both on and off the golf course as a long day CONTRACTOR
became a very long night. Congratulations to
Blackwater Homes on winning the classic.
Then it was time to put away the golf clubs and get Best Wishes to St. Ita s in the Final
back to business as usual - on the pitch under the from
watchful eyes of selectors: Ger Coleman, Sean
Harnedy and Michael Griffin. They went to
Castlemartyr to play Ballinacurra, after a tightly con- C.G.
tested first half, St.Ita’s won by 4-13 to 0-12. Next it MOTHERWAY
was Lisgoold in the East Cork Final in Killeagh. The & Co.
game finished St. Ita’s 2-15, Lisgoold 3-12. Whatever CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS
John Boylan(coach) said in the dressing room before
the replay seemed to work as they went on to win by 2-
11 to 0-13. 9 Tallow Street, Youghal, Co. Cork.
Then it was off to Brinny and the home of Valley Tel (024) 93450 Fax (024) 93049
Rovers to play Gabriel Rangers in the quarter final
where they ran out easy winners with a scoreline of 5-
11 to 3-8. In the semi final they met Belgooly in Best Wishes to St. Ita s in the Final
Caherlag and remained on course by defeating
Belgooly by a 7pt margin, 2-12 to 1-8. from
But lets not forget that a winning team has a good back-
room staff with members such as Jimmy Healy
(physio) working overtime to cure all the aches and
pains, and Jim Griffin who keeps the pitch in Pilmore
in excellent condition and who is always ready and able
Clonpriest
to mend the hurleys when needed. (No rest Jim).

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS
PROBLEMS AT CLAYCASTLE
Photo Michael Hussey

By Christy Parker
Youghal Town Councillor Michael Beecher has labelled the town’s
seaside public toilets "a disgrace" and "unfit for human usage."
The FG councillor says the toilets at Claycastle "urgently need
upgrading, including wheelchair accessibility" before next sum-
