MECHANICAL MEASUREMENTS AND METROLOGY

ASSIGNMENT – 01

To be submitted before 3rd April 2020

1. Determine the tolerance on hole and shaft for a fit of 30 H8 d10 and sketch the fit, given

the following data :

a. Diameter 30 falls in the diameter range of 18-30, upper deviation for “d” shaft is -

16D0.44

b. i = 0.45(D) 1/3 + 0.001D.

c. tolerance for IT8 = 25i

d. tolerance IT10 = 64i

2. Determine the type of fit after deciding the fundamental deviations and tolerances in the

following fit 70H9e7

a. Diameter step 50-80, fundamental deviation for “e” shaft is -11(D) 0.41

b. IT7 = 16i

c. IT9 = 40i

d. i= 0.45(D)1/3+ 0.001D

3. Calculate the relevant dimensions of 35H7f8, dimension 35 falls in the step of 30-50mm.

Fundamental deviation for “f” shaft is -5.5D0.41

a. i= 0.45(D)1/3+ 0.001 D

b. IT7 = 16i

c. IT8 = 25i
4. What is meant by geometric tolerance? Explain the following :

a. Straightness

b. Flatness

c. Roundness

d. Cylindricity

e. Parallelism

f. Squareness

g. Angularity

h. Concentricity

5. Explain the concept of positional tolerance

6. Explain the various materials used for the gauges

7. Four length bars A, B, C and D each having a basic length of 125mm are to be calibrated

using a calibrated length bar of 500mm basic length. The 500mm bar has an actual length

of 499.9991mm. Also, it is found that

a. LB = LA + 0.0001 mm

b. LC = LA + 0.0005 mm

c. LD = LA – 0.0002 mm

d. LA+LB+LC+LD = L + 0.0003 mm

Determine LA, LB, LC, LD

8. Three 100 mm end bars are measured on a level comparator by first wringing them

together and comparing with a 300 mm bar. The 300 mm bar has known error of +40

microns and the three bars together measure 64 microns less than the 300 mm bar. Bar A

is 18 microns longer than bar B and 23 microns longer than bar C.

Find the actual length of each bar.

9. Describe with a neat sketch Imperial standard yard and international prototype meter

10. Explain the role of standards and briefly explain the various standards

11. Explain the principle and working of autocollimator with a neat sketch

12. Explain Clearance fit, interference fit and transition fit with a neat sketch

13. Distinguish between hole basis system and shaft basis system with a neat sketch. Justify

which system is preferred.

14. Build the following dimensions using M-87 set of slip gauges (i) 49.3825 mm (ii)

87.3215 mm

15. Build up a length of 35.4875 mm using M112 set. Use two protector slips of 2.5 mm each
