Catalog Statement

The fundamentals of drawing for the visual arts

Course Objectives

This course offers the student the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of drawing
though a structured series of assignments of ever increasing complexity. Students
will be introduced to charcoal and graphite, traditional dry media capable of great
subtlety and expression.

Content Outline

Students will be introduced to the five components of observational drawing.

Line – the perception of edges

Shape – the perception of spaces

Sight measuring – the perception of relationships

Value – the perception of lights and shadows

Composition – the perception of the whole

Course Requirements

This course has no prerequisites. It is designed for both the beginning draftsman and
the experienced amateur who wishes to have a thorough grounding in traditional
academic drawing. It is also one of the five required foundation courses for all art
majors. Therefore expectations are high. It is the first step for serious students who
wish to pursue further study in graphic design and the fine arts. It is also an end in
itself for non-majors who wish to have a serious introduction to the basics of freehand
drawing.

Materials

All materials required for this class are available at the APSU bookstore. See attached
list.

Procedures

Most class sessions begin with a brief overview or presentation followed by a short
lecture/demonstration. The majority of class time is devoted to drawing. Some
extended projects will be followed by a group critique.
Attendance

This is a participatory class therefore, regular attendance is essential. The student

may miss three classes over the course of the semester without excuse. After
three absences the final grade is lowered one letter for each additional
absence. Attendance is taken at the beginning of class. If you are not present
when roll is called it is your responsibility to notify me of your arrival during break. A
late arrival is considered half an absence. Leaving early is equal to a late arrival.

Grading

Grades are based on the drawings in the mid-term and final portfolios and on the
student’s participation throughout the semester. Each grade will reflect the student’s
mastery of representation, composition and technique.

A competent drawing is considered average. Excellent work is that which is of the

highest quality in all of the above criteria.

Attending all classes, completing all assignments and meeting all deadlines does not
guarantee the student an A. In fact, that is expected of everyone and is therefore
considered average.

Letter grades will be given for each drawing in the mid-term and final portfolios.
Before each deadline, a specified list of drawings will be provided by the instructor.

A mid-term grade will be assigned for all students in this course. This grade may not
necessarily be based on 50% of the course requirements and may or may not differ
from the final grade. Mid-term grades will be posted on the AP Web.

It is your responsibility to take care of your work.

Breakdown of grades

A The student attends all classes, completes all assignments and demonstrates
exceptional ability and
understanding of drawing. The work is excellent; outstanding in every aspect.

B The student attends all classes, completes all assignments and demonstrates
mastery over the basics of
drawing.

C The student attends all classes and completes all assignments.

D Unsatisfactory or poor work.

F Failure to complete requirements.

Late Work

Late work is to be avoided. Drawings are due at the beginning of class on the date
specified. Late work is not accepted.

In-class Drawing

Most of our time will be spent drawing the still life. Technical demonstrations and
lectures will be given when necessary. College drawing classes are different from
high school art classes in that this is a time for concentrated work, not socializing.
Please respect the serious but not solemn work-like atmosphere of the studio.
Therefore please refrain from chatting during the drawing sessions since drawing
requires total concentration. Anyone who violates this simple request will be asked
to leave.

Outside Drawing

Students are required to complete numerous outside assignments over the course of
the semester. Drawings are due at the beginning of class on the specified date.

As the semester progresses, students should plan on allotting three to six hours per
week outside of class for the completion of all work.

Additional Policies

Please turn off cell phones.

Please do not wear your iPod or any other personal music device except when
specifically allowed while working on long projects. During these times please keep
the volume at a low level to avoid headphone leakage.

The student is responsible for all materials. Students who are unprepared will be
considered absent.
