It all begins and ends with carbon.

“Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust.” You might as well just say “Carbon” because our

whole living system on planet Earth relies on it. It’s at the center.

Bacteria that consume carbon are basis of what we call decay, rotting, composting

or decomposition.

Above bacteria are the micro-world of fungi, tiny spores and threads that work with

plant roots in the soil to make nutrients for the plants.

Then there are the living creatures, arthropods, which start with nearly invisible mites,

nematodes, worms and insects. There are many dozens of species found in the soil,

each with its own job to do. They are huge compared to bacteria but you still have to

look closely to see them.

This invisible food web is the basis of a strong and healthy growing system, whether

an organic garden or an aquaponics system.
