B. Microprocessor
(1) The microprocessor (IC35) is a Motorola type MC68000 which operates at a clock fre-
quency of 11.059 MHz from a quartz oscillator. Refer to FIGURE 4 for the block dia-
gram of the microprocessor.
(2) The microprocessor scans the PIM keyboard at intervals set by the software. If an acti-
vated key is detected the related ARINC data word is transmitted.
(3) ARINC data is received serially through the ARINC data bus and is decoded by the mi-
croprocessor. One of the two ARINC input channels is set as the active input source.
Normally input channel number one is active. If no valid data is received from this
channel; channel number two is set as the input source.
(4) If there is no valid ARINC data on both input channels, a “CIDS CAUTION” flag is
transmitted to the PIM. The microprocessor switches between the ARINC input chan-
nels at set intervals until valid data is received through one input channel.
C. Graphic Controller
The graphic controller reads data received through the data bus from the microprocessor. The
data is compared with the data stored in the graphic memory. If the data is correct, the data is
sent from the graphic memory to the display.
D. ARINC Data Bus Interface
(1) The ARINC 429 data bus interface has two high speed receiver channels and one high
speed transmitter channel. Only one receiver channel is active at a time. The software
controls channel selection. The ARINC interface does the signal conversion between
the ARINC and the TTL-levels and an ARINC-UART. The software does the data bus
protocol handling.
(2) The FAP has two identical ARINC receiver channels. For each channel the differential
ARINC input signal is changed by the dual line receiver to a ground related signal. This
dual line receiver gives an output level which is independent of the permitted ARINC
input level tolerances.
(3) The differential ARINC signal is decoded for the high-bit and low-bit-detection. Refer to
FIGURE 5 for the ARINC data bus interface timing diagram.
(4) The ARINC transmitter-signal conversion logic receives two signals from the ARINC-
UART. One signal is active for the high-bit transmission and the other signal is active
for the low-bit transmission. An ARINC line driver changes these signals to a single sig-
nal, which is a high state with a positive output level and a low state with a negative
output level and return to zero. Refer to FIGURE 6 for the ARINC transmitter-signal
conversion-logic timing diagram.

E. Memory
(1) The FAP has the following memory devices:
– 2 x 128 Kbyte program memory (CMOS-EPROM)
– 2 x 32 Kbyte (EEPROM)
– 2 x 32 Kbyte data memory (RAM)
– 4 x 32 Kbyte graphic memory (RAM)
(2) Two CMOS-EPROM, type 27C010 each 128 Kbyte, are used as program memory. Da-
ta from this EPROM is read at each microprocessor phase.
F. Watch Dog Timer
A watch dog timer is used to control the microprocessor. During normal operation, the micro-
processor triggers the timer at regular intervals. If the trigger signal is interrupted, the watch
dog timer generates a microprocessor interrupt. For this function a retriggerable IC (IC39) type
DS1232, is installed.

NOTE: Refer to FIGURE 7 for the watch dog timer block diagram.

G. Keyboards and Associated Microprocessor Interfaces
(1) The foil switch keyboards are used to operate the FAP. All the keys are connected in a
matrix of rows and columns. When a key is pressed the related column and row are
connected.
(2) The microprocessor has an interface for scanning and decoding the keyboard matrix.
The interface has an address decoder for column selection and bus drivers for row da-
ta input. To decode the keyboard state, the microprocessor executes memory read in-
structions. The memory address for each read instruction is decoded and the related
keyboard matrix column is selected to be read (low level). The state of the microproc-
essor data bus at the time of the read instruction is related to the state of each key po-
sition in the selected column (a low signal for each activated key).
H. Power Supply
(1) The FAP is supplied from a 28 V DC bus. From this supply a DC/DC converter gener-
ates the internal voltage levels of +5 V, +15 V and -15 V.
(2) A second DC/DC converter is used to generate a second positive supply level. This
DC/DC converter is also supplied with 28 V DC. The output level is +12 V DC which is
the supply voltage for the LCD backlight. A negative supply of -20 V DC is used to de-
energize the LCD.
(3) Three comparators are used to test the voltage levels. The comparators generate a
logical high signal when the +15 V, -15 V and the +12 V voltage levels are correct or a
low signal if the voltage levels are incorrect. The logic signals are read by the micro-
processor.
