1. Explain the stress - strain relations for plane stress, plane strain and axi-symmetric stress conditions.
2. Derive the stiffness matrix and nodal load vectors for a 2- nodal I-D line element.
3. Analyse the beam shown in figure by finite element method and determine the end reactions. Also
determine the deflections at mid span given E = 2 × 105 N/mm2 and I = 5 × 106 mm4 .
4. Derive the shape functions and strain displacement matrix for a CST element.

5. Evaluate numerically 2∫ N T N dξ for the Quadratic bar element.
−1 ¡ ¢
The shape functions are N1 = 21 (ξ − 1) ξ, N2 = − ξ 1 − 1 N3 = 12 (ξ + 1) ξ.
6. Determine the nodal displacements and element stresses of a cylinder fixed at one end as shown in figure.
The internal pressure is 2 Mpa. Take E=210 Gpa and γ=0.3
7. For the two dimensional body shown in figure, determine the temperature distribution. The edges on
the top and bottom of the body are insulated. Assume Kx=Ky. Use three element model.
