Barnes explores managerial skills as one which is most significant and
assists thoughts and ideas to acquire admiration. Business have
became so competitive and pure professional in present era where there
is need for talented and skilful managers which can run business
successfully thereby increasing sales and meeting requirements of
employees.

This study will enable us providing better understand of various skills

and qualities required by mangers which will help to grow and sustain
business in long run.

Task1:

Identify and evaluate the importance of the personal and professional

skills, outlined above, for a successful manager, which enable the
manager to meet organizational and own goals.

To be an unbeaten, triumphant and successful manager in present

economy where there is cut-throat competition, managers must have
superior potential as compared to others. Competition has become so
high which leads to excessive rivalry among competitors who fall under
same product lines. Pfeffer (1998) recognized seven key methods
related with professional and managerial efficacy: “ensure employment
security, selectively hire people, foster decentralization and self-
managing teams, institute high levels of pay based on performance, train
extensively, reduce status differences and share information”. There are
various qualities and skills required by managers to be successful in
present era and they are discussed below as follows:

Personal Skills:

 A successful manager should always be committed on its goals

and should always remember vision and values of the company.
 A successful manager should be able to handle all the tasks
effectively when things come all together at one time.
 Should always be disciplined and must possess exceptional
planning and management ability.
 Should always have a positive approach and “CAN DO” attitude.
 Should always be confident and believe in team spirit and one
team.
 Should be a good listener as a person who is good listener avoids
chaos an organization and helps things to go smoothly.
 Should be able to build good and healthy relations with clients
which will prove very beneficial for long term prospects.
 Should always treat everyone equal and should not be partial at
any time. The main concern should always be work of person
neither its ethnic origin.
 Should be able to evaluate things, take initiative and work
accordingly.
(Christee Gabour, 2008, Jack H. Grossman at. el, 2001).

Professional skills:

 Demonstrates Integrity: Manager should always set an example to

others which will help them to move ahead towards success.
 In present fast moving world, manager must be able to use
effective time management skills.
 Should always be reliable and be able to deal things honestly and
diplomatically.
 Should always be good negotiator which will help him in long run
and future prospects.

workers.
(Hayley Solich).
Importance of personal and professional skills:

According to John Baldwin, “Good managers are the best entrepreneurs

who have tried and failed during the learning process of the economy of
taking risk, but it’s not mandatory to accept the failure rate.”

Good managers do not take policy decision (He Wrapp). The

professional and personal skills discussed above are very important for
success of any organization. These skills are the basic lines for
becoming a successful manager. Along with these skills, a manager
must also possess conceptual, communication, effectiveness and
interpersonal skills. These skills are also very vital as it reflects actual
performance.

There are various surveys which are being conducted to take opinions of
employees in which they are asked about skills and quality which they
want in their manager. There were survey conducted in US and Canada
in which most employees supported soft skills as they think these are
lacking in present world of globalisation. Personal and Professional skills
play major role in success of every organization and are very useful for
achieving realistic goals.

TASK 2:

Provide a range of practical methods suitable for developing or

improving the skills.

The Institute for defining professional development explains that

professional development is 'The systematic maintenance, improvement
and broadening of knowledge and the development of personal qualities
necessary for the education of professional and technical duties
throughout the practitioner's working life.' (Institute for Continuing Professional
development .www.trainingzone.co.uk/icpd). Professional development is not a
product which can be purchased and skills can be developed. It is a skill
set of activities what we get hold of. It is not compulsory that all
managers are born with all personal and professional skills. Some of
them have the ability and potential but are not able to use those skills
effectively on professional background.

David Allred Whetten, Kim S. Cameron (1991) have written book on

developing management skills. It focuses on efficient skills required by
persona to become successful managers. Some of key skills are
discussed below:

 Observational Learning: This plays a vital role in success of a

manager to achieve societal objectives. In this, observer learns
things by observing others. It is also known as social learning
theory. Managers should always learn things observing others.

 Survey and Keep an Eye: Managers should always walk around

store so that he can be aware about what is happening. Manager
should not sit in the office. This will help in sharing share of ideas
and opinions with employees which will further help to improve
interpersonal skills playing a key role in decision making.

 Handle Situations Tactfully: Managers should be able to solve

disputes among staff, employees or customers. It is very important
for success of an organization as disputes creates wrong
impression in minds of customers and firm may lose its goodwill.

 Good Listener: Listening skills is one of core managerial skill

which a manager should accomplish. Managers should always be
good listener. Being good listener always helps to avoid
pandemonium. Managers should always pay attention to what
BOD says and should follow instructions attentively.

 Always have an Advisor and Seminars: Getting a useful advice

is very helpful and beneficial for achievement. Mentor advice is
always useful but manager should be self determined and self
aimed towards achieving goals. This will help in building long term
business prospects. Timely seminars should be conducted which
will prove very useful to solve issues faced by staff, employees etc.
It will internally improve communication skills.
TASK5:

Provide evidence of the monitoring and feedback undertaken where

relevant and any adjustments made to the plan so that a more
successful outcome could be achieved.

Monitoring of plan may be done by general observation of a plan or by

statistics using data collection analysis (Midewin Land). There are three
steps in monitoring of a plan viz., Implementation monitoring,
Effectiveness monitoring, Validation Monitoring. Evaluation of plan helps
it easy to understand rather than making it more complex. There are
certain procedures and steps which should be followed for evaluating
and getting feedback. They are discussed below as follows:

 Review of Plan: Plan should be properly scrutinize and should be

reviewed every weekly or monthly to avoid complications. It helps
in better understanding core sets of actions which are supposed to
be commencing and helps in random examination.
 Positive attitude: Effective steps should be taken in advance for
future success and should always have a back up if things go
incorrect. All people in organization should be aware of company’s
vision and values which are very important in achieving long term
goals.
 Exhibit sensitivity of performance: Examination of aims and
objectives based on inspection and observation. This can more
useful if previous research and task has been done undertaking
the combination of personal and professional skills.
 Feedback of seminars and training: Routine feedback of
seminars and training during preliminary period is very important
as it helps to measure the performance of an individual. Feedback
from seminars helps to modify changes and catches interest of
individuals. It assists in obtaining solution and results.

These steps can help to avoid complexity and can encourage the
morale of employees in an organization and can operate as an
appropriate device for building healthy relations among organization.
It is not obligatory to follow same plan always. Sometimes there may
be urgency, under this situation back up plan or new plan should be
implemented.
