Section B

Answer all questions in this section_

Question 10 has a choice of parts to answer.

9 The Senoko power station in Singapore contains a Combined Cycle Plant to

generate electricity. Natural gas is burnt in a combustion chamber and the hot
gases produced are used to drive' four gas turbines connected to electrical
generators.

The exhaust gases from' the' four gas turbines are passed through a Heat Re~overy
Steam Generator, which thermal energy is used to produce steam at high pressure.
Each second, 76 kg of steam is output from the Heat Recovery Steam Generator.

The steam is passed into two steam turbines which are also connected to electricaJ
generators.

The multi-stage process ensures that 46% of the total energy in the natural gas is
converted into eJectrical energy. When the Heat Recovery Steam Generator and
steam turbines are used, the total electrical output of the plant increases without
burning more natural 9as- '

Details of the gas and steam turbines are given and a simplified diagram of the
Heat Recovery Steam Generator is shown in Fig. 9.1.

Section B

Qlai The body~s speed must be increasing at the same rate every second, and when
reflected on the velocity-time graph~ a straight ~ine with a slope is shown.

Q3 b There are no physical limitations during the meaSuring. LIG thermometer may
run out of range, however, the thermocouple will definitely have a larger range
than LIG thermometers, just as long as we know the calibrating factor.

The spheres are momentarily attracted the positively c~ged strip.. Within the
ballss there is charge separatiQn whereby the negative cluirges will be on the-side
doserto the strip, with the positive charges on the opposite side. There is a slight
separation between: the balls as like charges (negative) repel.

The momentaIy contact allowed the

negative charges to cross ov~r to the strip, to
neutralize some positive charges. Whatever remains on the balls are only posi~e

The gradient of the graph will give the resistance.

Error: Leaving the circuit closed wilen not-taking experimental values will heat up
the components~ resulting in inaccurate readings taken.

c As the current flows through the metal

filamen~ it gets hotter and s~ its resistance
increases, reducing the gradient of the graph
as sho'\VIl.
