and graduate students interested in a career in
healthcare to apply for a unique Emergency
Department (ED) internship experience. This
non-paying internship will allow students to
learn about:

 Managing patient flow in an ED


 Customer service in a healthcare environment
 Data collection and analysis
 Healthcare disparities and multi-cultural health
issues

Emergency Department Ambassador Program
Program Description

The Durham Regional Hospital Emergency Department Ambassador


Program is a non-paying internship experience for undergraduate
and graduate students interested in learning in a fast-paced
healthcare environment.

Ambassador Program Interns will be responsible for:

Customer Service
 Serving as the face of Durham Regional for Emergency Department Patients
 Addressing complaints , questions and patient issues
 Assisting with transportation and other services
 Conducting customer service rounds
 Proactively meeting patient needs
 Patient satisfaction survey data collection and analysis
 Improving patient satisfaction survey scores and increasing survey response
rates

Quality
 Monitoring deterioration in condition
 Maintaining ED waiting room
 Assisting the charge nurse in managing patient flow
 Escorting/transporting patients

Work Culture
 Develop relationships with ED staff
 Foster a team environment
Emergency Department Ambassador Program
Internship Requirements

Ambassador Interns must be:


 Ambassador Interns must be available to attend one of the
scheduled training sessions on Jan 26 or 27 (5p to 8:30p)
 Proactive and customer service oriented

 Able to commit 4 hours per week for a semester, hours to be


completed Mon, Tues or Weds between 11AM to 3PM
 Comfortable interacting with different types of patients

 Able to dress professionally and appropriately for healthcare


environment
 Able to adhere to the rules and regulations of Durham Regional
Hospital
 Able to conduct themselves in a professional manner

 Able to push a wheelchair

 Comfortable in stressful healthcare environment

 Comfortable with the sight of blood or other body fluids

 Able to be on feet for extend periods of time

 Committed to a safe work environment

 Committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive and diverse


work environment
 Able to fulfill confidentiality requirements

 Able to work on a team

Perioperative Services Ambassador Program
Program Description

The Durham Regional Hospital Perioperative Department Ambassador


Program is a non-paying internship experience for undergraduate
and graduate students interested in learning in a fast-paced
healthcare environment.
Ambassador Program Interns will be responsible for:

Customer Service
 Serving as the face of Durham Regional for Perioperative Department Patients
 Addressing complaints , questions and patient issues
 Conducting customer service rounds
 Proactively meeting patient /family needs
 Patient satisfaction survey data collection and analysis
 Improving patient satisfaction survey scores and increasing survey response
rates

Quality
 Rounding on waiting rooms
 Escorts families to PACU, ACU, or nursing units as appropriate

Work Culture
 Develop relationships with Perioperative staff
 Foster a team environment
 Collaborate with Perioperative Coordinator and department charge nurses to
communicate patient flow changes (ie delays, etc).
 Available to Perioperative staff to intervene in special circumstances.
Perioperative Department Ambassador Program
Internship Requirements

scheduled training sessions on Jan 26 or 27 (5p to 8:30p)
