SECTION 081113- HOLLOW METAL DOORS AND FRAMES

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1. Standard hollow metal doors.


2. Custom hollow metal doors.

B. Related Sections:

1. Division 04 Section "Unit Masonry" for embedding anchors for hollow metal work
into masonry construction.
2. Division 08 Section “Door Hardware” for door hardware for hollow metal doors.
3. Division 16 Sections for electrical connections including conduit and wiring for
door controls and operators.

1.3 CODES/STANDARDS:

A. All works to be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Local Authority,
the Health and Safety Authority, the relevant Building Regulations.

B. Materials:
Comply with the following standards-
a. BS 1245, Specification for metal doorframe.
b. BS1449, Part 1, Specification for carbon and carbon manganese plate, sheet and
strip.
c. BS729, Specification for hot-dip galvanized coatings on iron and steel articles.

except where more stringent requirements are called for in the specifications or noted on
the drawings.

Fire Resistance:
a. Door assemblies specified to be fire resisting in the door schedule as FD30, FD60
and FD120 to meet the required performance for fire resistance for the designated period
of 30, 60 and 120 minutes respectively.
b. The specified performance is to be the minimum period attained when tested for
integrity in accordance with BS 476, Part 22; methods for determination of fire resistance
of non-load bearing elements of construction.
c. Copy test reports from an independent testing authority or authority written
assessment to be provided for every different door assembly specification, i.e. for each
different core type, leaf size, opening arrangement, ironmongery, glazed aperture, frame

and installation. Reports must show that tests were carried out on a complete door
assembly in the type of wall specified and must include full technical and dimensional
details of the test specimen including door construction, frame, ironmongery, glazing and
intumescent seals. Supply sample of metal door panel, methods of construction,
ironmongery preparation and any other specifics required to obtain fire-resistant rating.

Smoke Control:
Smoke control doors, designated on the door schedule are to satisfy the smoke leakage
rates of BS5588.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s catalogue cuts including data


substantiating that products comply with requirements of the Specifications.

B. Shop Drawings: Provide schedule of doors and frames using same reference numbers
for details and openings as those used on drawings. Submit shop drawings for metal
work. Include details of each frame type, elevations of doors and frames, door handing,
conditions of openings, details of construction, location and installation requirement of
ironmongery and reinforcements, and details of joints and connections. Show
anchorage and accessory items.

C. Site dimensions must be taken and recorded on shop drawings before starting to make
doors, door and window frames.

D. Samples: After finalization of all details, submit quarter sized door and frame corner
sample with hinge and lockset mounting, as part of the quantity required for the project
prior to fabrication, for approval by Architect before proceeding with manufacture of the
remaining quantity.

E. Manufacturing: Facility to be open to Architect’s inspection of work in progress.

F. Submit a full size finished sample of a door from one of the listed companies listed
within this specification for the architects to make a visual comparison with any
proposed alternatives.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. The Architect shall be the sole and final arbiter of quality. All workmanship and
materials to be top quality and free from defects. All defective work shall be rejected.

B. Submit manufacturer’s warranties that the materials will perform as specified. The
manufacturer must have the manufacturing and delivery capacity required for the project
and shall be ISO 9002 certified.

1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Carefully pack, handle and transport all materials and accessories in stout cardboard
cartons with protection to edges and corners on pallets or in heavy cartons. Unload and
handle with care to prevent distortion or damage to finishes.

B. Deliver all materials to site in manufacturer’s original and unopened containers and
packaging, with clear labeling as to type and name of products and manufacturer’s for
identification on site.

C. On delivery components to be placed immediately in dry, floored and covered storage


areas. Stack on bearers separated by spacers to prevent damage to finishes and
ironmongery. Store under suitable protective covering to keep finished components dry
and free from damage.

D. Store and handle in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions to avoid damage or


warping to doors and frames.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS

c. Or equivalent approved by the Architect

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Shop Applied Paint (primed and painted): Polyester Powder Coat.

2.3 GENERAL FABRICATION

A. Fabricate metal units to be rigid, neat in appearance and free from defects, warp or
buckle. Wherever practical, fit and assemble units in manufacturer’s plant.

B. Fabricate exposed faces of doors from cold-rolled steel. Face sheets shall be one
piece.

C. Fabricate frames, concealed stiffeners, reinforcement and edge channels from either
cold-rolled or hot-rolled steel, (at fabricators option). Sizes, types and shapes of frames
shall be furnished as detailed.

D. Fabricate doors and door frames from galvanized sheet steel. Close top and bottom
edges of exterior doors as integral part of door construction.

E. Exposed Fasteners: Unless otherwise indicated, provide concealed fixings.

F. Thermal-rated (Insulating) Assemblies: Exterior doors shall be fabricated as thermal


insulating assemblies with insulating core type material.

G. Insulation to doors and frames: Provide expandable cavity insulation to door frames and
doors.

H. Ironmongery Preparation:

a. Prepare metal work to receive mortised and concealed ironmongery in


accordance with final ironmongery schedule and templates provided by
hardware supplier. Provide 4mm steel mortar boxes welded to frames at
back of finish hardware cut-outs for frames to be set in concrete masonry
walls.

a. Reinforce metal work to receive surface-applied hardware.

b. Reinforcing for hardware shall be done in shop. Drilling and tapping for
surface applied finish hardware may be done at project site.

c. Automatic Operator Preparation: Prepare metal doors for automatic door


operators including, but not limited to, internal steel plate reinforcement at
tops and edges of sliding doors, as shown on the Drawings. Coordinate
door preparation for sliding and swing doors with automatic door operator
manufacturer.

I. Shop Painting:

a. Clean, treat, and paint exposed surfaces of steel, including galvanized


surfaces.

b. Remove mill scale, rust, oil, grease, dirt, and other foreign materials before
application of primer.

c. Apply polyester powder coat.

J. Vision Panels:
Furnish removable metal glazing beads, neatly mitred at corners with concealed
fixings.
Glazing of vision panels to internal doors shall:

a. Conform to specification for interior glazing specified elsewhere.

b. Install components as recommended by component manufacturer /


fabricator.

c. Where double glazing is specified, provide desiccant sacks, concealed in


perforated stop at head, set flush with face sheet in structural glazing tape
and paint sealant, to prevent condensation of vapours within the air space
between glass panels.

d. Ensure that components are clean before installing painting stops and
structural glazing tape

e. Set glazing panel plumb and level, leaving uniform gap for continuous
sealant joint.

f. Provide backer rod as required for effective continuous seal around


perimeter of glazing panel, tool sealant flush with face of door.

K. Door Silencers: Except on weather-stripped and gasketed frames, drill stops to receive
3 silencers on strike jambs of single-swing frames and 2 silencers on heads of double-
swing frames.

2.4 COMPONENTS

INTERNAL FIRE RATED STEEL DOORS


-Reference(s): Refer to Door Schedule.
-Manufacturer and reference: Powdershield fire doors.
-Structural opening dimension: Refer to the Door Schedule.
-Except as otherwise indicated on the drawings and schedule, door leaves shall have
standard undercut of 6mm above finished floor level.
-Door Leaves: Doors shall be flush type. Door leaves are to be manufactured from zinc
coated sheet steel formed and in-filled with structurally bonded core material.
-For openings up to and including 1200mm wide steel sheet to door leaves to be a
minimum of 1.2mm thick, for openings wider than 1200mm steel sheet to door leaves to be
a minimum of 1.5mm thick.
-Steel sheet leaves are to be welded to the internal steel frame. Tops and bottoms shall be
reinforced welded to face sheets and formed steel sections, extending from tops to bottoms
of doors.
-Overall door thickness to be 44mm.
-Ironmongery: Leaves and frames shall be reinforced to take selected locks and hardware.
-Glazing details: Doors to be factory glazed, to Architect’s approval. For aperture shape
and configuration indicated. Glass and glazing are to comply with the safety requirements
of BS 6262: 1982.
-Glazing to FD30 doors to comprise of 7mm clear unwired glass with concealed
intumescent/glazing medium and a 20mm steel trim or approved equivalent.
-Glazing to FD60 doors to comprise of 12mm clear unwired glass with concealed
intumescent/glazing medium and a 20mm steel trim or approved equivalent.
-Finish: Refer to door schedule for location of finishes described below and designation to
internal/external face:
ML: Metallic polyester powder coated, colour to be advised by Architect.

INTERNAL NON FIRE RATED STEEL DOORS


-Reference(s): Refer to Door Schedule.
-Manufacturer and reference: Powdershield Personnel
-Structural opening dimension: Refer to the Door Schedule.
-Except as otherwise indicated on the drawings and schedule, door leaves shall have
standard undercut of 6mm above finished floor level.
-Door Leaves: Doors shall be flush type. Door leaves are to be manufactured from zinc
coated sheet steel formed and infilled with structurally bonded core material.

Other Requirements:

INTERNAL STEEL FRAMES


-Manufacturer: To match the door manufacturer
-1.5mm steel with double rebate or as indicated on the drawings.
-Fully welded mitred corners ground smooth. Note: After finishes are applied there should
be no visible evidence of the mitre joint
-Frames are to be mortised, reinforced, drilled and taped for hinges and strikes.
-Provide four fixings per jamb, built in adjustment and complete with cover caps.
-Finish to match door leaf unless otherwise specified.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSPECTION

A. Prior to the start of the door installation, the Door Manufacturer / Installer shall inspect
the site and familiarize himself with all conditions there. He must notify the Architect in
writing of any conditions, which will adversely affect the execution, timely completion
and quality of the installation. Work shall not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions are
corrected. Start of installation shall be construed as conclusive evidence that the
existing conditions have been examined and are acceptable.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Placing Frames: Set frames plumb and accurate to retain their position during
construction of partitions. After wall construction is completed, remove temporary
braces and spreaders leaving surfaces smooth and undamaged. Installation schedule
shall allow metal frames in concrete block walls to be grouted solid in sequence with
block installation.

B. Install to manufacturers recommendations to achieve fire rating indicated.
