Antônimo é uma palavra que tem o significado oposto da outra. É o

Língua Inglesa e são importantíssimos para que se possa fazer a

que é colocado, duas (ou mais) palavras podem ter exatamente a mesma

grafia, mas são pronunciadas de forma diferente, dependendo de seus
significados.
As expressões idiomáticas também conhecidas por idioms são frases que

não tem o mesmo significado das palavras que você encontra no dicionário
quando as pesquisa separadamente, ou seja não podem ser traduzidas ao
pé da letra. Isto torna então difícil para os alunos e leitores interpretarem
corretamente um texto em Língua Inglesa.
Expressões idiomáticas (Idioms ou sayings) são palavras, frases ou

expressões que são comumente utilizados no cotidiano na conversação dos
falantes nativos de Inglês. Elas são muitas vezes metafóricas (significado
não-literal) e tornam a linguagem mais colorida. Existem centenas delas,
aqui nesta aula, veremos as principais, algumas das mais usadas. Observe
inicialmente o exemplo abaixo, que caiu na última prova da CGU/ESAF:
Bite the dust = ser derrotado, ser vencido, cair morto ou ferido, bater
as botas, chegar ao fim, falhar.
No texto da prova, que é um artigo do The Economist, o título é Another

one Bites the Dust ( Mais um é derrotado), o texto se refere ao governo
romeno que foi subjugado. Observe outro exemplo com a mesma
expressão no artigo abaixo que também é do The Economist:

1 The United Nations Commission on International
Trade Law (UNCITRAL) approved on Thursday, 3 July, the
draft Convention on Contracts for the International Carriage
4 of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea. The draft Convention will
be presented to the General Assembly for conclusion later in
2008.
7 Since 2002, UNCITRAL’s Working Group on
Transport Law has been working in close cooperation with
interested international, inter-governmental and

draft Convention was prepared over thirteen sessions from
13 April 2002 to January 2008, and was submitted for the
approval of UNCITRAL in New York.
The Convention on Contracts for the International
16 Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea aims to create a
modern and uniform law concerning the international
carriage of goods which include an international sea leg, but
19 which is not limited to port-to-port carriage of goods. In
addition to providing for modern door-to-door container
transport, there are many innovative features contained in the
22 draft Convention, including provisions allowing for

electronic transport records, and other more technical

features to fill the perceived gaps in existing transport
25 regimes. Extensive negotiation by the Member States and
observers of the Commission has resulted in overwhelming
support for a significant increase to the limits on carrier
28 liability for cargo loss or damage that apply in most
countries. This is expected to be of substantial benefit for
shippers, particularly those in developing and
31 least-developed countries, which are consumers of

modernization of the legal regime in this area, which in many
34 countries dates back to the 1920s or earlier, will lead to an
overall reduction in transaction costs, increased predictability
when problems are encountered, and greater commercial
37 confidence when doing business internationally.

1 In a hangar outside Zurich, engineers are paring

away at the obstacles to a very 21st century challenge: flying
a plane around the world powered by nothing but the rays of
4 the sun. If the Solar Impulse project goes to plan, in 2011 a
gangly aircraft with the wingspan of an Airbus A380 and the
weight of a compact car will attempt to circle the globe in
