Shear Force

1.1 Objective

To show the shear force at a cut section of beam is equal to the algebraic sum of the force
acting to the left or right of the section.

1.2 Theory

1.3 Apparatus

a) A pair of simple supports.

b) Special beam a cut section.
c) A set of weights with several load hangers

1.4 Procedure

a) Two aluminium simple supports are fixed to the base at a distance equal to the span
of the beam to be tasted.
b) The load hanger is hanged to the beam.
c) The beam is placed on top of the support
d) The load hanger is placed to the desired location.
e) The beam is levelled using the screw attached to the tension spring and the spring
balance road with a help by spirit level on both side of the section.
f) The gauges reading is adjust to zero using the adjust screw at the bottom of the
balance
g) The load is placed on the load hanger and the beam is levelled again by adjusting
the nut at the top of the force gauge. (adjusting nut ’A’) until the left section is lifted
from the right section.
h) The cut section is checked.
i) The spring level is checked, If beam is not levelled, adjust the nut on the tension
spring (adjusting nut ’B’) until the beam is levelled.
j) Step 9 to 8 is repeated until the beam is levelled
k) The force gauge reading is recorded. This represents the shear force at the cut
section.
l) The entire load is removed from the load hangers and different set of loading is
applied at different locations.

1.5 Result
1.5.2 Beam span = 900 mm

1.5.2 Distance of shear section from the left support = 600 mm

1.5.3 Table 1.0 above show the shear force for theoritcal and experimental case for each
of load case.
