Angels

Abaddon Angel of the bottomless pit, identified in Revelations as the leader of


the locust-like beings sent from the abyss to torment unbelievers. He
is the angel who will bind Satan for a thousand years. Other sources
identify Abbadon as a dark angel and an angel of death.
Abalim Hebrew name for the angelic choir known as 'thrones' in Christian lore.
Also known as Arelim.
Abbaton An angel of God, applied to the conjuring and control of demons.
Abdiel A leading angel in Milton's Paradise Lost. Abdiel, a member of the
seraphim, stands against the rebel angels during the war in heaven,
and even stands up to Satan himself. Some controversy exists over
whether Abdiel is mentioned in other Jewish and Christian lore, or is a
creation of Milton for the literary work.
Abyss, Angel The angel with authority over the nearly endless deep known as the
of bottomless pit or Hell. It is the prison of Satan and the fallen angels.
The Angel of the Abyss is often considered to be Abbadon.
Accusing Name given to the angel who accuses the sinner of action; also applied
Angel to Satan in his role as the adversary, who constantly tests humanity's
faith. Occasionally applied to Samael.
Achaiah Patron angel of Patience.
Adabiel One of the seven archangels, he has authority over Jupiter and Mars.
Possibly a variant of Abdiel.
Adimus Long venerated by the Christian Church, Adimus was removed from
the roll of angels eligible for honor by the faithful in 745. He was
declared ineligible for honor by a Council of Rome for lack of evidence
for his existence and works.
Adiririon Found in Jewish mystical traditions, he is ranked among the chief of
the angelic orders. His name is also connected with the name of God
and was used on amulets as a preventative for the evil eye.
Adoil An angel-like being, compared to an explosive emanation or spiritual
essence created by God.
Aeon Gnostic beings created by God, seen as an order of spirits or angelic
beings usually numbering 365.

Akathrielah An angelic being so powerful that his name was used for God. He stood
Yelod Saboth above the other angels in judgment.
Akhazriel Ranked as the 'herald of God', used by God to give declarations and
divine pronouncements. Akhazriel was dispatched by God to inform
Moses that his prayer for a longer life had not been granted.
Al-Zabamiyah Group of 19 angels mentioned in the Qur'an. They guard the Islamic
version of Hell.
Amitiel Patron angel of Truth and Justice, as well as Weakness.
Anabona The angel by whom God created the world. According to Hebrew lore,
Moses heard the name Anabona when he was given the Ten
Commandments.
Ananchiel Patron angel of Grace.
Anaphiel The leader of the eight superior angels of the Merkabah, the ascending
heavens of Jewish mysticism. He is chief bearer of the seal and keeper
of the keys to heaven's halls. According to the Third Book of Enoch, he
carried Enoch to Heaven where Enoch became the angel Metatron.
Annunciation, Title given to Gabriel in his role as the messenger of God to the Virgin
Angel of Mary to announce the conception of Christ.
Apocalypse, Title of the angel who will bring tidings of the end of the world and the
Angel of immanent judgment of the human race. Alternately believed to be
Michael, Gabriel, Orifiel, Raphael and Haniel.
Aputel One of the angels of Hebrew lore, the priest who entered the "holy of
holies" in the tabernacle of the Great Temple of Jerusalem wore a
plaque on their breasts that bore his name. By using his name, a
trained and powerful sorcerer was reputed to be able to raise the
dead.
Arael Patron angel of Birds.
Arariel An angel of the waters, Arariel is believed to have authority over the
oceans and be beneficial to fisherman. He is also believed to be able to
cure stupidity.
Ariel Mentioned in the Bible as a city and the name of a man, Ariel is also
believed to be an angel - although what his role was is uncertain. He is
sometimes believed to be a companion of Raphael, although Milton
lists him as one of the fallen angels routed by Abdiel in his work
Paradise Lost.
Arkiel Listed in the First Book of Enoch as a fallen angel - one of the 200
angels who taught mankind certain kinds of knowledge. Also
mentioned as one of the good angels, he is believed to be one of the
angels who carries souls of the dead before the throne of God for
Judgment.
Armisael Patron angel of the womb and an angel who should be called on to
assist in childbirth.
Asaph Angel who is said to have authored twelve of the Psalms - number 50
and numbers 73 to 83.
Ascension, Two angels mentioned in Acts as appearing to the apostles at the
Angels of the moment of Christ's ascension into Heaven.
Asuryal Angel mentioned in the First Book of Enoch. He is believed to be the
angel sent to warn Noah of the impending flood.
At-taum Name means 'the twin' - Credited by the Manichaeans as the giver of
revelations to the religious leader Mani.
Azaziel Seraph who figured in Lord Byron's poem "Heaven and Earth". He fell
in love with Anah, the granddaughter of Cain. To save her from the
great flood, the angel carried her to another planet.
Azrael Angel of Death in Muslim and Jewish lore, his name means "whom God
helps". Muslims claim he has 4000 wings, 7000 feet and a number of
eyes and tongues equal to the of people inhabiting Earth. Each time he
blinks an eye, it signals that another person has died. He is assigned
the task of removing the human soul from the body at the time of
death. He also keeps track of the births and deaths in his great book.
Ballaton Angel whose name is used when drawing the Pentagram of Solomon, a
symbol used for summoning spirits and conducting mystical rites.
Bardiel Mentioned in the Third Book of Enoch as a prince of the seven
heavens. Each of the seven princes has command over a heavenly
host, and has a number of ministering angels. Baradiel is in charge of
the third heaven, and also helps to guide the progress of the world. He
is an angel of hail.
Baraqiel Prince of the Second Heaven and an angel of lightning, chance and
luck. Identified with Uriel and possibly the fallen angel Baraqyal.
Barattiel One of the Angelic Princes, he is placed between Tagas and Harmon in
order of precedence. He literally holds the highest heaven on the tips
of his spread fingers.
Bath Qol A female angel whose name means "heavenly voice". She is said to be
one of the voices of the will of God, perhaps the voice heard by Cain
asking "Where is thy brother Abel?"
Beburoa Mentioned in the book Revelation of Esdras (Ezra) as one of the nine
angels who will reign over the end of the world.
Bethor One of the seven angels which rule the 196 divisions of Heaven. He is
also the angel of Jupiter.
Boamiel Mentioned in the obscure Jewish mystical work the Book of the Angel
Raziel as one of the angels with authority over the four divisions of
Heaven.
Boel The angel of Saturn and the keeper of the keys to the four corners of
the Earth. He possesses the key to the Garden of Eden, locked by God
after the Fall of Humanity.
Bottomless Angel with authority over the Abyss, often called Hell. Usually
Pit, identified as Abbadon.

Burning Bush, Angel who appeared to Moses in the form of a burning bush. In some
Angel of the Jewish traditions, identified as Zagzagel.
Camael Also known as Chamuel or Kemuel, he is identified as one of the seven

Cassiel A leader of the choir of angels known as the powers, he is the angel of
tears and temperance. Rules over Saturday.
Cerviel Member of the choir of angels known as principalities. According to
some, he was sent by God to assist David in his fight with Goliath,
providing the young David strength and inspiration.
Chasan Patron angel of Air.
Cherub Short for cherubim, one of the most powerful of the choirs of angels.
The cherub image has developed over time into that of an adorable
baby angel, as opposed to the awesome power suggested in earlier
lore.
Cherubim One of the nine accepted choirs of angels, cherubim stand only below
the seraphim in closeness to God. They maintain the records of heaven
and perform the many administrative duties required to keep Heaven
going. They are the guardians of the fixed stars. Chief among them
are: Kerubiel, Ophaniel, Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael and Zophiel.
Chieftains Name given to certain angels who act as guardians of the nations of
the world. Numbered by Qabalahists as seventy.
Choirs Organizations of angels into hierarchies, usually numbering nine.
Those choirs closer to God are considered more powerful, intelligent
and knowledgeable. Also known as angelic orders.

Death, Angel A universally feared angel, he is the servant of God charged with
of ending the lives of those slated to die. Possible candidates include
Bebriel, Metatron, Samael, Adriel, Azrael and Hemah.
Destruction, Angels assigned the task of punishing the sinners and wrongdoers,
Angels of both on Earth and in Hell. Often seen as purifiers, scholars often
question whether they are good or evil. Mentioned in the Old
Testament as the avenging angels which destroyed Sodom and
Gomorrah, massacred 70,000 people to punish the pride of David, and
wiped out the Assyrian army.
Dominations Choir of angels ranked fourth in importance or order from God. They
are assigned the duty of regulating tasks among angels, and handling
the details of the Cosmos. They are believed to wear green and gold,
and to receive their instructions from the cherubim.
Dubbiel One of the chieftans, or angels assigned to guardians over the seventy
nations of the world. He was the Angel of Persia, a position which
placed him at odds with the Chosen People of Israel and their protector
Michael. He is believed to be a fallen angel.
Duma Patron angel of dreams and guardian of Egypt. Believed to be the
angel which, in Jewish lore, appeared to the Israelites and terrified
them as they fled Egypt. Now considered a fallen angel.
Earth, Angels The angels who watch over humanity and the Earth, maintaining the
of proper course of both. According to 17th century angel expert Thomas
Heywood, there are four angels of the earth, corresponding to the four
cardinal directions: Gabriel (north), Uriel (south), Michael (east) and
Raphael (west).
Egypt, Angel Angel charged with the guardianship of the nation of Egypt. Identified
of as several different angels, including Samael, Mastema and Duma -
who is most often considered the true Angel of Egypt.

Elders Name given to a group of 24 beings who sit upon thrones encircling
the throne of God, as described in the Biblical Revelations. These

the first of the seven heavens, where they act as "rulers of the stellar
orders".
Enoch Patriarch of the Book of Genesis and the supposed writer of the Books
of Enoch, books written at the time of many of the books of the Bible
and consistent with them. The Books of Enoch hold a wealth of angelic
information, and are considered by many to be the best source of
angelic lore. Enoch was 'pleasing to God' who, according to legend was
transported to Heaven and transformed into the angel Metatron.
Ephemera Angels whose life span is only a day or even a few hours (their name
means "short-lived"). They are created each morning to chant the "Te
Deum" or great song of praise to God. Once the chant is completed,
they are reabsorbed into the divine brilliance.
Erelim Hebrew equivalent of the choir of angels known as the Thrones. Name
means "Valiant ones".
Eserchie Angel who appears in lore surrounding Moses, although he does not
appear in the Bible. He was supposedly the angel which aided Moses in
inflicting two of the Plagues upon Egypt, specifically the turning of the
Nile into blood and the plague of frogs.
Exael One of the ten angels mentioned in the First Book of Enoch as
descending to earth and taking mortal wives.
Face, Angels Revered group of angels from Judaic lore, possibly twelve in all. They
of have the honor of beholding the face of God and residing ever in the
divine presence. Among these angels are Michael, Uriel, Zagzagel and
Metatron.
Fire, Angel of A source of divine inspiration in art and music, the Angel of Fire has
been given several identifications.
Four Winds, Name given to the angels who guard the four winds of the Earth. They
Angels of the are: Raphael (west), Gabriel (north), Michael (east) and Uriel (south).
Gabriel Archangel whose name means "God is my strength", Gabriel is one of
the best-known and beloved of angels - and one of only three angels
named in the Bible. He has been called the angel of the power of god,
and the angel of judgment. He will supposedly appear on the last day
and blow the trumpet which will call the living and the dead to face
their final judgment. Known in Arabic as Jibril, he plays a major role in
the Islamic traditions as the dictator of the entire Qur'an to
Muhammad. He is called the angel of truth.
Gadiel Angel who lives in the fifth heaven, he was invoked by sorcerers to
repel evil. His name was used as a word of power and inscribed on
amulets or within charms.
Gazardiel Also known as Gazaiya, he is responsible for making sure that the sun
rises and sets each day just as it should. In other traditions, he helps
to send prayers of the faithful upward to God.
Germael Angel who was sent to gather the dust of the Earth for God so that he
might make Adam. Germael failed in his task because the Earth would
not surrender its dust. Azrael was sent in his place and did not fail.
Gethsemane, Angel who came to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane to give him
Angel of comfort in the hours before Christ's arrest. He is unnamed in Scripture,
but believed to be Gabriel or possibly Chamuel.
Glory, Angels According to the Third Book of Enoch, these angels reside in the
of highest heaven, leading the other angels in endless praise of God.
Thought to number 660,000.
Gonfalons Group of angels who form part of the 'imperial host' described in
Milton's Paradise Lost.
Guardian Those angels who watch over people, churches, places or nations. It is
Angels an established that every person has a guardian angel who stays with
them and protects their physical and spiritual well-being and
happiness. The idea of the guardian angel exists in Judaism,
Christianity and Islam and is believed to exist from the earliest periods
of these traditions.

Haaiah Angel of diplomacy, who helps the efforts of representatives and
ambassadors. He is a member of the angelic order of Dominations.
Habriel Member of the choir of powers. Considered a suitable angel for
invoking in magical rites.
Hadariel Serves as the imposing keeper of the gates of Heaven, according to
Jewish lore. He is one of the tallest of angels, approximately 2 million
miles high. He has a voice so dominating that when he shouts the
proclamations of the Lord, the sound echoes thought the 200,000
heavens, with each word accompanied by 12,000 flashes of lightning.
Hafaza A type of angel found in Islamic lore which is roughly equivalent to the
guardian angel. Four hafaza are assigned to each person, two to guard
them during the day and two at night. They protect mortals from the
evils of Satan and the evil spirits, especially jinn (the Islamic demons).
They also record the deeds of mortals during their life. On the Final
Day of Judgment, these books will be read in order to judge the
mortal's admission to Heaven.
Hamon Powerful and high-ranking angelic prince mentioned in the Third Book
of Enoch. Some traditions equate him with Gabriel.
Haniel Angel whose name means "the grace of God". He is the prince of the
choirs of the principalities and virtues, and as such is considered one of
the seven great archangels.
Harbonah Patron angel of Annihilation.
Hashmal Chief leader of the angelic choir of the hashmalim, the Hebrew
equivalent of the choir of dominations. He is said to be the "fire-
speaking Angel" who is found near the throne of God.
Hayliel YHWH Angelic prince mentioned in the Third Book of Enoch, he is noble and
terrible, capable of swallowing the entire world in one gulp. He has
authority over creatures, whipping them with lashes of fire while
extolling them to proclaim the song of praise.
Hayyoth A group of mighty angels who server under the leadership of the
imposing prince Hayliel YHVH. They are considered analogous to the
later choir of cherubim. The principle task of the hayyoth is to carry
the throne of God.
Hemah Unpleasant angel of wrath in Jewish lore, said to be made of chains of
red and black fire.
Inias One of several angels officially removed from the list of honored angels
recognized by the Christian Church in 745. Also removed were: Uriel,
Sabaoc, Tubuel, Raguel and Simiel. Inias apparently responded quite
poorly and became an enemy of the faith.

Isaac Patron angel of Light.
Israel Occasionally refers to an angel of the high order of hayyoth, the angels
who encircle and support the throne of God. Also refers to Israel-
Jacob, the famous patriarch Jacob in his angelic form.
Israfel Great angel of the Islamic faith, he will descend on the Day of
Judgment and blow the great trumpet summoning the living and dead
to be judged. He is a master of music, and is so tall that he reaches
from Earth to the pillars of Heaven. Patron angel of both music and
poetry.
Ithuriel One of many angels identified in Milton's "Paradise Lost", he is a
cherub sent by Gabriel to capture Satan in the Garden of Eden.
Izrael One of the four Islamic angels of the end of the world, along with
Michael, Gabriel and Israfel.
Jael One of two cherubim who were supposedly carved on the Ark of the
Covenant. With his counterpart Zarall, Jael was placed with wings
spread over the so-called mercy seat of the Ark.
Jeduthun Former choirmaster of the Great Temple of Jerusalem. Transformed
through legend into an angel, where he leads the choirs of angels
during the evening hours.
Jehoel Leader of the seraphim and master of the heavenly choirs.

Jibril Common spelling of the angel Gabriel in Islamic texts and the Qur'an.
Jophiel Also called Iofiel or Zophiel, his name means "The beauty of God". He
is credited as being one of the seven great archangels, and is one of
the leaders of the cherubim. In Christian lore, he is occasionally cited
as the angelic protector of the Tree of Life (a position also credited to
Raphael), and is also seen as the angel who drove Adam and Eve from
the Garden of Eden.

Kadmiel One of the seventy angels to be invoked for safe and successful
childbirth.
Kalka'il Angel with authority over the angelic spirits called huris in Islamic lore.

Kokbiel An angelic prince and the "star of God", he is variously considered one
of the honored or fallen angels. In the First Book of Enoch he is listed
as a fallen angel, while in the Book of the Angel Raziel he is listed as
an honored angel. He is said to have special power over the stars and
be an expert on Astrology.
Kolazonta Angel of destruction, usually identified with the fiery angel overcome
by Aaron in the desert.
Labbiel Original name of the archangel Raphael. Labbiel was unique among
certain groups of angels by not speaking out against the creation of
humanity. He was spared God's wrath, and renamed Raphael, "God
has healed".
Lahabiel Companion of the angel Raphael, he is also an angel called upon to aid
mortals against evil. His name is on many charms and amulets.
Lailah Also Layla. Called the angel of night and the prince of conception. Seen
variously as a good angel or a wicked fallen angel.
Lawidh Angel of Islamic lore who offered the Muslim holy figure Abu Yazid a
mighty kingdom. Abu Yazid refused, sensing that the angel was testing
his devotion to the Lord.
Leliel Patron angel of Night.
Lightning, Angel who has authority over the realm of lightning. Generally
Angel of recognized to be Barakiel, although some place Uriel within this
sphere.
Lord, Angel of General name used in the Bible to connote an angelic messenger sent
the by God, or an angel specifically performing a task assigned by God.

Melkyal Angel said to rise and rule at the beginning of each year for 91 days.
According to the First Book of Enoch, the signs of his rule are the way
the trees bear fruit and the leaves grow on the trees.
Metatron One of the most powerful and important angels, so much so that he
has over 72 titles in the angelic hierarchy. He was once the mortal
Enoch, who was so loved by God that he was transported to heaven
and made an angel. He is considered by some to be the most superior
of angels, even above Gabriel, Michael and Uriel.
Michael Also known as St. Michael the Archangel and the Islamic Mika'il, he is
perhaps the greatest and most-loved (with Gabriel) of all angelic
beings. He is the captain of the angelic host. He appears in the Old
Testament twice, and is actually mentioned in the Bible in the book of
Daniel. He is the ruling prince of the archangels, the choir of virtues
and is an angel of mercy and repentance. Michael is often seen as the
foremost warrior angle, leading the angelic host in battle against the
forces of darkness and evil. During the Final Judgment he will lead the
armies of God against the forces of Satan.
Mihr Patron angel of Friendship.
Moon, Angel of Title borne by several angles, each charged with guardianship and
authority over that celestial body. Candidates include Ofaniel, Gabriel
and Yahriel.
Moroni Angel who appeared to Joseph Smith on Sept. 22nd, 1827. Moroni
revealed several gold plates to Smith which, when translated, became
the Book of Mormon.
Muhammad, Angel beheld by the prophet Muhammad when he was taken to
Angel of heaven. Also the angel Gabriel, who is honored in Islamic lore as the
Angel who dictated to the Prophet the Qur'an.
Mumiel Patron angel of Good Health.
Munkar In Islamic lore, one of two angels, with Nakir, who visits the bodies of
the recently dead. There they ask he soul about the prophet
Muhammad. If the soul answers correctly, it is allowed a comfortable
rest until it enters paradise after the Day of Judgment. If it answers
incorrectly, it is subject to torture until it is consigned to Hell after the
Day of Judgment. The angels are described as black beings with
piercing blue eyes.
Na'aririel Described in the Third Book of Enoch as one of the mighty princes of
YHVH Heaven.
Nakir A fearsome angel of Islamic lore, he and his companion angel Munkar
test the recently deceased as to their worthiness to enter paradise
after the Day of Judgment.
Nathaniel Also Xathanael and Zathael. Angel of fire and the sixth hour, he is one
of three angels with special patronage over all things hidden,
mysterious or arcane.
Nativity, Unknown number of angels who were sent from Heaven to announce
Angels of the birth of Christ in the town of Bethlehem, as recorded in the book of
Luke.
Nine Angels Collective name of the ruling princes of the nine orders, or choirs, of
angels in the celestial hierarchy. The names of these angels vary
widely throughout history.
Nogahel An angel mentioned in the occult work Three Books of Occult
Philosophy by the famous mystic and occultist Cornelius Heinrich
Agrippa von Nettesheim (d. 1535). He is one of the angels who stands
before the throne of God and beholds the face of the Lord.
Nuriel A prominent angel in Jewish lore, he is one of the tallest beings in
Heaven (appx. 3.5 miles high) and is supported by fifty myriads of
angels formed from fire and water. He is the angel of hailstorms, and
supposedly met Moses when the lawgiver journeyed to Heaven.
Och An angel mentioned prominently in occult lore, he is the patron of
alchemy and granter of knowledge and wisdom to those able to
successfully invoke him. Ranked in some circles as the angel of the
Sun.
Onayepheton Angel mentioned in the Greater Key of Solomon, by S.L. MacGregor
Mathers. He can be raised by a competent sorcerer and convinced to
assist them. He is believed to be used by God to raise the dead.
Ophaniel One of several proposed leaders of the angelic choir known as the
thrones, called in Hebrew lore the ofanim after their leader. As these
angels are known as the wheels, Ophaniel is sometimes known as the
keeper of the wheels.
Orders, One of the terms used to describe the angelic hierarchy by various
Angelic theologians and scholars through the centuries. According to accepted
custom, there are nine orders of angels organized into three triads;
the seraphim, cherubim and thrones of the first triad, dominations,
virtues and powers of the second triad, and principalities, archangels
and angels of the third triad. Each order has its own functions,
attributes and duties.

Orifiel Ruling angel of the planet Saturn, and ranked among the archangels in
the lists of Pope St. Gregory. He is also listed in other sources as
belonging to the choir of thrones. Considered by some to be the Angel
of the Apocalypse.
Orion An angel appearing in the epic poem Der Messias (The Messiah) by the
German poet Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock (1724-1803). He is listed as
the guardian angel of St. Peter. Several occultists, including Elphias
Levi, have drawn correlations between Orion and the archangel
Michael.
Pahadron A feared angel of terror in Jewish legend.

Puriel Angel who is described in the 2nd century apocryphal work, the
Testament of Abraham. He is described as pitiless, performing the task
of examining the soul of each person brought to Heaven for possible
entry into the blessed realm.
Qaddisin The two powerful beings who stand on either side of the throne of God
and serve, with the Watchers, as the final court of law in Heaven. They
give counsel to God and act as court officials, debating every case
brought before the throne.
Qafsiel Angel identifies with Atregiel and, in some traditions, given authority
over the moon.
Ra'amiel Angel in charge of thunder. He works closely with Matatiel, the angel
of the rain.
Ra'asiel Angel in charge of earthquakes.
Radueriel The archivist of Heaven, he maintains all of the scrolls and documents
of Heaven, bringing forth all relevant records that might be needed in
resolving all disputes before the Throne of God. He is counted as a
prince of heaven and, according to the Third Book of Enoch, he is
honored above all other princes.
Raguel Angel who must maintain discipline among the angels of heaven, he is
described in the First Book of Enoch as the angel who takes vengeance
for the world and for luminaries. He is also in charge of the second
heaven, and is thought by some to be the angel who transported
Enoch to heaven as described in the Book of Genesis.
Rahab Angel of violence, he is identified with the sea and unbelieveable pride.
According to legend, he was around at the time of the Creation of the
world, in charge of the seas. He is mentioned in the Book of Job, and is
occasionally identified with the fallen angels Leviathan and Behemoth.
Rahatiel The prince of the constellations, he is in charge of the stars in the
heavens and making them move across the sky each night. He is
assisted by 72 angels.
Rahmiel The Angel of Mercy, who promotes compassion and mercy among all
mortals.
Rampel Patron angel of Mountains.
Raphael One of the seven great archangels and one of the best-loved angels of
all time. He is the angel in charge of the sun, healing, science and
knowledge. He is the head of the guardian angels, as well as chief of
the angelic choir of the virtues and a member of the seraphim,
dominations and cherubim. Raphael is said to have the best disposition
and sense of humor of any of the angels, and he delights in bringing
happiness, health and joy wherever he goes.
Rashiel Patron angel of Earthquakes.
Raziel Angel of the Mysteries, he possesses a staggering amount of
information on all matters secret, arcane and occult. His knowledge
stems from his unique post at the curtain which separates God from
the rest of Creation, where he hears everything that is said or done
around the throne of God.

Angels both good and evil. These records are used at the end of time in order
to decide the fate of a soul in the Final Judgment
Resurection, Unnamed angel who appeared at the tomb of Jesus following his

one of the highest ranking of the heavenly host, said to be superior
even to the great Metatron. In the Third Book of Enoch, Rikbiel has
charge over the wheels of the chariot on which the throne of God sits.

Sahaqiel According to the Third Book of Enoch, Sahaqiel is one of the seven
great archangels and the guardian of the fourth heaven.
Salathiel Archangel whose name means "I have asked the Lord".
Salgiel Patron angel of Snow.
Samael A grim angel, he is often considered to be the angel of death.
Sometimes equated with Satan or considered a fallen angel, Samael is
a resident of the seventh heaven.
Samandiriel Patron angel of Fertility.
Samuil Messenger angel, often considered one of the angels responsible for
transporting Enoch to Heaven.
Sandalphon The tallest angel, and twin brother of the angel Metatron. He is
believed to have once been the prophet Elijah before the prophet was
taken to Heaven, just as his spiritual twin Metatron was once the great
patriarch Enoch. He is the angel of prayer, who carries the prayers of
mortals to God. Patron angel of glory, tears and the unborn embryo.
Santriel Mentioned exclusively in the Jewish mystical work the Zohar. He has
the duty of gathering up the bodies of the dead who in life did not
honor the Sabbath. They are taken to Gehenna and held up before the
sinners so that they might see how the corpses of such wicked people
are the breeding ground for worms.
Saraqael One of the archangels mentioned in the First Book of Enoch. He is in
charge of the spirits of mankind who have sinned in the spirit. He is
accompanied in this work by Gabriel, Raphael, Raguel, Michael and
Suruel. Possibly another name for Uriel.
Sarim Plural of the Hebrew word "sar" ("prince" or "celestial"), used for
certain types of angels in Jewish lore. Refers to a type of singing angel,
who endlessly sing the praises of God. Sarim also refer to the 70
angels in charge of the nations. By custom all of these angels fell from
grace and are now fallen angels - except Michael, the guardian of the
nation of Israel.
Satqiel One of the princes of the seven heavens as noted in the Third Book of
Enoch. He is in charge of the fifth heaven.
Seasons, A group of four angels, with their assistants, who act as patrons of the
Angels of seasons of the year. They are: Spring - Spugliguel; Summer - Tubiel;
Fall - Torquaret; Winter - Attarib.
Semalon Angel mentioned in the Jewish holy work the Talmud as having
proclaimed to the world that Moses had died. Possibly a variant
spelling of Samael.
Seraphiel Prince of the angelic order of the seraphim. He is one of the most
resplendent of angels, described as having the head of an angel and
the body of an eagle, and having so many eyes that they cannot be
counted, each of which shines like a star. His chief duty as the leader
of the seraphim is to teach his charges every song, song and chant in
eternal praise of God.
Seraphim The highest and most beautiful of the nine choirs or orders of angels,
they are the closest group to the throne of God. Their main function is
to circle the throne in endless praise and adoration of God. According
to Enoch and the Biblical book of Isaiah, each seraphim has six wings.
Shamiel One of the many leaders of the angelic choirs in their praise to God.
Shamshiel Patron angel of Day.
Shamsiel Leading angel in the celestial hierarchy, he is sometimes listed as the
guardian of the fourth heaven, although Sahaqiel is also listed in this
post. He is honored as the guardian of Paradise and the chief protector
of the Garden of Eden.

Sidriel Prince of the first heaven according to the Third Book of Enoch. He is

Sun, Angels of Title given to several angels in the various angelic lore, including
Galgalliel, Michael, Raphael, Varcan and Uriel. The angel of the sun has
charge over the celestial orb of the sun.
Suphlatus Patron angel of Dust.
Suruel Also known as Suriel, he is a mighty archangel who, along with the
angel of the burning bush, imparted the wealth of Moses' great
knowledge. In recognition of his work with the Lawgiver, God allowed
Suruel to descend to earth and retrieve the soul of Moses at the time
of the patriarch's death.
Tabris Patron angel of Free Will.
Tadhiel According to Jewish lore, he was the angel sent at the last minute to
prevent Abraham from sacrificing his son, Isaac.
Tagas Identified in the Third Book of Enoch as the chief director of the angelic
choirs which sing eternal praise to God. Has under his direction other
angelic directors such as Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun.
Tahariel Patron angel of Purity.
Tarshishim Hebrew name meaning "brilliant (or shining) ones", given to the order
of angels later called the virtues. Their ruling prince is most often
identified as Tarshish, but is occasionally listed as Sabrael or Haniel.
Theliel Patron angel of Love.
Thrones Order or choir of angels, often listed third in the angelic hierarchy.
They have the task of carrying out the diving judgments of God. In
some heavenly orders, the Thrones exist as the chariots on which the
throne of God rests or the wheels of the chariot.
Tzadkiel Patron angel of Justice.
Uriel One of the seven great archangels and one of the most important
angels of the celestial hierarchy, along with Michael, Gabriel and
Raphael. Uriel, whose name means "fire of God", is a truly formidable
angel, listed as the angel of the sun, angel of presence, angel of
thunder and terror. He is the angel of music and salvation, and
according to Enoch was sent to warn Moses of the coming deluge. He
was accepted as one of the archangels of the Christian church until the
8th century, when Pope Zachary removed his name from the ranks of
the Church's recognized angels. He lives on in the Catholic church,
however, as St. Uriel.
Uzziel One of seven angels with the exhalted position of standing at the very
throne of God according to the Book of the Angel Raziel. Occasionally
listed as the patron angel of Egypt.

and storms, except for hurricanes which are ruled by Za'afiel.
Zadkiel Also called Tzadkiel, Satqiel and Zachiel. He one of the seven great
archangels and the ruler of the fifth heaven. He is said to be the angel
who appeared to Abraham as the patriarch was about to sacrifice his
son Isaac. He is honored as the chief or prince of the order of
dominations, an angel of mercy and the patron angel of memory and
the planet Jupiter.

Moses the knowledge of the names of God. He is a profound scholar
and resides in the seventh heaven with God.
