The prime cause is urbanization - the density of people and economic activities
at Dhaka. There is no big city of the world with a population impact like Dhaka,
where non-motorized and motorized transports exist in the same road.
Dhaka City has very inadequate road networks. For a standard city, where the
minimum road requirement is 25%, Dhaka has only 7.5% road of its total area.
30% of this 7.5% road is also occupied by the hawkers, salesman and
shopkeepers.
Broken Roads.
Under the growing load of traffic, roads are getting cratered and potholed.
Which slow down the traffic and causing a good jam.
The three major bus stations, Sayedabad, Gabtoli and Mohakhali do not have
sufficient capacity to accommodate all the buses operating from here.
Few organizations like DCC, RAJUK, WASA, DESA, TITAS GAS keeps on
working on the roads of Dhaka.
Instead of working together, they wait for each other to finish and start their
own job and they keep on excavating earth at places.
Special Situations
Traffic-jam takes serious turn during the holy month of Ramadan, during rainy
season and during special occasions like Bishwa Iztema, international trade fair
etc and there is no contingency of the government to tackle these special
situations.
