Introduction
Al-Khalid tank is one of the best tanks in the world. It’s not on the top of
world ranking of tanks but it is superior to many other modern tanks. We are
not only saying this, we can prove this..

Regarding world ranking it is ranked number 11 by World Defense and

Military. Now why it is ranked no.11? It is because of many small lacking. Let
me tell you briefly about some of its features;

Particulars

Al-Khalid main battle tank named after the Legendary Islamic General
Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed (R.A); is the result of a joint development
project of 1990’s between HIT (Heavy Industries Taxila) of Pakistan and
NORINCO (North Industries Corporation) of China, and was handed over to
Pakistan in 2001. Al-Khalid tank is based on China’s Type-90 II. It has a
combat weight of 46 tons and carries a crew of 3. Fitted with a 1200
Horsepower, Al-Khalid has water-cooled diesel engine which gives it a
maximum speed of 65 to 70 kmph on-road and 55 kmph off-road with
acceleration from 0-32km in 10 seconds.

Armament includes a 125mm smooth bore main gun equipped with

a dynamic muzzle reference system and supported by a 7.62mm co-axial
machine gun and a 12.7mm remote firing anti-aircraft gun.

Body covered with Explosive reactive armor i.e.; two iron layers
with a ceramic layer in between that protects it from damage. The power to
weight ratio is 26 horsepower per ton, enhancing the tank’s agility. Al-
Khalid’s operational range is 400 kilometers which expands its
operational range with minimum logistic support; can travel up to 400
kilometer if the tank is fueled full. The thermal night vision devices enable
the tank crew to fight at night as well. Al-Khalid is also fitted with auxiliary
power unit, which powers all electrical systems when the main engine is
turned off. Al-Khalid tank got Infrared reflective paint.
Al-Khalid is capable of targeting the enemy in the dark of night. It has
the ability to auto-track the enemy's tanks, only French tanks have this
capability. It is also as powerful as the German tank Leopard in terms of
movement. The Al-Khalid tank's performance is much better than the
Russian T-90-S tank, since it is designed for extreme temperatures.

Drawbacks

• 40 minutes starting time to heat-up resulting in the drainage of

batteries.

• Electronic Loading system, in case of short circuit the Auto load is

lifeless.

• Comparatively low gun life of 500 rounds.

• Operating procedure is complex

• Low crew carriage capability.

Distinctive Advantage

Some major points regarding marketing of Al-Khalid tank are;

• It is especially designed for desert and snowy areas.

• It has End-User customizable transmission kit (In 1hour 5 minutes).

• It is designed to work in extreme temperatures.

Competitive Advantage

• Cost Effective (Al-Khalid:Abram M1, 6:1)

• Light Weight

Right now one Al-Khalid tank costs us nearly $0.833 million

Currently HIT (Heavy Industry Texila) is manufacturing 50 tanks per
year (Only for Pakistan Military). We can increase its manufacturing number
by increasing its export. If we get export orders in hundreds, we can
certainly increase tank production, for example; if Saudi Arabia orders 300
tanks we can increase its number by 100 per year.

Currently we have 250 Al-Khalid tanks and 300 more have been
ordered. In next 18 to 20 years PAK Army will replace its tanks by 100 Al-
Khalid tanks.

Regarding its international forecasted demand, it is said 45% of all

MBT’s (Main Battle Tanks) until 2015 will be occupied by Al-Khalid.

Forecast International expects Al-Khalid tanks will continue to

dominate market of 60.57% of tanks rolling out worldwide and it will occupy
52.28% of market through 2018.

Target Market

The countries that showed interest in AK tank in past are as under;

• Malaysia (In year 2002)

• Saudi Arabia (In year 2006)

• Srilanka (In year 2008)

Other countries which we are going to target in future are;

• Burma

• Oman

• Iran

There are rumors that Saudi Arabia wants to buy 300 AK tanks but there
are some political disputes and political personals disliking that is hindering
the deal, but it certainly can be resolved. A strategy may be using Nawaz
Sharif as a card to get the deal.

Recently, Srilanka has again showed interest (in 2010). We are expecting
a really bright future there. In 2007 Srilanka bought $50 million ammunition
from Pakistan. In 2009, the quantity of merchandize ordered tripled.
Peruvian government is considering to buy 80 to 140 tanks. It’s a $500
million deal.

Competitors

The current competitors are;

• China

• Russia

• Ukraine

• Poland

• Germany

• United States of America

• India

Comparison with other tanks

• Al-Khalid vs. T99

Working of Al-Khalid tank’s engine is much better than T99

regarding desert areas.

• Al-Khalid vs. Abram M1

Our major advantage over Abram is Low price. Abram is 6 times
more expensive than Al-Khalid. The Jet Engine of Abram also fails in
desert areas.

Future Improvements

Al-Khalid tank is putting on weight as it adds new systems;

better crew protection and increased horsepower.
