Rekindling the Fire:
Examining the Stories
That Have Shaped Us
No doubt you had a particular
scripture story you claimed as a child-
hood favorite. David and Goliath? Noah
and the Ark? Jonah and the Whale?
These stories hold great power and
visual drama, but what do they mean to
our faith today? How can we look at
these ancient stories in new ways? How
do we rekindle the fire that holds a
message that transcends time? Or are
these stories simply flights of the
imagination best left to the past?
During the long season of Epiphany
this year that spans the months of
January, February and the first week of
March, we will explore this theme and
many of the scriptures and doctrines
that have defined Christian life. We
will ask ourselves difficult questions
about them and allow them to challenge
us in new ways. As author Madeline
L’Engle once said: “Not all scriptures
are factual but they all hold truth.”
