O distrito da Guarda apresenta um número reduzido de

obras com interesse arquitectónico (1), fruto sobretudo
da sua interioridade.

Na cidade da Guarda, para além da escassez, só nos

últimos anos começaram a surgir alguns equipa-
mentos relevantes, dos quais destacamos o Teatro
Municipal da Guarda, da autoria do arquitecto Carlos
Veloso. A Biblioteca Municipal do gabinete Europlan
também implica uma visita, assim como o Shopping
VIVACI do atelier Promontório.

Recomendamos uma incursão a Vila Nova de Foz Côa

para visitar o Museu de Arte e Arqueologia do Vale do
Côa, projectado por Camilo Rebelo e Tiago Pimentel.

pela capacidade de uma obra despertar motivação não apenas
para uma visita, mas sobretudo para uma segunda visita. Se uma

The district of Guarda presents a reduced number of works
of architectural interest (1), mostly a result of its inland
location.

In the city of Guarda, alongside the scarceness, only in the

past few years have relevant facilities began to emerge,
of which we highlight the Municipal Theatre of Guarda,
by architect Carlos Veloso. The Municipal Library by the
Europlan office also implies a visit, as does the VIVACI
Shopping by the architectural office Promontório.

We recommend an incursion to Vila Nova de Foz Côa to visit

the Archaeological Art Museum of the Côa Valley, designed
by Camilo Rebelo and Tiago Pimentel.

(1) The definition of architectural interest is essentially set by the works

capacity to motivate not only a visit, but most of all a second visit. If
a work possesses that capacity to “seduce”, then it is because it has

O Teatro Municipal da Guarda é uma obra arrojada, da
autoria do arquitecto Carlos Veloso.
As soluções linguístico/formais, a materialidade, a
plasticidade e o efeito cénico da intervenção remetem
efectivamente para o universo conceptual da nova
geração de arquitectos portugueses.
As relações com o contexto não são detectáveis num
primeiro momento. Porém, os edifícios não são apenas
auto-referenciais, procuram organizar e integrar a
estrutura urbana existente.
Esta obra é merecedora de uma visita atenta e
assume-se como um ícone de modernidade que dota a
cidade de um equipamento essencial para a fixação da
sua população.
Guarda’s Municipal Theatre is a daring building, designed by
architect Carlos Veloso.
The formal/linguistic solutions, the materiality, the plasticity
and the scenic effect of the intervention effectively refer
to the conceptual universe of the new generation of
Portuguese architects.
The relations with context are not detectable at a first
glance. However, the buildings are not solely self-referential,
they search to organize and integrate the existing urban
structure.
This work is worthy of an attentive visit and embraces being
an icon of modernity that provides the city of an essential
facility to help settle its population.

As gravuras de Foz Côa foram classificadas pela
UNESCO como Património Mundial da Humanidade
em Dezembro de 1998, tendo sido criado o Parque
Arqueológico do Vale do Côa, que tem possibi-
litado visitas guiadas a três núcleos pré-históricos.
Recentemente foi construído o Museu de Arte e
Arqueologia do Vale do Côa, com âmbito e conteúdos
assentes na divulgação e preservação da arte rupestre
do Vale do Côa.
O edifício é um enorme monólito com oito metros
de altura na vertente virada para o Vale do Douro, é
pontuado por alguns rasgos verticais e encontra-se
semi-enterrado. Simula uma gigantesca pedra de
xisto, com a particularidade das suas paredes em
betão incluírem pigmentos de xisto natural que
oxidarão com o tempo.
The Foz Côa engravings were classified by UNESCO as
World Heritage in December of 1998, having created the
Archaeological Park of Foz Côa, which has allowed for
guided visits to three pre-historic nucleuses. The Archae-
ological Art Museum of the Côa Valley was recently built,
with its scope and content based on the promotion and
preservation of the rupestral art of the Côa Valley.
This building is an enormous monolith, eight meters high in
the side turned to the Douro Valley, it is punctuated by some
vertical breaches and is found semi-buried. The building
simulates a gigantic schist stone, with the particularity of its
concrete walls incorporating natural schist pigment that will
oxidize with time.
