Biodiversity :

Biodiversity is the sum of all the different species of animals, plants, fungi and microbial organisms living
on Earth and the variety of habitats in which they live. Biodiversity describes how much variety an
ecosystem has, in terms of resources and species, and also genetically within species. There are 3 types
of biodiversity ; species diversity, genetic diversity and ecosystem.

1. Species Diversity

Species diversity is the number of different species that are represented in a given community. It
consists of three components: species richness, taxonomic or phylogenetic diversity and species
evenness. Species richness is a simple count of species, taxonomic or phylogenetic diversity is
the genetic relationship between different groups of species, whereas species evenness
quantifies how equal the abundances of the species are.

2. Genetic Diversity

Genetic diversity describes how closely related the members of one species are in a given
ecosystem. In simple terms, if all members have many similar genes, the species has low genetic
diversity. Because of their small populations, endangered species may have low genetic diversity
due to inbreeding. This can pose a threat to a population if it leads to inheritance of undesirable
traits or makes the species more susceptible to disease. Having high genetic diversity helps
species adapt to changing environments.

3. Ecosystem Diversity

A region may have several ecosystems, or it may have one. Wide expanses of oceans or deserts
would be examples of regions with low ecological diversity. A mountain area that has lakes,
forests and grasslands would have higher biodiversity, in this sense. A region with several
ecosystems may be able to provide more resources to help native species survive, especially
when one ecosystem is threatened by drought or disease.

Human impact of the beach :

Three major part of the beach humans have impacted the most are pollution levels, marine life,
and erosion rates. Waste on the beaches increased because more tourists are coming to the beach.
Many swimmers get sick after swimming in the sea because of runoff waste. Human activities have
disturbed animals and their way of living on the beach. Animals from all sizes are affected by human
activities. Constructions on beaches have caused an increase in erosion. Some people would not care
about the trash that they leave behind when they visit the beach. On the other hand, there are some
positive human impact for the beach itself. For example, tourists, either domestic or from outside the
country, they came to visit the beach for a vacation or holiday. Because of the tourists, the economy in
Pandawa beach increases.

Benefits :

Biodiversity is important is because it helps to keep the environment in a natural balance. An

ecosystem which is species-rich is more resilient and adaptable to external stress than one in which the
range of species is limited. In a system where species are limited, the loss or temporary reduction of any
one could disrupt a complex food chain with serious effects on other species in that same system. Once
biodiversity is sufficient, if one nutrient cycling path is affected another pathway can function and the
ecosystem.

In Pandawa Beach many trees can helps to lean the air as it absorbs odors and pollutant gases.
Trees also reduce runoff by breaking rainfall thus allowing the water to flow down the trunk and into the
earth below the tree. This prevents storm-water from carrying pollutants to the ocean. When mulched,
trees act like a sponge that filters this water naturally and uses it to recharge groundwater supplies.

Conditions :

The condition nowadays in Pandawa Beach is getting worse comparing to the previous years.
The beach is officially opened in 2012, the beach itself gains more popularity among local weekenders
and international visitors. Since many tourists came to this beach, the area become more crowded than
it is before. When tourists visited the beach, some of them would leave their trashes behind instead of
throwing them on where it should be. More tourists means more vehicles, the pollution around the
beach area increases because many kinds of transportations are coming. However, because of many
tourists visited the beach, the economy there is getting better than it used to be.
