Interview with “The Little Queen of Chess” IVANA

FURTADO
Recently crowned Under-8 Asian Youth Chess Champion Ivana has challenged many on her chess board. Fernanda
Andrade, Research Assistant at The International Centre, Goa talked to the little queen of chess.

She can barely talk but you can never take your eyes from her when she plays chess.

She makes moves as fast as any age old champion could do and she is –when playing-as
serious as any world champions which she is now.

Meet Ivana Maria Furtado, just eight years old, she is a child prodigy in Chess and has
won laurels not just for India -at such a young age- but also for her own state of Goa.

Ivana is the winner of the gold Medal at the Under 8 Asian Youth Chess Championship,
which was held in U.A.E this year and the gold Medal at the World School Chess Championship in Greece in 2007, and of course a gold
medal at the World Youth Championship in Georgia in 2006.

Ask her what helped her develop interest in chess at such a young age and she replies without hesitation, “I had an environment
wherein my brother, Keegan used to be actively playing at various National Championships and school championships along with
other state players. We used to travel for various tournaments at Lucknow, Delhi, Calicut etc. and it is at this age, when I was around
three to three and a half years that I learnt the game. At 5 years and 3 months I played my first Under-7 tournament at Moira where I
won a prize and it is from there I started off”.

According to Ivana the turning point in her chess career came when she played under -7 nationals at Aurangabad in Maharashtra and
was placed third.

It was then that she came to realize she can do better in this field, where few people have been able to make their mark especially in
our country.

Ivana entered in the Limca Book of World Records in 2007 for being the youngest Indian to win a world title in any sport. Her name
also features amongst the 12 Indians who have world titles which include Viswanathan Anand, P. Hari Krishna and Koneru Humpy.
Ivana was voted the Sportswoman for the Year 2007 by the Goa Sports Journalist Association for the Geno Award, and The Person of
the Year by "Goa Today " in 2007.

She says "while preparing for different championships she has to practice for 3-4 hours a day and at least 8 hours during the
tournament."

According to Ivana’s father Mr. Eli Furtado, ‘had the Secretary of the Goa State Chess Association (GSCA), Mr. Suhas Asnodkar not
discovered the talent and coined her as the "Wonder Girl" in 2005, Ivana would be any other girl.

He said, "Mr. Sameer Salgaoncar, President GSCA and Vice President, All India Chess Federation (AICF) gave her all important thrust in
venturing into international tournaments, the entire chess fraternity who stood by her is one of the reasons behind Ivana’s successes.

According to Ivana’s parents, she never loses hope even when she lost the second round of the Asian Youth Chess Championship.

Ivana says "It helped me to focus better and concentrate more".

According to Ivana's father the GSCA has helped Ivana in every possible way, “but we are expecting more from them, the Sports
Authority of Goa wherein appeal for grants made in (i) July 2006 Asian Youth Championship, held at Tehran where Ivana won the silver
medal (ii) December 2006 Asian Schools Chess festival, held at Singapore where she won a U-7 gold medal and team gold medal have
not been granted till date. Such delays result in the loss of valuable time which is very crucial as Ivana has already played six
international tournaments in a span of eighteen months”.

He further added “we expect much more from the Government of Goa but it has failed in some respects”.

According to Ivana's father the only reason he cannot plan her future is due to the
uncertainty created by the sports officials in granting the necessary financial help at the
right time. It is unfortunate that even her award money announced in October 2006 by
the Hon. Sports Minister was granted only in mid-March 2007 and that too only after
much perseverance by the family members and friends.

But for the moment this great admirer of the Indian Grand Master Koneru Humpy doesn't
bother much about the funds. It is the job of her parents to take care of that.

So what is the message she wants to give to the children of Goa and India. She says, "Work hard, sacrifice, concentrate and only then
you will achieve success".

India ’s youngest World champion IvanaFurtado once again created history by retaining the World Girls under-8 chess title. The wonder
girl from Goa topped the chart finishing with a tally of 9 points out of the total 11 rounds.
This is the second successive title for the little girl. Ivana recorded eight victories; two draws and lost only a single match in the entire
tournament that too from her compatriot C H Meghna. She guaranteed her title after accepting a draw offered by Zhansaya Abdumalik
of Kazhakastan in the final round on Wednesday at Antalya in Turkey.

Limca Book of Record holder of becoming the youngest world champion from India, Ivana, emerged sole leader after beating
Mammadzada Gunay of Azerbeijan in her tenth round match on Tuesday. With a total of 8 and half points, she went in to the final round
with high confidence.

She was in terrific form in the decider as her Azerbaijani opponent offered her a draw, which was enough for her to claim the title. By
this victory Ivana now becomes only the third girl after Koneru Humpy and Dronavalli Harika to win more than one world age group title.
This was the 6th international gold medal for the child prodigy in a short span of two-and-half years.

Ivana has been working hard under the guidance of Dronacharya awardee coach Raghunandan Gokhale, who advised her to use the
Pirc Defence for the second consecutive time in two days.

The coach was full of praise for her disciple Ivana, “We can expect even greater things from her in the future,” said Gokhale.

Ivana’s efforts were also lauded by AICF secretary, Mr D V Sundar who said that she had showed her ‘fighting qualities’ to come back
strongly after losing to compatriot C H Meghna during the tournament.

Goa ’s Chief Minister Digamber Kamat also showered praise on Ivana for her stupendous accomplishment. “I am sure Ivana’s triumph
will inspire many others,” said Digambar.

Seven times state champion, Ivana, a class III student, had won the world U-8 title for the first time in Batumi, Georgia in October 2006
and went on to become the youngest Indian world champ in any sport at the age of 7 years 226 days.

World champion Viswanathan Anand was among the first to congratulate Goa’s child prodigy. Anand also hailed the triumph and said
he was delighted that there was one more age group world champion.

“I was in contact with Ivana Furtado and was supposed to have played a simultaneous in Goa but could not make it,” Anand said.
“I am happy for her win and wish her well,” said Anand on the AICF’s official website.

Ivana Furtado Leads Indian Wave at World Youth
Chess Championship
Report from The Hindu
Indians won three silver and three bronze medals in the World youth chess championship that concluded at Porto Carras here on Saturday.
In the girls’ under-12 section, M. Mahalakshmi was defeated by two-time World under-8 champion Ivana Furtado of Goa in the morning. This helped the
Ukrainian win the title on tie-break while Ivana (silver medal) was pushed to second. Mahalakshmi (bronze) and Sunyasakta tied for the third place but the
former won bronze on a better tie-break score.

Rudraksh Parida of Bhubaneswar won against Yakubboev Nodirbek of Uzbekistan in 50 moves with the black pieces in a good knight versus bad bishop
ending to win the silver medal in the Open under-8 section. He scored nine points from eleven games to finish second.
Shiven Khosla of Mumbai finished with a silver medal in the Open under-14 section when he managed to win with the black pieces and reach 8.5 points.
Abhimanyu Puranik of Pune pipped Baskar Gupta of Mumbai in the tie-break to win the bronze medal in the Open under-10 section after the former won and
the latter drew the final round in the morning. Abhimanyu finished on 8.5. Baskar, who was the only undefeated player, took fourth place on same points.
In the tenth round, three Indian girls in the under-12 section stole the limelight. Sunyasakta crushed a Chinese opponent in 17 moves on board fours. Another
Chinese lost to Mahalakshmi on the second board. Mahalakshmi went on to emerge as the sole leader as Ivana Furtado completed the Indian wave by
overcoming the Ukrainian leader with the black pieces on the top board.

That is the spirit. Personally, I am proud to have a person like Reny Pereira
as a fellow alumni of St.Britto High School, Mapusa-Goa, and fellow Patron
member of the Britto's OBA [Alumni Associaition]. The school and OBA
Motto:DEEDS, NOT WORDS. Our actions speak for themselves.

The Goa Government has woken up and approved a proposal to sanction funds to
Ivana Furtado and Bhakti Kulkarni. [See NT report below] There is scope for
more.

On Goanet, Jeevan and I have shared thoughts on how to deal with the funding
of Ivana Maria Furtado's fantastic exploits in Chess with Augusto Pinto
[ad hoc Secretary of Goa Chess], V.M. Prabhudesai [Exec Director of
Sports Authority of Goa], Dr. M.Modasir, Secretary of Sports and
Assistant Secretary Navin Acharya. The CM, Digu-Kaka, has cleared the
file and approved the proposal. A few routine steps to get the
sanction order and issue of the cheque by the Director of Accounts
will ensure that there is some funding. This is good, but definitely
not enough.

Let the Goa's Mine Owners, Business Houses and Sports Foundations come
forward to fund the education, training, diet, travel and stay for
little Ivana and one more person to accompany her for tournaments.
That she is sacrificing her time and energies for the greater glory of
Goa is something that needs acknowledgement. Her parents too have been
supportive ...even though they have to travel by train, time and again
while even middle order managers travel by air.

Perhaps, Goa Sudharop or VXV Foundation or KGWS will take note of

little Ivana if it is not forthcoming from the Business Houses .... or
may be we will have to ask Fundacao Oriente. It has renovated our
non-living heritage like Police HQ, Capela de Monte and Saptakoteshwar
temple. It can help with this living wonder of Ivana. Those who take
pride in calling themselves Goans can dip their nose in the Arabian
Sea and drown their false pride.

Fantastic achievements for the young Ivana.

It is not really surprising to see the treatment meted out to her.
In India sports is cricket and cricket is the sport.
It is the duty of the Chess associations, SAG and Goa Government to
take care of the young Prodigy

CM fulfills promise of more grants to chess association
NT Sports Reporter

Panaji, Dec 1 Chief Minister Mr Digambar Kamat fulfilled the promise

given to clear the dues concerning world champion Ivana Maria Furtado
participation at various championships in the past as well as the
release of prize money to Bhakti Kulkarni for winning the Commonwealth
event as he gave the final approval for the same as a special case.

Mr V M Prabhudesai, SAG's executive director told The Navhind Times,

that Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat had approved the grants to be
released to Goa State Chess Association concerning the expenditure
incurred due to Ivana's participation at the previous championships
which was pending for some time. The file was moved by SAG afresh, it
was approved by sports secretary, Dr Modassir before the Chief
Minister gave the final approval as a special case.

Mr Prabhudesai said that the SAG had prepared the case afresh after
Chief Minister's instructions with assistant secretary Mr Navin
Acharya putting up the fresh proposal and with the higher officials
okaying it on the same day, given the fact that champions who did Goa
proud by winning prestigious events had to be given all support,
encouragament and special attention. Mr Prabhudesai hailed the Chief
Minister for taking up personal interest in the case. The deputy
speaker, Mr Mauvin Godinho had also sought Chief Minister's help to
review the case.

It may be recalled that Ivana's father, Mr Eli Furtado had met Mr

Prabhudesai alongwith Mr Augusto Pinto, acting secretary (chess
association), before he could proceed to Turkey with Ivana for the
World Youth Championship to explain about the financial burden and had
explained that different federations had different procedures
regarding participation and that her case had to be viewed objectively
and differently too.

Dears,

Why should those who are GOOD in Goa migrate to the West? It is
incumbent on the game managers ...in this case the Goa Chess
Association [of which netters Shrikant Barve and Augusto Pinto are a
part currently] .... to raise this issue in public fora. I hope this
is just the beginning of a debate.

An air fare for Ivana, and one person to accompany her, is not asking
for the moon these days. The Govt. of Goa does as much for petty
starlets and mediapersons during IFFI.

Ask Dr.Susanna De Souza, the Director of Sports to do something if

the Chess Association is too impoverished to do it on its own. Ivana
is not too small to draw her attention!

Perhaps, Vijay Mallya can put the Digu-Kaka Government to shame by

giving Free tickets on Kingfisher Air to Ivana Furtado. A fully
clothed little Ivana Furtado emerging from the plane is better
publicity than a bikini-clad Vidisha Pavate spawled below the masthead
of local news papers. Don't you guys and gurlz agree?

Mog asundi.

Mar-16-08 Open Defence: yes someone to watch... when I

was young I was always interested in reading
about Tania Sachdev's results.. newspaper articles
in India used to report how Tania beat computers
at a very young age ... so yes there is plenty of
talent among the young girls in India.. maybe
Indian girls are the strongest in chess ? :-)
Mar-16-08 twinlark: At 9, she's close to being a veteran on
the circuit! Happy birthday, little Ivana.

I'm impressed with how articulate this child is, as
demonstrated in interviews with her.
<Deffi> <maybe Indian girls are the strongest in

India seems to take considerable interest in their
young chess talents, and the way young Furtado
has been feted in Goa is quite extraordinary.

successfully defended her world title in Antalya,
Turkey, becoming the third INDIAN girl after
Koneru Humpy and Dronavalli Harika to win more
than one world age group title.> As I think there
have been other girls to achieve this feat.

Profile
An attacking, diminutive opener, Swapnil Asnodkar has been one of Goa's leading run-getters. The 2007-08 Ranji season was
his best - he scored 640 runs at 71.11 with a personal best of 254 not out, against Railways. However, his feats went largely
unrecognised, with Goa featuring regularly in the Plate League. He shot to prominence in the IPL, where his fearless style
evoked memories of Sri Lanka's Romesh Kaluwitharana and won the praise of his captain Shane Warne.

International Master SP Sethuraman (7.5) of Tamil Nadu and Bhakti Kulkarni (8.5) of Goa led the field
after nine rounds in the Stree Seva Mandir Diamond Jubilee 39th National Junior (U-19) Chess Championship – 2009 at Nehru Stadium, Chennai.
Sethuraman inflicted defending champion Lalith Babu his first defeat today. Close behind the leader at 7.0 points are three IMs Lalith Babu, Shyam Sundar,
Narayanan Srinath along with Arun Karthik, Swapnil Dhopade, Anwesh Upadhyaya and Ramnath Bhuvanesh.
In other interesting games, Anwesh Upadhyaya of Orissa moved into second spot with an upset victory over higher seeded FM Shyam Nikhil of Tamil Nadu.
Top seed Baskaran Adhiban shed further half a point to FIDE Master VAV Rajesh and remained at 6.0 points.
In the Girls section, Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa increased her lead to 1.5 points and looks well set to clinch the National Junior Girls title. With just two rounds

after nine rounds in the Stree Seva Mandir Diamond Jubilee 39th National Junior (U-19) Chess Championship – 2009 at Nehru Stadium, Chennai.

It is official now! Bhakti Kulkarni is Goa's first International Woman Master in chess.

The World Chess Federation (FIDE) at its annual meeting held at Khanty Manski (Russia) awarded Asian Under 18 Girls Champion

Bhakti Kulkarni the prestigious title of International Woman Master (IWM). The Press Officer of the All India Chess Federation Mr.

Arvind Aaron had sent a congratulatory message to Bhakti confirming her title.

"I consider this as not my destination but one of the stepping stones for my future achievements," said Bhakti who is the Brand

Ambassador for the Goa Carbon Ltd.

"I am grateful to Mr.Srinivas Dempo, Goa Carbon Ltd. and my trainer Mr.Raghunandan Gokhale for this achievement," she added.

Bhakti had scored seven norms for International Women Master in the last two years when it was mandatory to score just three norms.

The player must reach the rating of 2200 to be eligible for becoming IWM. Bhakti had crossed that milestone long back and is enjoying

a rating of 2294 with a first position in her age group in the Asian continent.

The newly appointed Vice President of FIDE and Hon Secretary of All India Chess Federation, Mr. D. V. Sundar hailed Bhakti as one of

the leading stars of Indian Chess with bright future. "Bhakti will be one of the leading women players of our country within the next three

years," predicted the veteran organiser.

Bhakti is training at present with Dronacharya Awardee Raghunandan Gokhale in Mumbai before leaving for Halkidiki (Greece) for the

World Youth Championship on 19th October,2010.

"With God's grace and my parents' blessings, I hope to win a medal at the World Youth Championships," said the student of Chowgule

College, Margao.

Bhakti Kulkarni grabs sole lead

Arvind Aaron

Chennai: Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa won round five with a slice of luck against R. Preethi of Madurai in the morning. In the
afternoon Bhakti Kulkarni grabbed her chance in round six in a see-saw game against Shalmali Gagare of Maharashtra to
wrest sole lead in the Stree Seva Mandir National junior girls’ chess championship here on Wednesday.

Bhakti, who had won the 2007 edition of the National juniors in a much stronger field at Nagpur, is leading with full six points
from as many games. Five rounds remain to be played.

Top seed Woman International Master Padmini Rout of Orissa is in close pursuit on 5.5 points after scoring two wins on the
day.

The World girls’ under-18 runner-up R. Preethi had a nightmare losing both games. In the first she was outplaying Bhakti
with the black pieces but blundered a key pawn on move 40 which wrecked her position beyond rescue.

Sacrificing a pawn

Bhakti sacrificed a pawn for attack with the black pieces against former National sub-junior champion Shalmali Gagare of
Shirdi. Shalmali had a draw but missed and lost. Bhakti and Padmini face each other in a round seven clash.
Top seed Baskaran Adhiban of Chennai moved into sole lead in the boys’ section with 5.5 points from six rounds. Adhiban
won a piece against Karthikeyan on move 36 using the tactics of pin while playing what seemed a level ending. Karthikeyan
made things difficult but Adhiban was about to mate with a bishop and knight when the resignation came.

The second and third board clashes ended in draws and none of the four other joint leaders could win. Ramnath Bhuvanesh
held Nitin to a draw by perpetual checks. Shyam Sundar, who landed a big fish in the morning beating the 2008 Asian junior
champion Ashwin Jayaram, drew with the 2008 Indian junior champion Lalith Babu in a level rook and bishop ending.

In the morning session overnight leaders Ramnath Bhuvanesh and Adhiban drew after reaching a drawn rook and minor
piece ending. That allowed M.R. Lalith Babu P. Karthikeyan and Shyam Sundar to join them in the lead on 4.5 points.
