ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF
ACADEMICA SINICA.
Academia Sinica is keen to address the specific interests of our
international colleagues. By establishing ASICC we hope to offer a
dynamic environment and ensure a strong work/life balance.
Baking Program
Those of us who are interested in
baking had a phenomenal opportunity
last month. On October 12th, ASICC
sponsored a baking seminar at one of
our ASICC member’s homes very close
to campus. We had the opportunity to
learn from Marie Klingensmith, one of
New York’s finest pastry chefs (aka
Jonathan and Wendy Evans’ Aunt).
This workshop provided an opportunity
for us to learn some of the fine arts of
baking and at the same time get to know
more individuals in the International
community at Academia Sinica.
The participants were divided into small
groups and each person had an
opportunity to take part in making a
homemade apple pie from scratch. It
was a lot of fun working on this project
together. While the apple pies were

baking, we had the exciting
opportunity to learn how to make a
personal chocolate cake in just 5
minutes in the microwave. Each of us
was given a coffee mug in which we
mixed the ingredients for this cake and
then later microwaved it in this same
mug. Following this we had the
opportunity to taste our personal
chocolate cakes which were simply
delicious. After a time of talking,
tasting each others cakes, and sipping
on hot drinks, the apple pies were
finished baking in the oven. The pies
had a lovely appearance and some
even had special pastry decorations
added to them. Everyone parted with a
generous portion of the apple pie they
helped bake. The pies were absolutely
delicious and much better than any
store bought pie in Taipei.
We left the baking seminar feeling more
confident in our ability to bake. In addition,
we felt more positive and encouraged after
having made new friends in our Academia
Sinica community. Please join us for the next
event as I think you too will find it rewarding.

Prevailing Film in Taiwan

The Golden Horse Awards was founded in 1962 to promote Taiwanese film production and
recognize excellent Taiwanese films and outstanding filmmakers. The name "Golden Horse" is
derived from the names of the two outlying islands of Kinmen and Matsu.

This year, the film festival is from November 4th to November 18th 2010. In addition to
promoting the Taiwanese film industry, the festival committee arranges a series of hard-to-find
classic films to play in Taipei theaters. This year, the committee selected the works of or Éric
Rohmer (03/20/1920 – 01/11/2010, the last of the French New Wave directors) which not only Flora Expo, Taipei
brought French New Wave to the world but also the film noir genre. Date: Dec. 4, 2010

Drink stores have proliferated across
Taiwan lately, they seem to pop up on every
corner. There's a reason for that: Taiwanese
love their drinks and they are really good at
making them, so there is a huge variety.
The traditional shops serve tea - a few
dozen different kinds, almost all locally
produced. Then there are the casual drinks,
which can be almost anything - from cocoa
to the famous bubble milk tea. These cafés
come up with unusual creations on a regular
basis. Finally, there are the shops which
specialize in fruit drinks. These three types
should cover almost everyone's preferences.
