{bmct Kamera.bmp} Archiving a Project
Note
Use the archiving tool to back up your project on a CD. If you copy the project
directly to the CD, all files and directories are write protected. Such a project
cannot be reused unless you have removed the "Write protected" file attribute for
all files and folders of the project.
Introduction
Archiving and retrieving of multiprojects does not differ from the corresponding
functions for projects or libraries (see Archiving a Project and Retrieving a Project).
Archiving a Multiproject
You can store the multiproject in compressed form in an archive file in the same
way as individual projects or libraries. Compressed storage to a hard disk or
transportable storage media (such as a ZIP disk) is possible.
If individual projects of a multiproject are stored on more than one PC in a network,
you must use one of the following programs to archive the multiproject:
• PKZip 4.0
• ARJ32 V3.x
• JAR
Recommendation: The archive operation for a multiproject should take place on
an engineering server.
Procedure
1. Select the multiproject in SIMATIC Manager.
2. Select the following menu command: File > Archive.
3. Click "OK" to save your inputs. This confirms the selected project.
4. In the next dialog box, select the name and path of the archive and the
archiving program (such as PKZip 4.0).
5. Click "OK" to save your inputs.
Retrieving a Multiproject
1. In SIMATIC Manager, select the following menu command: File > Retrieve.
2. In the next dialog box, select the archived multiproject.
3. Click "Open" to save your inputs.
4. In the "Select Destination Directory" dialog box, select the destination directory
where the archive is to be decompressed.
Note
A subdirectory is automatically created in the destination directory you selected.
The subdirectory is given one of the following names:
• Multiproject
• Projects contained in the multiproject
• Libraries or master data library
Once a multiproject is retrieved, all project directories of the multiproject are below
this directory on the same level.
The object is unlinked from the multiproject. The unlinked project retains
textual interconnections, which facilitate linking to the multiproject.
4. Open Windows Explorer, and move the folder of the object.
5. To link the object, select the following menu command:
File > Multiproject > Insert in Multiproject.
The "Insert in Multiproject" dialog box is displayed.
6. In the tree structure, select the object folder.
7. Select the object in the list, and click "OK" to confirm the selection.
The project is once again a component of the multiproject.
Additional Information

Data on OS PCs
OS server PCs or OS client PCs should be backed up with an image since the
configuration data are on the PCS 7 ES (see "Generating an Image" in Data
Backup by Generating an Image File ).
Introduction
SIMATIC BATCH offers several options for backing up and reconstructing project
data.
Notice
While the backup is being created,
operator inputs cannot be executed on the client where the backup is being
performed.
Note
• Only completed batches can be archived.
• Data from long-term archives cannot be used to restore defective batch data or
batch structures.
Image File
An image file is an image of all of the data in a medium (hard disk, logical drives)
that are to be backed up. Data in partitions or on hard disks can be backed up in
an image file. Many of the software packages that can be used to generate image
files also offer data compression.
Boot partitions can also be included in the backup (that is, all PC settings including
the Windows system settings are saved).
For the most part, all data of a PC can be restored in a short timeframe (for
example, 2 GB in approximately 15 minutes) using an image file. In the event of a
fault, the complete PC installation can be restored.
Note
Restoration of data is tied to the use of the same hardware.
Record the following disk settings for the backup file (see Win2000 Computer
Management):
• Partition size
• Formatting of partition or hard disk (for example, NTFS, FAT32)
Requirements:
• Program for generating image files (for example, PowerQuest
DeployCenter™ 5.0)
• Free partitions or memory areas on the hard disks
• Exclusion of authorizations from backup
Note
Recommendation:
If you want to back up a partition of your hard disk, it is recommend that you
remove all authorizations beforehand or exclude them from the backup. In this
way, you can avoid overwriting an authorized system with a backup and destroying
the authorizations.
Notice
Before generating an image file, you must exclude the authorizations from the
backup.
Image files of partitions containing authorizations cannot be restored, and thus the
authorizations are lost.
Restoring Data
• See software instructions (for PowerQuest DeployCenter™ 5.0, for example).
• Detailed instructions can be found in Example for Restoring Image Data
Requirements
Notice
Before generating an image file, you must exclude the authorizations from the
backup.
Image files of partitions containing authorizations cannot be restored, and thus the
authorizations are lost.
Procedure
1. Uninstall the authorizations (see Transferring Authorizations).
Requirements:
Notice
If possible, back up existing authorizations on the partition/hard disk (to another
partition, for example) before restoring image data.
Procedure
1. If a new hard disk was installed, you must repartition the hard disk (see
description of operating system tool fdisk ).
Note
The size and name of the destination drive and source drive of the image file must
match.
9. Click "Browse."
The "Open Image File" dialog box is displayed.
10. Make the following settings for the image file:
- In the "Drives" list, select the drive where the image file is located.
- In the "Folders" list, select the folder where the image file is located.
- In "File Name," select the image file (*.PQI).
11. Select the hard disk/partition where you want to restore the image file data,
and click "Next" to confirm the dialog box.
If the selected destination is occupied, a message is displayed indicating that
the partition will be erased beforehand.
12. The "Restore an Image" dialog box is displayed.
13. The settings entered for the source and destination partition are shown.
14. Click "Finish" to confirm your settings.
The restore operation starts, and the "Image is Being Restored" dialog box is
displayed.
The progress bar for "Overall progress" and "System is copying data" indicate
the degree of data restoration.
"System is copying data" changes to "Checking user data entries" -> "Checking
index structure"
The restore operation is completed when the following message appears in the
"Restore an Image" dialog box:
Image was properly restored. Do you want the results to be
displayed?
15. Select:
- "Yes", if you want to see the results.
- "No", if you do not want to see the results.
The "PowerQuest ImageCenter" dialog box is displayed.
16. Click the button located next to Close.
The program is closed. The DOS command prompt appears on the screen
after a few seconds.
17. Remove the disk from the disk drive.
18. Restart the PC (simultaneously press Crtl-Alt-Del).
19. Install the authorizations.
Note
Be aware that the advantages of using new software versions are also linked to
hardware requirements.
Introduction
In this section, a hardware update refers to operating system changes in SIMATIC
modules (referred to below as an operating system update or firmware update).
An operating system update includes:
• Function upgrades
• Operating system improvements
Recommendation
Perform these updates at regular intervals when convenient (such as during a
scheduled plant shutdown)
Where Can You Obtain the Latest Version of the Operating System?
The latest versions of operating systems can be obtained from your Siemens
representative or on the Internet:

Note on H-CPU
Note
With a fault-tolerant PCS 7 system, a uniform hardware version and the same
firmware version must always be ensured for the H-CPUs.
Notice
With the next steps, all data on your CPU are deleted and cannot be recovered!
1. Switch off the power supply (PS) of the rack (where the CPU is inserted).
2. Insert the prepared memory card into the CPU.
3. Switch on the power supply of the rack.
The operating system is transferred from the memory card to the internal CPU
FLASH EPROM.
During the transfer, all display LEDs on the CPU are illuminated (INTF, EXTF,
FRCE, CRST, RUN, STOP).
After approximately 2 minutes, a slowly flashing STOP LED (=> request for general
reset on the system side) signals completion of the CPU operating system update.
Note
Following the CPU update, an H-CPU starts a self test, which can last several
minutes depending on the memory configuration.
Note
The MPI parameters are retained after a firmware update. Information on creating
new MPI parameters can be found in STEP 7 Help.
More stringent tests of device database files (*.GSE files) are included in STEP 7
Version 5. Syntax errors or illegal operation errors can occur with device database
files (*.GSE files) from an older project.
Improved Help texts are provided for syntax errors and problems with device
database files (*.GSE files) starting with STEP 7 Version 5.1 SP2.
If the following measures are not successful, contact the device manufacturer and
request a new device database file (*.GSE file). The table presents solutions for
some errors:
Error Handling
The GSD(E) CHECKER can be used to perform syntax checks of device database
files (*.GSE files) of PROFIBUS DP slaves.
Example:
An IM 153-2 FO (from the ET 200M system) is being used. A field of numbers with
at least one X is shown on the front.
Example notation:
{bmct Firmware.bmp}
The X refers to the current firmware version (in this case: 4).
Note to Reader on Example
The Process Control System PCS 7; Released PCS 7 Modules contains the
following information:
This indicates that a module "ET 200M IM example" with the firmware version "07"
is released for this version of PCS 7 (version of above-named publication).
Evaluation of example:
• If you want to use the functions of PCS 7 V6.0, you must exchange a module
"ET 200M IM example" with firmware version "4" for a released module.
• Not all functions are available in older modules. Compare the Process Control

Introduction
The message system and diagnostic capability of PCS 7 help you to assess the
state of a plant. You can find information about the PCS 7 message concept in the
following topics:
• PCS 7 Message System
• Origin and Creation of a Message
• Obtaining Information about a Message
The following topic provides a summary of important information to help you
understand the PCS 7 message concept
• Understanding Messages
Basic Terms
Some basic terms used in the PCS 7 message concept are defined in the following
section:
Term Definition
Events Events cause a change to occur in the data status of an automation system. For example,
an event can be that a particular bit is modified in an automation system, either by
modifying a process value or by attaining a specified limit value. Events that are to trigger a
message are defined when the PCS 7 plant is configured.
Messages Messages are triggered by events or by a message frame. PCS 7 has the following
message types:
• Operating messages
• Process messages
• Event messages
• Process control reports and system messages
Errors and In PCS 7, the PCS 7 OS operator control and monitoring system is also used to display
Faults errors and faults in the process and the process control system.
• Error: State of components (objects) that does not cause a fault to occur in the
process (for example, defective display lamps)
• Fault: State of components (objects) that inhibits the process (for example, defective
motor)
Additional Information
You can find additional information about the message system in the following
sources:
• WinCC Information System:
Call path: Start > Simatic > WinCC > WinCC Information System
Folder: System Overview > How WinCC Works >
- Message system of a PCS 7 OS
- Archive system of a PCS 7 OS
- Logging system of a PCS 7 OS
• In the Configuration Manual PCS 7; Operator Station: Settings for the Alarm
System
• In the "SIMATIC BATCH" online help, you will find the following information
under "Batch Data Management":
- Logging batches
- Archiving batches
Notice
Be aware of the accuracy of the message system.
If events are recorded within one scan cycle, they can appear in reverse order in
the message list.
To remedy this situation, refer to the function manual; Process Control System
PCS 7; 10 ms Time Stamping.
Additional Information
You will find information on how to configure messages in the following manuals:
• Configuration manual Process Control System PCS 7; Engineering System
• Configuration manual Process Control System PCS 7; Operator Station
Procedure
1. Enable the message list by clicking the "Activate/Deactivate Autoscroll" button.
2. In the message list, select the message for which you need additional
information.
• Process Messages
Process messages signal process events in the automated process, such as
limit value violations and operating messages.
- Process messages are predefined in the blocks and therefore do not need
to be configured. If necessary, message text and message priority can be
modified in the object properties of the CFC blocks. These modifications
can also be made centrally in the process object list or by means of import
and export operations.
- Event messages are a subgroup of process messages. They report
process variables that are used to evaluate technology components, for
example, a counter for operating hours.
• Operating Messages
Operating messages are generated when process variables are controlled, as
is the case, for example, when a controller switches operating modes.
Operating messages are generated automatically when faceplates prepared by
the libraries are used. When faceplates are configured according to the
programming guide Creating Blocks for PCS 7, operating messages that
comply with PCS 7 can also be used for separate blocks.
PCS 7 places incoming messages in message lists. You can locate a message in
the message list according to the source of the event and the message status.
The messages lists presented below are available by default. You can modify
these standard messages or create additional message lists.
Each component of the PCS 7 overall system can only process a limited number of
messages. If more messages are generated in a component (for example, an AS)
within a particular time frame than the component can process, some of these
messages will be lost. If this occurs, the AS sets an overflow indicator, and the
following event will be signaled in the OS: "NRMS7 Messages Lost."
Notice
If events that trigger messages change status within a brief time span, this can
trigger a message surge. This can obstruct the overview of the state of a plant.
Additional Information
You can prevent a message surge by activating the "Messaging Triggered by
Acknowledgement" function. You will find information on configuration in the
Process Control System PCS 7; Engineering System configuration manual.
In PCS 7 V6, a priority can be assigned to each message, with 0 being the lowest
priority and 16 the highest priority. When a reporting block is newly created, its
messages initially have the lowest priority (0).
You can change the message priority by means of the following:
• Object properties of the block
• Process object view
• Import
In PCS 7 OS, the unacknowledged message with the highest priority is always
displayed in the message row above the overview (if multiple messages have the
same priority, the most recent message is displayed here).
From the message row, the plant operator can switch directly to the process
picture from which the message originated.
In the New list, "Went Out" list, Acknowledged list, and Journal list, the messages
are displayed in the order in which they arrive. You can filter this list according to
priority (see also "Message Lists").
Notice
Message priorities can only be specified if you defined the message number range
as "Unique for Entire CPU."
Additional Information
You will find information on configuration in the Process Control System PCS 7;
Engineering System configuration manual.
Principle
1. Evaluate messages
- Time
- Sequence
- Source
2. Determine location/area of fault
Note
If components without diagnostics capability are used, only the sequential errors
are reported.
Note
Make use of skilled experts if a solution to your problems cannot be found based
on available information - see Preface
3. Define measures
If the plant is in operation, check whether it is necessary to stop.
Notice
• The following actions must be carried out only under observance of applicable
government and plant-specific regulation and ONLY by qualified personnel:
- Configuration changes

Commissioning
Test functions for monitoring the process in the Ψautomation system and for
influencing and resetting parameters, if necessary, are integrated into the
CFC/SFC editor to provide support during commissioning.
Fail-Safe Systems
If a component fails, fail-safe systems switch to the required fail-safe state, thus
preventing any hazards to persons, machines, production, and environment.
Fault-Tolerant System
Automation system (S7 400H) in which all major components are redundant. If a
subsystem fails (for example, following a component failure), the other subsystem
takes over plant automation seamlessly.
