Creative Writing Club Constitution

Preamble:
By the power of the students’ service, activism, and leadership, we hereby join the Clements
Writing Club Community. We pledge to help others improve and experience the joys and
pleasures of writing.

Article I. Name
This organization shall be named as Clements High School Creative Writing Club (CWC).

Article II. Purpose


Section 1: Creative Writing Club is a school-based organization dedicated to encourage young
writers to pursue their passions for the literary world and aid in challenging their
writing skills. The Creative Writing Club’s mission is to provide students with a
positive environment in which they can write, share, and grow.

Article III. Membership


Section 1: An individual is considered a member of the Creative Writing Club if they support
this constitution.
Section 2: Each member should understand the interests and concerns of the group, participate
in each writing exercise, and offer constructive criticism with the aim of developing
the skills of their peers.
Section 3: The expectation of active members is that they contribute writing regularly, attend at
least half of general meetings, and participate in non-meeting activities and events.

Article IV. Organization


Section 1: Leadership of the Creative Writing Club consists of President, Vice President, and
Secretary. All officers participate in the development of meeting agendas.
1. President: Calls meetings and provides structure and order during the meetings.
2. Vice President: Is assigned presidential duties in the absence of the president.
3. Secretary: Responsible for keeping notes at all general meetings, taking roll at
each meeting and keeping account of all active members, dues, receipts, expenses
and income.
4. Associate Editors: Maximum of two students tasked with reading submissions for
the publication.
Section 2: The President and Vice President officer positions are elected bi-annually and
eligible only to rising juniors and rising seniors. The Secretary position is elected
annually, but it is open to any active member. Associate Editors are chosen based
upon merit by the sponsor and elected officers.
Section 3: All officers must sign the Officer’s Contract.
Section 4: To be eligible for elected office, one should be an active member for at least one year
prior to the election, have contributed at least one creative work to the club, and have
attended at least two enrichment events (i.e. readings from published authors).
Section 5: The elected positions shall be decided via open vote by simple majority rules of the
active members, followed by an interview conducted by the current officers and the
sponsor. The election shall take place at the beginning of the school year, or at the
end of a school term for the following school year. There can be no more than three
nominees running for a position.
Section 6: To be considered as an associate editor, one should have contributed at least one
creative work to the club and have attended at least two enrichment events (i.e.
readings from published authors). Position is to be decided upon via interview with
the sponsor and the elected officers prior to or during the beginning of the second
semester of the current school year.
Section 7: Officers may be removed from their positions if they fail to comply with their duties.
Section 8: If an officer resigns or is removed during the school year, the sponsor in consultation
with the remaining officers will appoint a replacement to complete the remainder of
the term of his/her predecessor.
Section 9: The sponsor will be approved annually by the school administration. The sponsor
continues his/her role of providing advice and counsel. There is no limit to the
number of terms he or she may serve.

Article V. Meetings
Section 1: The Creative Writing Club meets bi-weekly for a general meeting. Public notice of
any meeting cancellations must be made at least two days prior to the event.
Section 2: Proper parliamentary procedure will be followed unless the acting president permits
otherwise. All active members except the president have a vote on general business.
The president will vote in the event of a tie.
Section 3: Members are expected to attend meetings. If a member is unable to attend, but
wishes to vote, he or she may give proxy vote in writing to an officer.
