LESSON PLAN FOR DRAMA

Name of the Trainee : Merve GÖKMEN

Age : Adolescent/ Adult

Level : Intermediate to Upper-intermediate

Objectives :

a) for drama :

- to raise students’ imaginations.

- to make the students emphatize others with the help of different
roles given to them.

b) for language item/skills involved :

- to make them prepare for the lesson.

- students can use different vocabulary items.
- there is a communication atmosphere thanks to drama activity so
students can flourish their speaking.

Materials : Role cards, some flashcards, pictures, some dishes, and cups.

Assumptions :

The students may not know how to express their feelings through their
behaviour or actions. To develop to pretending to be people who are involved in
an event and to develop the ability of empathy, the drama activity should be
used. Also it motivates them. This activity may not be suitable for the students
in some circumstances. The teacher must be well-prepared in the event of some
problems occur. If they don’t know how to act out as a couple, the teacher can
give some cues such as some particular behaviours typical to men or women.
Anticipated Problems :

While the students are acting out the drama activity, the teacher may
encounter some problems.
For example, the students may encounter some unknown vocabulary
items in the role cards. In case of such a problem, I may ask the other students to
help their friends, because I reap the benefit of peer error correction or peer
evaluation for my own teaching process.
The teacher may encounter some timing problems during the lesson,
because it is a student-centered lesson. It may take much more time than the
teacher has thought for the activity. To solve such a problem, the teacher may
give as a homework for the second drama activity in the post part.

PRE

Procedure :

The teacher and the students greet each other. Teacher asks some
questions about their real life to warm the class up and to motivate students.
Then, she mentions a real life situation and asks some questions about the
subject. After giving a newspaper title about high divorce rate in modern life,
the teacher asks the reasons of increasing divorce rate. The teacher makes the
students brainstorm. When the students get the idea, the teacher wants them to
try to put themselves in the couple’s shoes. Therefore, the teacher divides the
class into two groups as men and women. After acting out as a couple in modern
life in which women are quiet dominant, the students read the passage to look
from the perspective of men.

Steps :

1. The teacher greets the students and asks some warm-up questions to
motivate them. Then, she asks whether they read newspapers in the
mornings or not. The teacher puts a newspaper title on the board, which is
‘‘Divorce rate is increasing alarmingly all over the world.’’ to attract the
students’ attention to the topic.

2. The teacher shows an interesting picture about a modern life couple to

keep the students’ attention and makes them brainstorm by asking some
reasons for divorcing.
3. She wants them to act as if they were modern life couples. Therefore, she
divides the class into two groups as women and men.

4. After the teacher has distributed the role cards and given the time
duration, the students start to work on it and the teacher monitors the
class.

5. When the time is over, the teacher prepares the classroom for the drama
activity and one of the partners acts out a modern life couple.

6. The teacher gives some feedback to the partners and asks some questions
about the drama activity.

7. Lastly, the teacher gives the handouts to the class to look the marriages
from men’s perspective.

WHILE

Procedure :

The teacher gives handouts to the students. The teacher wants the students to
have a look at the text in a minute to make them get the main idea of the text.
Then, the teacher wants them to do the vocabulary activity. She asks
comprehension questions after the students have read the text carefully. Lastly,
the students work in pairs and discuss a subject concerned with the text.

Steps :

1. The teacher gives the handouts to the classroom after the drama activity,
which is related to a modern life couple, to look the marriages from men’s
perspective.

2. She gives them a minute to read the text quickly to get the main idea of it.

3. The teacher asks a question to the students to realize whether the text is
understood or not.
4. The teacher wants the students to match words and definitions.

5. The teacher says: ‘Read the text again and answer the questions below.
You have three minutes.’

6. The teacher monitors the students.

7. After checking the answers she wants the students to look at the last
activity and says ‘Work in pairs and discuss in what aspects does the
writer think his brothers are new men for two minutes’

8. Finally, she gives them feedback.

POST

Procedure:

After reading the text and doing all the activities in while-part, the teacher
wants the students to prepare the drama activity again, but this time she wants
them to imagine some changes in the couples in the next years and act a couple
living in the next years. After the drama activity, teacher and students talk about
changes of partners and especially men, and finish the lesson.

Steps :

1. After reading the text and doing all the activities, teacher wants them to
think about men in the text.

2. She wants them to act a modern couple out again who live in the next
years.

3. She gives them two minutes to prepare it.

4. She monitors the class.

5. One group acts it out again.

6. Teacher asks some questions about the first and second drama activity.

7. The teacher gives feedback to the students about their participation in the
lesson and she finishes the lesson.

that day. However, your husband works part time, so he has to
go home, care for your baby and cook for the dinner, but he
forgets to add salt to the dishes. Although you say him again and

dishes. So, you go hungry, because you cannot eat without salt.
After a hard day’s work, you get angry with your husband.
