no había mucha frontera porque no había nada cua-

VERBO 08
The 4th edition of VERBO, in 2008, presented 51 projects that reflected the
field of tension that performance art was going through in the first decade of
the 21st century. The event featured photos, installations, performances, videos
and video stills which pointed to the attempt to place the dialogue with the
observer into perspective, by means of the performer’s body. Carnal elements
from traditional iconography were presented in counterpoint to the asepsis of
the white cube in works that suggested dependence, care, and the need for
both commitment and domination. The selection of the works also pointed to
the power associated with the sacred, with the profane, with everyday rou-
tines, and with pain inflicted by man against himself and others. Acts of violence,
daily routines of nutrition, breathing, reproduction and sexuality which, due
to man’s civilized nature, do not appear in public, especially not in situations
where tradition places limits on individual freedom. Moreover, VERBO 2008 also
featured actions created based on questions related to the current status of
performance in art, such as its insertion in institutions and the art market, while
also considering its approximation with other languages, and, for example, its
effectiveness as a critical tool and an instrument of resistance to the prevailing
system. To discuss these questions, Centro Cultural São Paulo, in partnership
with Galeria Vermelho, created the seminar VERBO Conjugado, which was held
in parallel with the actions in the gallery. Divided into four days, the seminar en-
joyed the participation of artists and intellectuals from various areas and dealt
with themes that included Performance and Documentation, Performance and
Restaging, as well as Performance and Cultural Resistance.

In the 5th edition of VERBO, in 2005, Galeria Vermelho entered into alliance
with other institutions from the city of São Paulo to create a week-long, broad-
scope overview of performance art which included actions and installations cre- 0
ated by more than 50 artists from Brazil and other countries, such as Portugal, 9
Spain, Holland and France. There were also releases of artist’s books, magazines
and DVDs, as well as creative workshops in the area of performance, held in
partnership with FUNARTE, along with an educational action that included the
second edition of the VERBO Conjugado seminar, organized in partnership with
Centro Cultural São Paulo. The actions that composed the edition were selected
through a detailed analysis of the 320 projects received by Vermelho, between
the months of December 2008 and March 2009. Of these, ten actions were
chosen, together with another eight projects by invited artists, to compose
the programming for the show’s performances. The 2009 edition also featured
installations by Ícaro Zobar, Cris Bierrenbach, Anne Durez, Marcio Banfi, and
included the release of Marte no 3, coordinated by Portuguese curator Liliana
Coutinho.

The thematic mainspring of VERBO 2010 was the word, both written and spoken.
The curatorial selection for this edition considered more than 200 projects sub-
mitted between the months of December 2009 and March 2010. A total of 11 ac-
tions were chosen, which together with the 16 invited projects composed the 6th
edition of VERBO. This edition also included the 3rd edition of the VERBO Conju-
gado seminar, as well as a laboratory concerned with writing on performance.

The 11th edition of VERBO took place in the month of June and July 2015, and, as
in 2014, featured performances along with an exhibition of photos, videos and in-
stallations. For the selection of the projects we invited Juliana Moraes, who holds
a PhD in dance and serves as a professor at the Centro Universitário Belas Artes
in São Paulo. From a total of 270 projects submitted, 24 were selected, which
together with another 20 invited artists composed the program of this edition.
