1) What is your vision for the Manhattan Young Democrats for 2011? Give some concrete 
examples of initiatives you would like to undertake before the end of the year. 
 
My  vision for MYD in the role of Treasurer this year is to build on the accomplishments of 
our organization and continue to build membership and technical capacity for 2011.  
We had an up and down year in our goal to not only build membership but to get more 
individuals plugged into the organization. A lot of it had to do with how we managed the 
process, but also not having a concrete strategy in place starting in the beginning of the 
year. Immediately in 2011 we have hit the ground running by reaching out to all of our 
members from the 2010 Holiday Party and starting to reach out to those who have not 
renewed (yet). I would like to implement a greater tracking and accountability system 
where all the officers, directors, committee chairs and members are accountable to not only 
bring in new membership but cultivate opportunities for our current members. The 
moment a member joins we need to get them plugged into a committee/director team that 
interests them. I'd like to begin holding bi‐monthly check ins with the development 
director/officers to track what our current membership is involved with, and to begin 
making phone calls to those who may be a member, but have not been involved within the 
organization yet. This year is crucial for us as an organization as we prepare for what will 
undoubtedly be a frenetic 2012 campaign for the presidency.  
 
Another initiative I'd like to take on this year is finding out how to best leverage our 527 
PAC. 90% of the money we spend are on initiatives/events that are aimed at educating our 
membership, providing social events, or technical capacity building for the organization 
(IE. Website hosting, camera, etc.) Given that we are in a position to have an influence on 
the 2012 federal elections and 2013 city elections, we need to clarify our standing as a 527 
and learn how best to use it. To accomplish this, we would need to elicit the assistance of 
the New York County Committee and legal experts.  
 
2) Why do you think you’re a good fit? Please list relevant experiences you would draw 
from and strengths you could bring to the position you are running for.  
 
I firmly believe that the greatest strength I have is my experience this past year serving as 
Treasurer of MYD. It was undoubtedly an up and down year for me personally, and there 
were many successes we had as a team. I am thrilled to reapply to build on these success 
and try new approaches to areas that need improvement.  
 
This may sound a bit obvious, but the Treasurer must be accountable especially with 
physical money. At each of our major fundraisers throughout the year, executive board 
members can attest (and sometimes make fun of) how I watch our cash flow throughout 
the night. I generally never leave ticket tables and always enlist officers/directors to assist 
in triple‐checking all revenue, paying vendors, followed by immediate deposit of funds.  
 
Another strength I have is working extremely well with the other members of the board. I 
have worked very closely with our Events Director and Finance Director throughout the 
year to host successful fundraisers that has allowed our organization to have the financial 
resources needed for our initiatives. The Treasurer as an officer of MYD must also have a 
great working relationship with the entire board and especially his/her fellow officers. I've 
been fortunate enough to work with  the other officers who are three of the most 
intelligent, passionate people I know. I'm sure they could attest to my team‐first and 
supportive attitude throughout the year. 
 
3) Serving on the executive board of MYD is a significant time commitment. How 
committed will you be as a member ‐‐ how would you be able to fit your leadership 
responsibilities within your current schedule? Please list your commitments outside of 
your employment (i.e. leadership positions in other clubs).] 
 
Aside from work, MYD is my only responsibility. I have turned down other extra‐curricular 
activities because of how important this organization is to me. Although I do have a 
demanding job, MYD is an important part of my life. Whenever we do have evening 
meetings, I do leave work early to attend them. Weekends are generally dedicated to MYD 
work where I can balance our checkbook, review transactions, and ensure that we have 
enough money in the bank. Most importantly, MYD, although challenging at times, is fun! 
My colleagues in the organization are like family to me. Having the privilege of serving as 
Treasurer this past year has been one of the best experiences of my life, and one that I will 
continue to make time for.  
 
 
4) What 3 (three) issues would you consider most important to New York? 
The Brennan Center came out with a report a few years ago labeling the New York State 
legislature as the worst legislature in the entire country. I've always found the report to be 
interesting, but never truly understood how true it was since joining MYD this past year. 
There are a number of major government reforms that have to take place to get our 
government/elected officials to get back to why we elected them: to tackle public 
challenges and find solutions. Governor Cuomo has begun working on this with proposing 
an ethics reform bill. I find this to be a great start, and an issue area that MYD can 
educate/activate our membership on.  
 
The second issue I would consider most important to New York is how our government 
gets its fiscal house in order. It is sad to see how New York State can not pass an on time 
budget. When other legislatures do this throughout the country, it is considered to be an 
anomaly. When New York State passes a late budget,  we consider it the norm. We have 
been spending beyond our means for years, under both Republican and Democratic 
leadership. This coupled with government waste has resulted in dramatic budget cuts that 
will have tangible effects on our everyday lives. School budgets are being cut more and 
more. Government layoffs tears apart families as parents struggle to provide for their 
children. The 1 train coming from Harlem now runs every 11 minutes rather than every 4. 
The fiscal decisions of our elected officials effects us all.  
 
The third is one that may seem like its coming from left field (or leaning left field... 
whichever way you prefer!) is Minority and Women‐Owned Business Enterprise 
empowerment in government contracts. There is no greater empowerment tool for the 
disadvantaged than economic opportunities that provide real work with real wages. Both 
New York City and New York State have made loose commitments to provide government 
contracting for M/WBEs, but have failed miserably in following through. Our state and city 
government providing greater opportunity for women and minorities in the awarding of 
contracts would build capacity for these firms/employees to grow and compete for larger 
projects.  
 
5) MYD is a specialized political group. (We’re young and left leaning). How can this be 
used effectively to implement change using social media?  
Granted that although I am Treasurer, I cannot stress enough how important our social 
media expertise is to the growth of our membership and organization as a whole. One of 
the first initiatives I made upon becoming treasurer was to invest funds in website 
hosting/domain renewal for five years. This would ensure that regardless of the 
organization's fiscal standing in the years to come, we would always have the ability to use 
our website/social media as the engine of MYD. Our online campaigns, constant 
facebook/twitter updates, and New York Times noted blog are all major tools in expanding 
our base and our face in New York State/City. It can (and is currently) being used 
effectively to spread our message to thousands of people every year.  
 
6) (Optional) Is there anything else you think the Executive Board should know about you 
before reviewing you application?   
This may sound sappy, but the members of MYD are my family. I would love to continue to 
support this organization that I love through the role of Treasurer.
