Sermon Outline 1

Film Title: First Knight

Clip Name: I Will Fight

Main Idea: Our Enemy Tries To Scare Us Into Looking Away From His Crimes

Scene Setup: Prince Malagant once sat at King Arthur's Round Table of Knights. But
pride and rebellion have led him to create his own army, which preys on the poor and
the weak. When Arthur brings his new bride-to-be from her small town of Leonesse to
Camelot, Malagant shows up for a parley.

Application: Most Christians live in a church culture that de-emphasizes the

conversation about our own spiritual warfare. If the topic is addressed, we are
encouraged to deal with the sin in our life as if it is optional. Rarely do we see the
adversary of our soul portrayed as someone who will not stop until he has taken
everything. This battle with sin may look like we can negotiate and give a little area
of our life to this enemy, but that would be a terrible mistake.

Jesus teaches that our enemy is mobile, like a lion looking for prey, and that he
comes only to kill, steal and destroy. Malagant represents this adversary. Notice that
Malagant, knowing he cannot destroy the entire kingdom of Camelot, negotiates for a
piece. The enemy of our own soul will come and look for the areas of our life that he
can control. As he establishes his presence in these seemingly outlying areas he then
breaks his treaty and expands his battle to attempt win the entire area. Arthur
understands that you cannot give this kind of enemy even a small part of your life.
Arthur resists the offer of peaceful co-existence.

Arthur is right when he stands his ground and fights for his kingdom. His adversary
warns him that if he doesn't capitulate, he is going to have to fight to keep his
inheritance. But Arthur is wise. "There is a peace that can only be found on the other
side of war," Arthur reluctantly admits. Arthur knows that our lives will have an
element of battle if we want to experience genuine peace. Sin is not slack. Sin is
crouching at your door waiting to consume you. Just like Malagant in this clip, once
you give it an inch you can see that it is only a matter of time until it tries to take the
whole. Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee. That is our strategy and God's
promise.

Correlating Scriptures:

1. John 10:10 (New King James Version) 10 The thief does not come except to steal,
and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they
may have it more abundantly.
2. Genesis 4:7 (New King James Version) 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted?
And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you
should rule over it."

3. James 4:7 (New King James Version) 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil
and he will flee from you.

Alternative Idea(s):

1. Malagant is almost a perfect representation of Satan. Once a member of the

inner council, he wanted more power and left to pursue it. Now he comes and
goes out of the presence of the King using the King's standards of
righteousness to politic. He roars like a lion, but he does not frighten the King.
He pushes his negotiations with threats but there is no fear for those who
oppose him. But the King isn't naive. The way this world is established there will
be a need to meet this enemy on the battlefield sooner or later. It is the lust for
power that will create the war. It is Arthur's standard of righteousness that will
cause him to step up and defend the poor and the weak from this tyrant's evil
designs.
2. "There are laws that enslave men and laws that set them free. Either what we
hold to be right and good and true is right and good and true for all mankind
Under God, or we are just another robber tribe." Arthur has built Camelot to
extend the Kingdom of God. He has established laws that men are not allowed
to break, but those laws are designed to set men free and protect them. Notice
Arthur's core values – right, good and true. These are the values of God's
kingdom. As we develop our own small kingdom, whether it be a new ministry,
a new business or a new family let us remember that we build this in order to
build a little bit of planet earth for the Kingdom of God. We expand the Kingdom
using Kingdom values and we realize we are just in power for a time, and that
power is given to us by God to serve others in need.
