Joel Magalnick Editor, JTNews
Rep. Reuven Carlyle (D–36th) had one word for this
legislative session as he prepared for its opening: Sober.
“There’s a real sense of sobriety and real humility about
the scale of the challenge we face,” Carlyle, a member of
the state’s Jewish delegation, told JTNews the Friday before
the Washington State legislature began its annual session
on Jan. 10. “The fundamental systems issue we face is that
in very difficult times, the demand on public service sky-
rockets at the very moment the perfect storm kicks in with
a dramatic drop in revenues.”

Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, who lobbies on behalf
of the state’s Jewish nonprofit organizations, said legisla-
tors will be “wrestling with how to make decisions that they
personally find unconscionable, but because there are few
options left are going to have to be made.”
The state’s government faces yet another revenue short-
fall — this one to the tune of about $4.6 billion over the

JFS gets ready to build

Joel Magalnick Editor, JTNews
In some ways, the design of Jewish
Family Service’s new addition could be
looked upon as a contradiction: Creating
wide-open spaces allows for more privacy.
But as the machines move in next month
and begin the actual construction of a
dream that has been years in the making,
the finished product will do exactly that.
“We’re building a structure so that cli-
ents can come in and feel welcomed, but
also have the dignity and privacy they
need, because so many of the services we
offer are confidential,” said Dianne Loeb,
JFS’s board president.
When the $9 million, 19,000-square-
foot addition to JFS’s current Danz build-
ing in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood
is complete, the centerpiece of the design
will be an open staircase that takes visi-
tors and staff between the new building’s
two floors.
The stairway is “community-oriented,
meant for social interaction,” according
to Claudia Berman, JFS’s chief operating Weinstein Architects and Urban Designers

“This building represents our ability to
serve more clients better,” Loeb said. “It’s
not any kind of a project just for a project’s
sake, it’s a way we can do better service.”
Two Eastside offices that serve refugee
and immigrant populations will remain in
their locations.
The economic downturn has played a
part in this expansion’s design, and the past
month has shown that it is playing a part
in funding the project. JFS applied for a
$2.3 million grant from the State of Wash-

But something is missing. Unrepresented in this

book, which is only surprising because it’s supposed to
be a journalistic work, is anyone from the large factory
farms he constantly berates — the Tysons, the Perdues,
the Jimmy Deans — to give their side of the story. It’s
not for lack of trying, Foer insists, and the testimony
recorded both by him and sources he tracked down offer
damning evidence against their practices, a rundown of
which I’ll give you here:
Factory farms: Bad.
Non-factory farms: Almost non-existent, but the ones
that remain are less bad.
Avoiding meat altogether: Best, but vegetarians
shouldn’t be smug about it; they need to work to
keep their personal choices just personal. And: “Never,
absolutely never, emphasize that virtually all of the
time one’s choice is between cruelty and ecological
destruction, and ceasing to eat animals.”
But emphasizing is exactly what Eating Animals
does. Foer wields his proselytizations like a knocker,
the high-pressure steel bolt that when used properly
knocks a cow senseless (think Javier Bardem in No Coun-
try for Old Men) before it enters the death machine. It’s
not often used properly, as we’re graphically told. But
he also tries to tread more lightly than the malformed
chick born in the stories-high, football-field-long, overly
crowded and lighted warehouses that call themselves
chicken coops these days.
That’s what annoyed me most about this book. I
first picked it up during Thanksgiving, and I just couldn’t
