Education Options

by: Pat Brill

f you’ve been thinking about going back to Some of the options to consider when

more options than you realize. Colleges and • Two-year colleges

Education

In addition, there are interior design schools,

art colleges, and culinary schools that you
can choose from. These are a few of the many
specialized schools and colleges out there
where you can earn a certification or degree
in the specific discipline you’re interested in.

Most local colleges, universities, and technical schools now offer

classes in the evenings to make it easier for adult students to
attend classes. Many of them offer online courses as well, so
it’s possible for you to attend classes and earn a degree from
them without ever setting foot in a classroom.

“Virtual” schools are one of the hottest trends going for moms
who want to go back to school, but are busy with jobs and
families. These virtual schools, otherwise known as distance
learning institutes and online universities, have gained amazing
popularity in the last five years and are now recognized as
legitimate sources for getting a college degree by some of their
toughest critics.

One benefit of attending classes at a local college or technical

school is that you get to take full advantage of the classroom
setting. You’ll have peers to turn to for advice, and even
homework assignment help. This student community can be very
good for you if you haven’t set foot in a classroom for many
years, as you won’t feel isolated and alone in your scholastic
pursuits.

However, online colleges offer you the advantage of being able

to attend classes whenever it suits your schedule. They’re also
quite flexible in allowing you as much time or as little as you
need to turn in assignments and meet the course requirements.
This allows you to finish up a certification program or earn a
degree much more quickly than you can in a traditional school
setting, where the quarter or semester system is rigidly enforced.

To find the best back-to-school option for you, check out the
web. You can research a multitude of distance learning programs
to find one that offers a degree or certification for exactly the
profession you want. You can also find out everything you need
to know about your local colleges and universities online. Most
have their own informative websites. So if you’re thinking about
going back to school, don’t waste another second. Hit the
Superhighway and start doing your homework—it’ll be excellent
practice for when you do become a student.

and products you just can’t make it in this business,” said June.

When asked about the latest trends in hair styles for women, men
and kids June said, “The bed head look is in for young women,
the shag is also. The shag is versatile where it can be long or
short. The older generation still loves to have their hair rolled
every week with every hair in place. Foiling is very popular with
the younger women; blonde on blonde, dark on blonde, they love
this technique.” Foiling is a very creative way to add color and
highlights to your hair. The foiling technique allows the stylist to
place the hair in sections, which in turn allows the stylist to use
several different colors in one process. The size of the color streak
can also be controlled using foiling. “Men are beginning to let

Education

You Are Never Too Old To

Go Back To School. by: Kay Jones

You may have been out of school for 10, 15,

or more years and you feel that you will not
do well because you have lost touch.
What you should realize is that now is the perfect time to go
back to school. Why, because you have a desire. In our teenage
years and young adult years our mind may not have been as
settled as it is now. We were more than likely focused on the
pleasures we thought life could bring. As we get older we tend
to say, “If I knew then what I know now, I would have done this
or that”. Now that we are older, we know what is best for us.
Therefore, we know the importance of a good education. Most
good paying jobs will not consider an application or resume if a
certain level of education is not listed.

The most important reason you should go back to school is

because once you get your education, it is yours and no one can
take it from you. Learning is fun, especially when you find
something you are interested in and when you have a desire to
achieve what you think is impossible. Achieving a higher
education will put you in positions you never thought of. A little
knowledge here, a little knowledge there and you will be on
your way to heights unimaginable. You may want to start your
own business, or partner with a fellow classmate. There is no
limit to what a good education will bring. Think positive and
remember if there is a will, there is a way. If you will to get a
better job, if you will to increase you knowledge, if you will to
excel, Education is the way. There is no need to be intimidated
by the number of younger students that will be in the classes
with you. They may be willing to help you in certain areas.

Why am I so adamant about going back to school and getting

Self

Thinking Outside of the Tofu Container By Brenda Shropshire B.S. M. Ed.

Healthy Solutionz™ Quote of the Month

“ The longer you wait to decide what you want to do, the more time you’re wasting. It’s
up to you to want something so badly that your passion shows through in your
actions. Your actions, not your words, will do the shouting for you.

– Derek Jeter, baseball player

ne thing is for sure, there is a strong, connection between self-

image (How valuable am I?) and the way women see their bodies
(How fat am I?) in our culture today. If I had to venture to guess,
(no formal research done here) I would say that 90% of American
females, over 13 years of age, are constantly scrutinizing their
body shape and size-adding up the results and translating the
outcome into a formula for measuring self-worth. Comments we make in our heads
such as: I look so fat in these jeans. Why can’t I look like her? Why did I just eat that?!
Are the kinds of thoughts that torment many on a daily basis. If you added up all the
seconds, minutes, hours, weeks, and years women spend practicing negative self-
talk, you would, most likely, end up with a total that would exceed the amount of time
it takes to walk no, crawl across the country and back.

So what’s the problem? Why do we beat ourselves up? (Somebody call the social
workers and put an end to the abuse!) and do little to make it happen. You can call it
stress or frustration but it all translates into feelings of self-disappointment because
the goal has been set, and nothing is being done to implement it.

Why bother holding onto an internal value or setting a personal goal, if you aren’t
going to make an effort toward living a life that is congruent with what is important to
you? Without getting all “Freudian”, simply stated: You are living a life of discrepancy
unless you put actions into place that are inline with your internal beliefs which leads
to on-going emotional abuse, carried out by you.

Decide today that you will:

1) Be kind to yourself. Stop beating yourself up. Forgive
yourself for past failed attempts to stay on a healthy journey
of sensible eating and sensible exercise.

2) Recognize that you must not only state your goals but align
your life with daily actions that are inline with your goals.

3) Reevaluate your personal mission and values and either let

them go or make the happen. Decide who you are, not by
your thoughts, but by your actions.

You are living a life of discrepancy Brenda Shropshire holds a Bachelors Degree in Health and in Physical Educa-
tion as well as a Master’s Degree in Education. She is a Speaker, Freelance

Dr. McKee Certified Invisalign® Orthodontist

By Lisa Parrott • Photos York’s Studio

s an adult, have you ever thought, ‘I

would like to have my teeth
straightened, but I don’t want those
metal braces in my mouth.’ Invisalign®
allows you to have those perfectly
straight teeth, without anyone knowing
you are wearing braces. Invisalign® is
one of the hottest new ways for older
teens and adults to straighten their teeth.
Dr. Michael McKee has been trained and certified in the use
of the Invisalign® aligners. Dr. McKee will make an impression

of your teeth and precisely customize a series of aligners just

for you. Your teeth move gradually (millimeters) until you have
achieved the desired results.

Once placed over your teeth, the aligners are virtually invisible.
Invisalign® also offers a little more comfort than traditional
braces. The aligners are removable for meals or for several hours
of socializing. Dr. McKee said, “People love that you can’t see
the aligners. Invisalign® fits very precisely to the teeth. There
are a number of aligners, each one a little tighter than the one
before. We change them on a certain schedule, usually every
four to six weeks. Although they are removable, it is critical
that you are very consistent in wearing the aligners in order to
achieve the desired results.”

For children and younger teens, the good news is that

orthodontists are able to take more preventative measures than
in the past. Dr. McKee said, “The philosophy has changed in
the past few years. As with medicine, the concentration in
orthodontics is in more prevention. We’re beginning to see
children at a much earlier age, around five to six years old. This
is usually the time when the first permanent teeth are coming
in. It is then that you can get a better idea of what is coming. If
we see something, we can intervene at an earlier age. Sometimes
we can fix a little problem in order to lessen or eliminate a bigger
problem later on in their life.”

For your child, getting braces is much more comfortable than

in the past. Braces are much smaller, easier to put on and easier
to take care of. The metal wires are much more flexible than in
the past making them more comfortable. You may be concerned
that getting braces for you or your child is too expensive, but
Dr. McKee offers financing with different payment plans.

Dr. McKee is very proud of his staff, all of whom have over ten
years of experience. He said, “We work as a team. Everyone
works well together. I am very proud of their technical skills,
but I am also proud of how much they care about our patients.
We strive to know everyone personally and to make them feel
comfortable because that is how we would want to be treated.”

Dr. McKee is located at 1628C Memorial Drive, Burlington.
