Master Craftsman Develops Custom Seat Business
From Humble Beginnings By Wendy Pitlick
A passion for motorcycles and working with his hands
is what made Dan Ballard’s upholstery hobby go out
of control.
Of course, it isn’t what Ballard wanted at the time
— as the then-20 year old dreamed of becoming
a famous DJ for radio or television. But a job as a
novice upholsterer, a sewing machine he begrudg-
ingly purchased with his dad’s encouragement, and a
fiery passion for his work served as the catalysts for
developing this custom seat master. This year Bal-
lard celebrates 20 years in the custom seat business
with Bitchn Stitchn Inc., of Lakewood, Colo., along
with his 40th birthday. Ballard’s is a brand that rep-
resents quality and comfort for street and off-road
motorcycles.
Twenty years ago Dan discovered his love for work-
ing with his hands when he fell on hard times and
found himself begging for a job at a local upholstery
shop. As a novice upholsterer, he learned how to cre-
ate works of art on the inside of automobiles.
It was shortly after he got the job when his dad en-
couraged him to buy a sewing machine, an idea Dan
thought would be good only if every girl in Colorado
needed her dress hemmed.
That sewing machine proved prophetic, and while
Ballard didn’t get the chance to hem all the girls’
dresses, he does have a long line of customers
waiting for custom seats. His first upholstery job, a
1969 Camaro, was the first automobile Ballard uphol-
stered. After that, the developing master decided to Dan Ballard
stick with two wheels. At about the same time Ballard working at
discovered his new hobby, motorcycle styles started his 20-yer old
changing and the tires started to get larger. But mo-

torcycle seats did not change with the new designs.
Couple that with Ballard’s passion for motorcycles as
he fell in love with his first Harley, and Ballard decided
to start marketing his trade and build a temporary
business.
With each new job, Dan would drag his tools out
of his apartment and single-car garage to perform
the fitting work in his driveway. He would then take
the seat inside for finishing. But as business grew,
his workspace seemed to shrink, and it wasn’t long
before Ballard moved his shop to Lakewood. There
he hired Brian Backes, who grew up in the industry
and whose upholstering credo includes a shop that
catered to motor head celebrities such as Jay Leno;
and Chris Bellum, who at 18 is a novice upholsterer
himself but who Ballard said is “light years” ahead of
where he was when he first started.
It’s a trio made for riding, and the company has
proven that over and over again. So far Ballard and

Sin City Sizzling 10th Year

Las Vegas Anniversary

At 17 years of age, I sold enough Kirby vacuum

bucks (part of my award), I spent 2 nights in “The

T
city that never sleeps” stayed at the luxurious Sahara
Hotel, ate gourmet meals and took in a show featur-
ing Las Vegas icon Wayne Newton. Mesmerized by
the incredible casinos and bright lights lining the strip,
I didn’t want to sleep for fear I might miss something.
I was excited as I prepared for our trip to attend Full
Throttle Event’s 10th Annual Las Vegas BikeFest
September 30 - October 3rd. Although I have been
back to Vegas since that first time, it had been more
than 15 years; the transformation of “Sin City” had
only begun. All the excitement of Las Vegas, a bike
rally and room rates as low as $29/night? How much
better can it get?
The schedule and layout gave participants opportu-
nities to check out the many quality vendors and a Guinness Book of World Records “World’s Heaviest Flag” Weighing over 7
broad array of entertainment at many venues; horny tons, measuring 25 ft tall and 37 ft, 8 in. long, made of 201 lengths of chain

It hit a sizzling 103 degrees the day we arrived, but
we didn’t need to be anywhere until later that eve-
ning. It was about 98 degrees when we checked in at
The Cashman Center, the hub for the 4-day celebra-
tion. Vendor Village occupied space both inside the
building and on the blacktop. Thursday night included
a welcome party in the outdoor pavilion, free food
and drinks and a special appearance by Richmond
Branscombe & The Renegade Posse.
A flurry of activities throughout the 4 days took place
primarily at the Cashman Center. Other venues in-
cluded the Harley-Davidson Café, Arlen Ness’s
dealership, the Sahara and Golden Nugget hotels.
The “Nugget” located downtown on Fremont Street
is at the heart of the Fremont Street Experience, a
5-block entertainment complex draped in a 1500-foot
long video screen 90 feet off the ground, with cho-
reographed light and sound shows about every hour.
It’s a carnival like atmosphere, upbeat, with free con-
certs, costumed people everywhere and good deals
for the budget-minded travelers.
There were poker runs for big money, a poker walk,
slot tournaments, poker tournaments, a custom bike Artistry in Iron Winner
show, bike giveaways, world’s strongest biker con-
test, Miss Las Vegas and more. Concerts throughout
the weekend included a Las Vegas favorite all female
rock band, Dangerous Curves. The 10-year anniver-
sary party sponsored the Sahara, host hotel for Las
Vegas BikeFest, took place poolside. It was hilarious
to watch bikini clad ladies racing big wheels around
the pool competing for some cash and free lodging.
The ever-popular Hogs and Heifers bar was over-
flowing Friday night, streets jam packed with bikes
with a continuous line of bikers waiting to get in.
Artistry in Iron Master Builders Championship and the
custom bike show took place at the Cashman Center.

Lehman Trikes Reveals “Concept Trike” at Kawasaki Dealer

Lehman Trikes unveiled their latest trike concept at the Kawasaki Dealer Meet-
ing October 5-6 in Las Vegas, NV. The new
trike conversion, based upon the Kawasaki
Vulcan 900, was on display for dealers to
view and share their comments with Kawa-
saki and Lehman Trikes.
”We are thrilled to have this opportunity to
solicit feedback from Kawasaki’s dealer net-
work,” stated Ken Hines, President and CEO
of Lehman Trikes. “The Vulcan 900 has proven itself as an outstanding motor-
cycle in the below 1000 cc cruiser category and serves as an excellent founda-
tion for a trike that would raise the bar in its class for performance and value.”
The new trike is being explored as Lehman’s next entry-level product for the
rapidly expanding three-wheel segment of the motorcycle market.
