Introduction
This is a guide for setting up a complete, standalone 64bit MOSS 2007 virtual development environment
using Windows 2003 64 bit Standard Edition, SQL Server 2005 64 bit Enterprise Edition and VMWare Server
1.0.4/VMWare Workstation 6.0.
Enabling 64‐bit Guest OS Support on your Motherboard (if required)
Many motherboards ship with the Intel 64‐bit Virtualisation Technology (VT) switched off by default. You
will need to enable this before you fire up your new Virtual Machine. Reboot your PC, press [Del] or [F2] to
enter the BIOS, then look for the Virtualisation Support option in the menu. Make sure this is set to ON.
Creating the Virtual Machine
This section assumes you are using VMWare Server 1.04 to create the virtual machine. You may have
similar but divergent screens for VMWare Workstation 6.0 (e.g. you won’t have ability to control power
on/off operations).
Open VMWare Server and go to File > New Virtual Machine
Choose Custom and Click Next.
Select Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition and Click Next
Virtual Machine Name: MossDev64Base
Location: D:\Virtual Machines\Templates\MossDev64Base
Click Next
Uncheck Make this virtual machine private and click Next
.
Enter 80GB as the maximum capacity of the virtual disk, uncheck all checkboxes and click Next
Name the VM MossDev64Base and click next.
Confirm and await machine creation.
Editing the Virtual Machine Settings
Click the edit virtual machine settings link and make sure the cd‐rom is set to boot from the Windows 2003
x64 R2 Standard Edition CD.
If using VMWare Server (not workstation) Go to Options > Startup/Shutdown and ensure the ‘Power on
virtual machine’ is selected in the first drop down and ‘Shut down guest operating system’ in the second.
Building Windows
Star the virtual machine and the windows boot screen should appear
Follow the prompts as they appear.
• Enter ‐ To agree
• F8 ‐ To agree
• C – To create partition
• Return – To accept maximum partition size available
• Return – To install
• Return – To format partition using NTFS file system
Custom the regional settings for New Zealand
Enter [Organisation Name] for both Name and Organization and click Next.
Enter the VLK product key and click Next
Enter licensing appropriately and click Next
Enter the computer name as Win2K3Std64Base and use [yourpassword] as the password.
Change the date and time settings to the Auckland, Wellington time zone.
Accept the Typical settings for the Networking Settings dialogue box.
Assign the machine to a VMTEMPLATES workgroup, do not attach to a domain at this stage.
Click Finish and wait for the system to reboot
Logon as Administrator
Configuring Windows

to select and install optional updates.
As well as any High Priority Updates, select ‘Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 x64’ and ‘Remote Desktop
Connection’ from the list of optional software updates.
Once installed, reboot and go to Microsoft update and apply any additional patches. Complete this cycle
until no high priority patches are required to be installed.
Go to Internet Services Management and select the Web Service Extensions folder and right click the
ASP.Net v2.0.507.27 Web Service Extension and select Allow.
Enable remote connections via Start > Control Panel > System > Remote.
Make sure Windows Firewall is turned off via Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall.

IIS is switched into 64 bit mode only.
1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
2. Type the following command to disable the 32‐bit mode:
cscript %SYSTEMDRIVE%\inetpub\adminscripts\adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 0
3. Type the following command to install the version of ASP.NET 2.0 and to install the script maps at
the IIS root and under:

Assigning Site Collection Admin Permissions
By default the account you use for setup ([domain]/MossSetup) will have become a farm administrator and
will be assigned as a site collection administrator on the site collections (SSP and My Sites) you have just
set up.
Additionally, Local Administrators of a box (e.g. [domain]/MossDevelopers) will have been assigned as
Farm Administrators which grants access to the SP Admin site.
However, Farm Administrators can’t administer everything in the farm, namely site collections, unless they
are explicitly assigned as site collection administrators. You will need to add users to the Site Collection
Administrator list manually:
If the SharePoint Central Administration website isn’t already open, select Start > Administrative Tools >
SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration, then click the SharedServices1 link in the left hand menu panel:
Click the Site Actions button, then select Site Settings:
Click the Site Collection Administrators link under Users and Permissions:
Add any necessary users to the Site Collection Administrators list. Note – you can only add Active Directory
(AD) users to this list, not AD groups. So you will need to add all your users in the group
[domain]/MossDevelopers one at a time.
Outgoing Email Configuration
If the SharePoint Central Administration website isn’t already open, select Start > Administrative Tools >
SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration, click the Operations tab:
On the Operations page, click the Outgoing e-mail settings link, located below the Topology and Services
heading:
On the Outgoing E-mail Settings page, enter the following information, and then click the OK button:
Outbound SMTP server: [smpt server]
From address: [from email]
Reply-to address: [to email]
Check Search Services and Event Log
Ensure Office SharePoint Services Search and Windows SharePoint Services Search are started and set to
start automatically via Start > Administrative Tools > Services.
Check event log for any MOSS/WSS Errors and remedy accordingly if required. There are likely to be some
DCOM errors relating to the MossFarm domain account under System in the Event Viewer. In either case,
apply the following fix to make sure these errors do not occur in the future.
1) Start ‐‐> Administrative Tools ‐‐>Component Services
2) Double‐click Component Services ‐‐> Computers ‐‐> My Computer ‐‐>DCOM Config
3) Find the OSearch service
4) Right Click OSearch and select properties
5) Select the Security Tab
6) Launch and Activation Permissions, Access Permissions, and Configuration
Permissions should be set to Customize
7) Click edit under Launch And Activation Permissions
8) The following permissions should be added as follows:
• SharePoint Search Service Account ([domain]\MossSspSearch) ‐ local launch, local activation
• Farm Service Account ([domain]\MossFarm) ‐ local launch, local activation
• SharePoint SSP Service Account ([domain]\MossSspService) ‐ local launch, local activation
• wss_admin_wpg ‐ local launch, local activation
• wss_wpg ‐ local lauch launch, local activation
9) Click edit under Access Permissions
10) The following permissions should be added as follows:
• SharePoint Search Service Account ([domain]\MossSspSearch) – local access
• Farm Service Account ([domain]\MossFarm) ‐ local access
• SharePoint SSP Service Account ([domain]\MossSspService) – local access
• wss_admin_wpg ‐ local access
• wss_wpg ‐ local access
11) Click edit under Configuration Permissions
12) The following permissions should be added as follows:
• SharePoint Search Service Account ([domain]\MossSspSearch) – full control
• SharePoint SSP Service Account ([domain]\MossSspService) – full control
• Farm Service Account ([domain]\MossFarm) – full control
• WSS_ADMIN_WPG ‐ full control
13) Go to Step 3 and repeat for IIS WAMREG admin service (or any other service that is causing problems)
No other errors should be present within the Event Log, do not proceed if there are errors.
Backup
You now have a complete 64 bit Moss Development environment
Please put a copy of the VM in a safe place!
