O título desta obra é retirado de um excerto de uma quadra popular de Fernando Pessoa. A citação completa é "Quando passa uma nuvem, passa uma sombra também". Nesta obra
acompanhando a nuvem carregada de sentidos aqui representada pelo intérprete, passa uma sombra também, neste caso o dispositivo electrónico que, tal qual uma sombra, também
pode conter toda uma série de sentidos, graus de autonomia, relações e correlações, reagindo, comentando, alargando e, porque não, contrariando...
Dedicada com toda a amizade ao Manuel Jerónimo.

Notas para a interpretação de « …uma sombra também. »

Generalidades
A parte electrónica de « …uma sombra também. » consiste numa aplicação que irá gerar em “tempo
real” os acontecimentos musicais que acompanham a parte do clarinete. A cada sequência de
acontecimentos corresponde um número indicado na partitura.
O controlo desta aplicação é feito pelo intérprete (ou um assistente musical) e consiste no
desencadear de sequências de acontecimentos, quer através de um pedal via protocolo MIDI, quer
accionando um botão presente no ecrã do computador.

Para iniciar a parte electrónica

1. Lançar a aplicação “SOMBRA_TAMBEM_v2.app”
Em seguida (ver a Figura 1):
2. Ligar o áudio: o botão vermelho deve ficar verde como na Figura 1.
3. Os acontecimentos estão a “zero”. Em cada momento da partitura em que aparece um
número, premir o “bang” (o círculo vermelho) e automaticamente aparece esse acontecimento.
4. No final, desligar o áudio (o botão verde deverá voltar a vermelho).

Desencadear acontecimentos via MIDI

Para configurar o interface MIDI, dever-se-á conectar um aparelho MIDI ao computador.
Em seguida (ver Figura 2) :
1. Abrir a janela de parametrização do interface MIDI
2. Escolher uma porta para interface MIDI
3. Escolher o tipo de controlador (normalmente o sustain pedal ou controlador 64)
Quando é premido o pedal, é produzido o valor 127. Este é o valor utilizado para desencadear um
bang que irá fazer avançar um contador e activar os acontecimentos correspondentes.

Observações Finais
Pode-se regular a intensidade do som directo (volume de som dos acontecimentos) e da
reverberação (volume de som da reverberação). Atenção para não exagerar na presença da
reverberação.

Durante os ensaios, em caso de necessidade de começar a partir de um dado ponto, podem-se

utilizar os controlos da janela “Event Control” (o número em baixo do círculo vermelho indica a
localização).

Para reiniciar todos os valores, premir o botão “Reset All”.

Program Notes

The title of this work is taken from an excerpt of popular verses from Fernando Pessoa. The complete quotation is “When a cloud passes, it also passes a shadow”. In this work,
accompanying a cloud full of meanings here represented by the performer, there is also a shadow, the electronic part that contains also a whole series of directions, degrees of autonomy,
relationships and correlations, reacting, commenting, widening and, why not, challenging…
In all the friendship to Manuel Jerónimo.

The present revision of this work consists on the transfer of the audio device production to the Max environment and the improvement of the documentation. My gratitude to Virginia
Figueiredo for the encouragement to accomplish this version.

Notes for the performance of « …uma sombra também. »

Generalities
The electronic part of « …uma sombra também. » consists of an application that will generate the
musical events that accompany the part of the clarinet in “real time”. Each sequence of events
corresponds to the number indicated in the score.
This application is controlled by the performer (or a musical assistant). Sequences of events are
triggered through a foot-pedal through MIDI protocol, or clicking a button in the screen of the
computer.
Starting up the electronic part
1. Launch the application “SOMBRA_TAMBEM_v2.app”
Once it is launched do the following (see Figure 1):
2. Switch on audio: the red button must become green as shown in Figure 1.
3. The events are set to “zero”. On each moment in the score where there is a number above the
electronic part, trigger the next event (either clicking the red circle or pressing a foot-pedal): you will
see the event number switch to the corresponding number in the score and the event sequence will
start.
4. In the end, switch off the audio (the green button will come back to red).

Triggering events through MIDI

To configure the MIDI interface, a MIDI device must be connected to the computer.
Then follow the next steps (see Figure 2):
1. Open the MIDI Mapping settings window (click the button “Open MIDI setup”)
2. Choose a port for MIDI the interface
3. Choose the type of controller (normally a sustain pedal or controller 64)
When the pedal is pressed, a value of 127 is produced. This is the value used to trigger a bang that

Final Remarks
The intensity of the direct sound (the sound volume of the events) and of the reverberation (sound
volume of the reverberation) can be balanced. Please, do not exaggerate the presence of the
reverberation.

During rehearsal, in the case one needs to start from a specific event location, use the controls of the
window “Event Control”, such as the “set number” control, and so on. The number beneath the red
circle – the bang – always indicates the current event location.
To restart all the values, click the “Reset All” button.
