Join other Youth. Help our Community get Healthy, Safe and Fun.
Earn a Stipend. Gain Valuable Experience!
What the basic deal? Do you care about our communities’ health and quality of life? Do you
want to earn a little money? Do you want to have fun while gaining great experience? If yes,
then consider applying for an internship with the Boston-area Food and Fitness collaborative. If
selected, you’ll join several other youth to work on an exciting youth-led project where your
ideas and contributions will be truly valued by your peers and by adults. In return, you’ll earn a
monthly stipend of $100. Internships are 3-6 months in length, with flexible hours of 5-10 hours
per week. Please review the details below. Applications are due July 15, 2008.
What is the Food and Fitness Initiative? The Food & Fitness Initiative is a multi-year effort of
the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to create vibrant communities with equal access to affordable,
healthy food and safe and inviting places for physical activity and play. Boston is one of nine
communities across the country selected to become models of community change. We have to
do something to create environments in our communities that promote healthy eating and
physical activity. We cannot do this without the ideas and help of our young people!
What Project Would I Work On? Youth-led projects this summer and fall will focus on our
planning process. We need your help to find out: What things do youth want to do to help the
Boston area achieve our food and fitness goals over the next eight years? What things do adults
want youth to do? Should youth help build and promote community gardens? Encourage
bicycling and walking? Improve safety are our parks? Increase access to healthy food? How?
Should we use media? Pass laws and policies? Build partnerships? Educate families? Youth
interns will conduct research, educate others and help organize and conduct planning events to
unite their community and set the stage for taking action in our communities!
What are the qualifications and responsibilities? Applicants must be 14-19 years old and
live in the Boston area. On their application, they must demonstrate genuine concern and
passion for improving their community and for the goals of the food and fitness Initiative.
Previous community service or leadership experience will be considered, but is not required.
Applicants must submit an adult nomination form to accompany their application. If selected,
interns must firmly commit to the hours and expectations of their adult supporter and peers.
What are the Benefits? This is an excellent opportunity to make new friends, contribute
something positive to your community, and develop skills and experience that will enhance your
career and education opportunities. Interns will meet and learn from supportive adults
representing government, public health, community organizations and business; interns will
develop confidence and communication skills; and interns will have the opportunity to continue
their involvement in this important project.
How do I Apply? Youth applicants must complete the youth application form by July 15, 2008.
Youth applicants are also required to have an adult ally submit a nomination form on their
behalf, also by July 15, 2008.
