FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Media Justice League Presents (MJL)

Guilty Pleasures Series…Chocolate and Television
Two events to help you consume what you enjoy healthfully

January 19, 2011 - San Antonio, TX - From too much unfiltered “Flavor of Love” and
“Americaʼs Next Top Model” to too much processed candy, mindless consumption is harmful to
our health. Join us for our pre-Valentines “Guilty Pleasures” Series with widely published, and
nationally recognized, media critic Jennifer Pozner on hand to help you unpack gender, race
and class biases in the media, from your favorite reality TV shows to news stories about your
community. Join Jennifer Pozner and the Media Justice League:

• February 9, 6:30PM—9:00PM at C4 Workspace, “Media Literacy, Media Outreach:

Unpacking and Changing Stories About Our Lives.” This hands-on workshop, conducted
in two sections, will help participants learn to identify, deconstruct and challenge gender,
race and class biases in news and entertainment media. A media literacy framework will
introduce you to critical   questions you can bring to every form of media you engage
with, and a media training session will help you learn how to work with journalists to
improve media coverage of the issues and people you care about. (limited to 50
participants)
• February 10, 5:00PM—7:00PM,  at the Twig Bookstore, “Reality Bites Back: The
Troubling Truth About Guilty Pleasure TV.” In this lively multimedia presentation and
interactive Q&A, Pozner will discuss sexism, racism and commercial biases in reality
television, and help you banish the phrase “mindless entertainment” from your
vocabulary. A book signing will follow.

Stephanie Tate, MJLʼs Strategic Communications Intern, will ply  participants with a variety of
delicious chocolates at both events. Just in time for Valentines Day, whether itʼs decadent treats
or sketchy reality TV, these events will help you consume what you enjoy healthfully.
