Introduction to GPRS
What is GPRS?

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) takes the 'next step' in the evolution of the mobile
network by adding internet packet data to the existing GSM framework.

As GPRS is an upgrade to the existing Mobilink GSM network, users get similar coverage to GSM
with more functionality. The introduction of GPRS essentially means that we can now support
IP (Internet Protocol) based services. This means that our network now supports the same
information format as the Internet; in f act you could say that our network has become another
portal to the Internet just like your home or business PC.

This enables services such as colour Internet browsing, e -mail on the move, powerful visual
communications, multimedia messages and location -based services.

Feature Benefit

Reducing lengthy dial up delays, stay connected to the network

Always on connection
to receive and send information in real time

Compared to existing GSM & SMS services depending on the

Low Cost Data amount of data transmi tted - not on connection time or fee
based

Improved Performance Delivering information and services quicker to the handset than
(depending on handset & ever before as GPRS data services can utilize multiple timeslots
network capacity) at the one time.

Mobility Access the information where ever you are when ever you want

MMS – Multi Media Services

MMS, stands for Multimedia Messaging Service, is a new messaging service that allows messages
containing pictures, audio clips, text and in the future, video, to be sent and received between
one customer and another.

With an MMS phone such as the Nokia 6600, you can:

1. Take digital photographs and store photograp hs

2. Send and receive full color pictures
3. Send and receive voice clips
4. Add a text message to your picture
5. Have enhanced polyphonic ring tones

MMS runs over GPRS. You need to subscribe to a GPRS tariff, and have 'Media Messaging’
enabled by your network operator i.e. Mobilink. You will need a phone handset that supports
the MMS service - If you receive an MMS message and don't have a suitable handset or GPRS
service, you'll receive a standard SMS text message, and will be able to view the message at
the web address included with the text message.

Just as the traditional sho rt message service (SMS), multimedia messaging service (MMS)
provides automatic and immediate delivery of personal messages. Unlike the SMS however,
MMS allows mobile phone users to enhance their messages by incorporating sound, images, and
other rich content, transforming it into a personalized visual and audio message.

But MMS technology offers more than just a broadening of message content. With MMS, it is not
only possible to send your multimedia messages from one phone to another, but also from
phone to email, and vice versa. This feature dramatically increases the possibilities of mobile
communication, both for private and corporate use.

The originator of the message can easily create a Multimedia Message, either using a built -in or
accessory camera, or can use images and sounds stored previously in the cell phone (or possibly
downloaded from a site).

Several Multimedia Messages can be stored in the users handset and reviewed or forwarded at a
later date.

How MMS works:

Depending upon the mobile operator, a typical example of how MMS messages are sent and
received between two compatible MMS mobile phones is:

1. Using an MMS compatible phone, take a picture.

2. Use your mobile phone to personalize the message by adding text, voice or sound cli p

3. Send the MMS message

On a compatible cell phone, the MMS message will appear with a new message alert. The
picture message will open on the screen, the text will appear below the image and the sound,
if any, plays automatically.

MMS Support most Applications:

Text

∙ Unlimited text that can be formatted.

∙ Text can be accompanied by images, graphics, sound and in future video.

Graphics

∙ Support for Graphs, tables, charts, diagrams and layouts.

∙ Support for animated GIFs.

Audio

∙ Support for music, speech, ring-tones.

∙ Support for streaming sound.

Images

∙ Sending images and snapshots from an attached or built in digital camera.

∙ Ability to edit images and add text.

Video

∙ The ultimate goal of MMS is the ability to send video (over a full 3G netw ork).
∙ The ability to send a simple 30 -second clip has enticing applications especially in the sports
and media arena.

The MMS standard lists JPEG, GIF, text, AMR voice, and other formats as supported media
types, while unsupported formats are handle d in a controlled way.

MMS - Points to remember:

 Make sure that your phone supports MMS.

 Make sure that you have configured MMS correctly.
 Make sure that you're network operator has enabled MMS on your mobile phone
account. They have to switch the se rvice on, and it may take up to 48 hours for your
SIM card to receive the command to enable the service. Double -check that the service
has definitely been enabled
 MMS messages are more expensive than text messages. Ensure that you have enough
credit or have not exceeded your MMS allowance.
 Ensure that you're using the right Multimedia Message "GPRS Access Point", and that the
data bearer is set to GPRS. MMS uses a different APN to WAP, so if WAP works and MMS
doesn't you could be trying to send MMS via yo ur WAP gateway.

WAP - Wireless Application Protocol

WAP is a data service that allows compatible handsets to browse the WAP Internet. As mobile
phone screens tend to be small and the service is slow, it is normally purely a text service.
GPRS has greatly enhanced the uses of WAP. The increased access speeds has greatly improved
the use of WAP.

The WAP Gateway is a piece of middleware taking information from a web server (Internet),
processing it, and sending it out over the mobile network to a Handset (W AP client).

WAP requires proper configuration on the handset before it is used. If you have a WAP
handset, but have never used WAP, you will need to setup the handset by entering certain
information, in the same way that a new computer needs to be setup in order for it to access
the Internet.

Without WAP, the GPRS provisioned phone can still be used as a modem

■ End users of WAP will benefit from easy, secure access to relevant Internet information and
services such as banking, and entertainment through th eir mobile devices.

■ Intranet information such as corporate databases can also be accessed via WAP technology.

■ WAP's push capability will enable weather and travel information providers to use WAP.
This push mechanism affords a distinct advantage over the WWW and represents
tremendous potential for both information providers and mobile operators.

WAP vs. HTML

It is important to note a difference between WAP and HTML Browser based Handsets.

o Most of the handsets are WAP enabled so they require WAP configura tions to
access the Internet (almost all normal mobile handsets)

o Whereas the high end sets have HTML browser (Internet Explorer type of
browser) and do not require WAP configurations e.g. IMate and PDAs

Mobilink gsm brings the internet dir ectly to your mobile phone. Mobilink is the first Pakistan
operator to launch a commercial Mobile Internet service with Wireless Application Protocol
(WAP). It can be accessed with the Mobilink gsm Internet Phone or other WAP configured
handsets. WAP was developed specifically to give mobiles easy access to the internet and
supports the delivery of internet content and services (e.g. email, information etc) between a
WAP Internet Service Provider and a mobile phone via a WAP gateway.

A WAP phone is all you need to search for the latest news and information from around the
world, you'll be able to play games and check your bank account wherever you are. Mobilink
World Portal enables fast and easy delivery of information to users on the move so that you can
always stay in touch and be informed.

Mobilink World also provides indirect access to hundreds of other internet WAP sites . During
2005, the portal will be further developed to give customers access to the WAP portal whilst
roaming in selected countries.
