Shadow Race Lane

T
he trees may be dead, but their legacy lives on,
frustrating residents and Folly Beach officials
alike. A stretch of small oak and pine trees were
pruned or removed along Shadow Race Lane in September
and October of last year, many of which fell outside of the
public right-of-way on land owned by Henry and Cynthia
Wiles of 314 Shadow Race Lane. Under the direction of
Folly Beach Public Works, Charleston County came to
Folly to maintain their right-of-ways. But their work may
have overstepped their bounds.

“Without notification, they over-trimmed, severely

mowed vegetation right down to the edge of a salt-water

newspapers after the incident. “All I know is that my

Don’t miss this: New York

W
hether you work on the island or somewhere
else in the Lowcountry, coming home to Folly
is immediately being on vacation. But that
doesn’t mean we locals don’t like to see the rest of the
world, too. Following are some thoughts and “don’t-miss”
items from a recent trip to New York by editor Stratton
Lawrence:
New York at Christmas time is a magical place. The
giant tree and ice skating at Rockefeller Center, window
displays at Bloomingdale's and Macy's, chestnuts roasting
on the street; they may seem cliché, but they're a part of
the holidays in America that's unrivaled anywhere else.
That said, they don't have anything like Folly Beach's
Christmas parade and its surfing Santas and "Goat
Floats."
Most of our December trip to NYC was spent with
friends and holiday-themed excursions, but we did
discover a few hot spots that we’ll be referring to all of
our friends. Catch a roundtrip ticket (only about $200
from Charleston to La Guardia or Newark) and don’t
miss this amazing performance and restaurant.

“Look Up,” say the posters, but you don’t have to
be told. This theater/dance/performance-art hybrid
can’t rightfully be put to words. Currently playing in
Brazil and New York City, it’s not to be missed (unless
strobe lights and sinking ceilings give you seizures and

The audience is frequently moved about the standing-

smashing walls full of confetti, and performers who
swing from tethered cables in a gleeful romp through the
sky above the crowd.

on Folly, as well. Just search for “Heard on Folly” on Facebook and join in the fun. And Q: Who is your favorite Ginger?
remember, keep it anonymous! A: Lindsay Lohan, pre-meth and pre-lesbianism.

October 1, 2010: “You smell like cigarettes and shame.” Q: Why?

Q: What is your worst quality?
A: My bad temper.

Q: So it’s true what they say about Gingers and Red Heads having bad tempers?
A: It really is.

Q: How does it make you feel knowing that I hold your destiny in my hands?
A: Well … you really don’t because the apocalypse is scheduled for my birthday.

Q: If you could choose one super power, what would it be and why?
A: Telepathy, because I’m nosy and I think it would help me pick up on sarcasm.
I’m usually not very good at picking up on sarcasm. Also, I would use my telepathic
powers to see if people are judging me because of my flaming locks.

Q: Have you ever been so angry with someone that you wanted to mail him/her a box
of poo?
A: No, eww … I would never touch poo.

Q: If there was a movie written about your life, who would be cast to play you?
A: Liz Anderson; people think we’re the same person as it is.

Q: What is your favorite quote?

A: “Pomp a lei lei mama suck a lolly-pop.” It’s something we used to say to each other
as kids in St. Croix when we arguing. It always makes me giggle when I hear it.
If you would like to meet Juicy, you should come to the Drop In Deli’s Enchantment

The King’s Speech: This

film is not tongue tied!
I
can smell the Oscar nominations a mile away! The King’s Speech is a
phenomenal, warm-hearted film that cannot be missed. Colin Firth (in the
performance of his life) dons the crown of the stammering king-to-be George,
whose speech issues are becoming a growing problem. His stammering makes
him happy to be the wallf lower of the family, but George is soon forced into the
crown by way of his older brother, King Edward VIII's (Guy Pearce) scandalous
renunciation of the crown.
Desperate, George follows the recommendations of his wife, Liz (Helena
Bonham Carter), and turns to Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey
Rush). "Speech therapist" is a term that should be used loosely as Logue has some
very unorthodox methods and is not certified; though he may be certifiable. In
the confines of Logue's office he makes it very clear to George that they should
be equals, stripping away the class boundaries and discussing George's deepest
issues. Logue encourages singing, swearing and most importantly, honesty,
trust and respect. The experimentation with fun and games soon ends. War
with Germany forces King George VI to face his old nemesis; public speaking.
The relationship that Rush and Firth create on screen is pure perfection,
acting at its best. What allows this film to come to life are the exceptional
performances by Carter and Pearce. All complement each other; all are on point
and it's effortless to watch. You truly feel you are stepping back into history.
A story of courage, strength and resilience, this movie left me with a tear
in my eye and will hopefully leave an Oscar in at least Firth and Rush's hands.

American White Ibis

By Lindsey Graham

T
he American White Ibis
(Eudocimus albus) is a
common coastal wading
bird with a distinctively long and
curved pink bill, facial skin, and
legs. In the United States it can be
found along coastal salt marshes,
swamps and mangroves from
Virginia to Texas. Mature adults
are primarily white, but have
black tips on their wings which
can only be seen during flight.
Juveniles are brown with white
under-parts which gradually molt
into adult plumage.
This picture, taken from the
salt marsh along Folly Road,
shows ibises flying in a straight
line formation with their wings
and neck outstretched. The
brown individual in the center of
this image is a juvenile while the
others are mature adults.
Brainy Bird:
In ancient Egypt, the
Ibis were considered sacred.
They were believed to be the
incarnation of Thoth,
god of knowledge.
