Despite the DISGRACEFUL attitude of CGSA ...

... we all owe A LOT to Gordon Witteveen.

He was a FOUNDING FATHER of the Modern Golf Course Superintendents In-

dustry.

He was, without a doubt, a GREAT UNFLINCHING SUPPORTER and FRIEND

and ACTIVIST for all Golf Course Superintendents, across Canada and
around the world.

Gordon himself was a LEGENDARY and an ICONIC GOLF COURSE SUPERIN-

TENDENT.

Furthermore, he was a GIFTED and PROLIFIC WRITER, and a RENOWNED

AUTHOR.

He was also an ACCOMPLISHED TEACHER and LECTURER.

Gordon was also a MENTOR for DOZENS of aspiring Golf Superintendents.

Gordon was a man who was HIGHLY INTELLIGENT, ENERGETIC, INDEFATI-

GABLE, and ROBUST, with BOUNDLESS ENERGY.

He was a HERO in every sense of the word.

We have always been in awe of Gordon and his great accomplishments.

He has left behind a world that is BETTER because of his work.

As a member of The Bo ard of Trade C ountry Club for many years, Gord,
in my op inion, was the finest Superintendent the C lub e ver had. Manag-
ing expect atio ns of more than a 1000 members was not easy, but he did
it with a cert ain panache and aplomb . Let t his memory be his legacy .

― Ron Cawfield.

Gord was a force to be rec koned wit h. I e njoyed our e ncounter s, bo th

the kind where we were mutually celebrating, and tho se when he was
challenging something with me. He was likely the f irst « celebr ity su -

sociatio n of Americ a, and a proud founding member of Canad ian Golf
Superinte ndents Associatio n. GreenMaster was a part icular love. I’ll
miss h im.

― Vince Gillis.

He was a pioneer in our indu stry in Canada, and a friend to all golf
course superintende nts where ver the y might be from. I was always im-
pressed with how he remained a « st udent » of the pro fession, desp ite
his vast kno wledge and exper ience . He always re lated to young turf
manager s, and I th ink that was p artially why. His le gacy in our industry
will last fore ver . He was fr iend too though, and it ’s h is fr iendsh ip and
personality that I'll remember most. His enthusiasm for life, his love of
his family , the twinkle in his eye, t he way he lo ved to lau gh, his phi-
losophic al side , and his ease in making new frie nds, all come to mind as
I reflect o n our t ime together .

― Jim McGa rvey. No rth Vancouve r, B ritish Co lumb ia.

He will be truly missed , and I canno t begin to te ll you the impact he has
had on my life .

― Ron Heesen. Co llingwood, On tario.

He will be well remembered for his shaping of the golf course industry
and t he est ablishment of the word « professional » in the super inte n-

I cannot begin to tell you the impact that Gordon had on me. Taking a
green hor n pro shop employee and sh owing me the ar t of cutt ing gree ns
and maintenance of a go lf cour se. I will alway s remember Gordon and
his storie s.

― Gasper Be rna rdo. Otta wa, Ontario.

I liste ned to Mr Wittevee n give a le cture to myself and other Senec a

College GCT stude nts at Board of Trade in 1989. I was immediately
struck with his professio nalism and p assion for the turf care profession.
He was so good to all of us that day , and it was read ily appare nt that
spending t ime with young people abo ut to enter a world in wh ich he was
so instrument al in forming was as gr atifying an exper ience for h im as it
was for the rest of us. All Superinte ndent s across C anad a owe Mr. Wit -
teveen a world of re spect and gr atit ude for help ing to inst il the se nse
of professio nalism, and indeed highe r learning that has become a hall-
mark of the job we all lo ve so very much. Th ank–you Mr . Wittevee n,
you will be missed.

― Dave MacMillan. Chester, Nova S cotia.

I was a very young Super inte ndent in the late 1980s and it was at I be-
lieve my second CGSA Co nference that I was be stowed with the inaugu -
ral Gordon Witte veen Award for be st superintende nt writ ten article in
GreenMaster magaz ine . I was surpr ised, proud, and quite frankly ner v-
ous to meet a man with such a rich h istory in the turfgrass management
profession. However , in very short t ime frame Gordon put me at ease
with h is quick wit . I saw Gordon at every CGSA confere nce , I atte nded
15+, and he alway s had t ime for me. In the late 1990s, I was in Toronto
on CGSA business and had the chanc e to play the Board of Trade with
Gordon and have d inner to gether in t he clubhouse following our rou nd.
People who took the time TO SEND ELECTRONIC CONDOLENCES to the Thompson Funeral Home

Although Gordon had h is op inions, I never felt he was more than willing
to let a you ng buc k like me express mine as well eve n if th ey were in
conflict with his. Whe n I left my po sit ion as a golf course superinte n-
dent to teach at Red River College , Gordon alway s kept in touch not
only to make sure I had an ample sup ply of books, but to see how I was
faring as a t eacher . Gordon as well all kno w was a n ac complished
writer and teacher in his own r ight and I will ne ver for get the time he
made for me and how h e put me at e ase whe n I was a very you ng super -
inte ndent atte nding CG SA confere nce s early in my career. Gordon will
be greatly and sadly missed by many including all of his fr iends in the
turfgrass management pro fession. G ordon was one of th e early le aders
of CGSA and one o f the first to put the « profe ssional » into turfgrass
management in C anad a.

― R o b O f f i c e r . W i n n i p e g , Ma n i t o b a .

I was saddened to le arn about th e passing of Gordon W itte veen, a

classmate from Ont ario Agr icultur al C ollege 1958. I go t to know Gordo n
well at Gue lph, bec ause we spo ke t he same language ( Frisian ), and
English was st ill d ifficult for both of us. We spe nt time toge ther play-
ing che ss, and talking abou t our expe rience s as immigrants to Canada. I
kept in touch with Gord through all these years, and often met at pro -
fessional meetings where Gord would speak about his favour ite sub ject,
golf course management . Gord was a trusted frie nd and we will all miss
him. He served with me on the OAC 58 executive committee , and he
will be missed there also .

― Tjipke Haagsma. Sarn ia, Onta rio .

Force Of Nature presents THE WHOLE TRUTH FROM AN INDEPENDENT PERSPECTIVE from National Organization Responding Against HUJE
that seek to harm the Green Space Industry (NORAHG). It is a series of Reports destined for the Green Space Industry, the Environmental Terror
Movement, Governments, and the Media, nationwide across Canada, the United States, and overseas. The information presented in Force Of Nature
has been developed for the education and entertainment of the reader by providing a sequence of historical events WITH COMMENTARY. The neu-
trality of these Reports might be disputed. Don’t thank us. It’s a public service. And we are glad to do it.

HUJE are identified on the basis of their statements, activities, affiliations, and whereabouts. Even though each Enviro Maniac Culprit is a mis-
guided adversary, each still deserves our respect. The use of the terms Lunatic, Maniac, Culprit, Terrorist, or Basterd are not accusations of any le-
gal wrong doing. Force Of Nature is simply holding Enviro Lunatic Activists accountable for conspiring to change public policies that TERRORIZE,
HARM, and THREATEN the Green Space Industry.

HUJE is a term used to describe Enviro Maniac Activists that routinely concoct FEAR MONGERING, FRAUDULENT LIES, MISCONCEPTIONS, CO-
ERCION, THREATS, DECEPTIONS, TERROR, and PARANOID CONSPIRACIES that are DESIGNED to SCAM and DECEIVE the public into believing
there is some IMAGINARY DANGER with conventional pest control products. HUJE also SCAM and DECEIVE Government Officials into the NEED-
LESS, SENSELESS, and MALICIOUS CONSPIRACY to PROHIBIT conventional pest control products that are FEDERALLY LEGAL, SCIENTIFICALLY
SAFE, TOTALLY IRREPLACEABLE, and ABSOLUTELY INDISPENSABLE.

HUJE have created LOSS OF REVENUES, BUSINESS FAILURES, BANKRUPTCY, and UNEMPLOYMENT, inflicting DESPAIR and DESTITUTION for
THOUSANDS of hapless victims throughout the Green Space Industry. The DEPRAVED INDIFFERENCE of Lunatic Culprit Terrorist Basterd HUJE
is viewed as a form of TERROR, HARM, and THREAT against the Green Space Industry.

This Report provides NO guarantee regarding accuracy or completeness. In no event shall Force Of Nature be liable for any incidental or consequen-
tial damages, lost profits, or any indirect damages. Force Of Nature is TOTALLY INDEPENDENT of any trade association or business operating
within the Green Space Industry. The events, characters, companies, and organizations, depicted in this Report are not always fictitious. Any simi-
larity to actual persons, living or dead, may not be coincidental. All information, excerpts, and pictures contained in this Report were found some-
where on the Internet, and may be considered in the public domain, serving one of the following purposes ― archive, education, promotion, public-
ity, or press release.

Force Of Nature, and its various incarnations, is the brainchild of William H. Gathercole and his colleagues. Mr. Gathercole is a principal FOUNDER
of the Modern Professional Lawn Care Industry in BOTH Ontario and Quebec. He holds a degree in Horticulture from the UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH,
and another pure and applied science degree from McGILL UNIVERSITY. He has worked in virtually all aspects of the Green Space Industry, includ-
ing GOLF, PROFESSIONAL LAWN CARE, and CHEMICAL INDUSTRY, and has served in environmental compliance, government negotiations, pub-
lic affairs, and workplace safety. Mr. Gathercole has supervised, consulted, programmed, and/or overseen the successful and safe execution of
HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of pest control applications in the urban landscape. He has trained, instructed, and consulted with THOUSANDS of
turf managers and technicians. Mr. Gathercole has also been an agricultural agronomist. For many years, Mr. Gathercole was a contributing col-
umnist for TURF & Recreation Magazine, Canada’s Turf and Grounds Maintenance Authority.

Mr. Gathercole and his colleagues have followed the evolution of LUNATIC ENVIRONMENTAL TERRORISM for over a quarter century. For FIFTEEN
YEARS, the strategies designed and implemented by Mr. Gathercole and his colleagues guaranteed the control of the VERMIN OF ENVIRONMENTAL
TERROR for the entire Modern Green Space Industry across Canada. Their involvement in Environmental Issues reached a fevered pitch in the
1990s, when he orchestrated, with his colleagues, legal action against the Forces of Environmental Evil in the Town of Hudson, Quebec.

Today, Mr. Gathercole is the ONLY TRUE RELIABLE WITNESS of the Hudson Affair. Mr. Gathercole is personally credited for crafting the Golf In-
dustry Exception Status that endures to this day. He is also the creator of the signs that are now used for posting after application. His vast knowl-
edge of our long journey with Environmental Issues is UNDENIABLE ― hopefully ! Mr. Gathercole is now retired, although his name continues to
appear as FOUNDER of Force Of Nature.
